HAHA you bet the board is fun these days!! But i can honestly say that while Oxy is on top right now, the players definitely respect Redlands.  The players are taught from the day they walk on campus, that if they want  the SCIAC crown, the Redlands vs Oxy game is a must win.  When Oxy and Redlands meet, you get the gitters and there is a real nervous vibe.  Even in '04 when we were up two scores late in the game, there was a feeling like anything could happen.  I dont know if I could have handled much more in the '05 game. Its a feeling you dont get when you play any other team in the SCIAC, including Cal Lu.  The Oxy/Redlands games were my favorite in the past 4 years, eventhough we should have won in '03. Redlands will be back, and heres to another exciting game in '06!!!

Go Oxy

It is fun to be an Oxy fan Eye!

Anxious for the season to start and the guessing to end.  However, took a few minutes to look at some season previews.  One thought is how sparse the Oxy one looks compared to Redlands, Trinity, etc etc.  Also interested in how Widolf seemed to be cautious about his WR core and offense.  Playing it cool?

Looking at Redlands preview as well as those of their pre conference opponents I am impressed.  Assuming they run the table with the of course exception of Oxy (just a fan comment there) how could they not get a post season nod?  I have got to make sure I make it out to Calif. for the Oxy/Redlands game.

I think that the opening match between Redlands and Whitworth will be very telling . . . if Redlands fields a stronger team than last year, it'll likely be a good close match . . . if the 'Dogs field the team that rolled over to Cal Lu then it's likely that Trinity will be another roadblock.

If, however, as you suggest, they run the table save for Oxy . . . and if Oxy runs the table, then I'd have to guess that a pool C slot would very likely be in play . . . but those are two very big IFS . . .

We have to hope that Oxy's O line gels and that we get a receiving corp in place that can replace the seniors we lost . . .

And you have to know that Widolff will never toot the horn and will downplay everything . . . and appropriately so . . . I hope that he has the championship rings/watches whatever it was/is locked away so the team starts humble and hungry . . .

Oxy has championship rings?  For what......winning the SCIAC?  What a waste of metal.

He had them put away last year, this year won't be any different.
Go TIGERS!!!

Many schools do this. Check Kid's Bridgewater site, for example.

Ouch thats pretty harsh, bro!! Yeah they are for winning the SCIAC but more for reaching the Elite 8. We got watches this year for winning the SCIAC. IF you glance to left of this and look at my icon, thats what they look like!

And that does not come out of any athletic dept operating budget.  It comes from the president's discretionary account and from trustee donations.  So it's not a waste at all . . . it is recognition provided to deserving athletes at a school that does not live and die with the success of its football program.

as it should be . . . .

Don't get me wrong...conference titles are great.  However, I guess expectations are just different in what some programs consider "ring worthy".

Tooth,

It's quite a stretch to say that Linfield cares only about football.  Despite what it may seem in these boards Linfield is a much more well rounded place than you may think.

You're reading too much into my statement Rock . . . no slam intended at the Linfield community . . . just a pointed response to WC11's "waste" comment.

ouch man, i don't understand why you would say that.  A lot of conferences give championship rings for a conf. championship whether its the PAC-10, Sun Belt, SCIAC, whatever. Point being a conference championship is a conference championship, regardless of the level, who pays for the ring, playoff success, etc.  I don't know about the whole watches thing though....

frank uible

Without outside criticism from busybodies or others, colleges ought to be able to give rings, watches or any other items to anyone whomsoever for any achievement, lack of achievement or other event or non-event whatsoever as they damn well please.

dawgs57

Well, count me in the group that thinks a conference championship ring or watch for D3 Football is kind of lame.  SOme of the guy on my team got them at The U in 2000, but I did not want it.  But those guys had to pay for them out of their own pocket, so they had that going for them, which was nice.  It's just not something I would ever wear and tell people about the NWC or SCIAC or ABCDEFGC title that we won.  If you didn't win a national title, or a Big12/10 etc. championship, I don't see the need.
