Chapman cannot force the SCIAC to accept it as a member.

He is huge for a HS QB, I mean at 235, Wabby probably outweighs everyone on the Oxy defense with the exception of maybe 2 D-lineman.

I'm not sure if any impartial parties listened to the whole broadcast but I heard they announced Wabby's stats during the game and listed him at 6'2 245  :o.  I don't know if anyone can confirm this?

Any idea why the SCIAC wouldn't have made an offer though?

Does this means that Chapman has wanted to join the conference?

I've asked this question about a dozen times but have never gotten an answer that made much sense so I'll ask again.  Why is Chapman IND?  It seems like the play pretty much the entire SCIAC every year in football.  Wouldn't it be advantageous to be in a conference that awards an automatic playoff bid?  I know decisions aren't typically made for one sport alone but it seems like it would be cost effective to be part of a conference if possible.  It's not like they are isolated like Menlo (though even they have joined the NWC in football).

Rockcat, as I have followed Chapman thru the years, I have finally accepted the fact that Chapman's likelihood of getting invited into the SCIAC is pretty slim.

However, their functioning as a Pool B gives some flexibility to the NCAA.  When Chapman earns a Pool B, they are a geographic natural for a first round playoff game with the SCIAC Pool A!

As a Pool B, they can compete for playoff slots with the other Pool B teams.  Current Pool B powers such as the NWC, the Presidents AC, and even the members of the ACFC are either adding full members or affilates or even joining/getting into conferences.  By 2007, the Pres AC (especially previous Pool B teams Washington and Jefferson, Thomas More and Waynesburg) move to Pool A.  Those Northwest Conference powers move to Pool A in 2008.  The Northern Athletics Conference and the St Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will move into Pool A by about 2010.  Since I postulated those migrations of Pool B teams, we have read of speculations of the GSAC and USAC coming together and the speculation of the Capital AC adding football playing members from the mid-Atlantic region.

I can speculate that Chapman might be the strongest football Pool B remaining in 2010.  Chapman has done well in getting Pool B bids in other sports besides football.

dawgs go deep

I am still in Maui and have posted because us old FOGGIES cant be in the sun all day and the business center is on the way to the bar!!!!!

I float in the ocean but no surfing...I would end up food for the bottom feeders.   :D

Say  what you might about you now who but the announcers who did the game, although they somewhat joked about his size, were extremely impressed.  Those two guys do hs football every Friday night in Ventura County.  I usually watch their highlite show if I can stay awake.

ALOHA...off to get another one of those funky Maui drinks.  I will have 9 or 10 for all you Oxy guys!!!!! ;D

coco

DGD,

Stay out of the water where it's posted as dangerous, or you will end up as fish food.

And tilt one up for us NWC guys, too!

Ralph,

Thanks.  That makes more sense than anything else I had heard.  As Pat hinted at, do you know if there was ever significant discussion about Chapman joining the SCIAC?  Just curious.

Pat Coleman

The SCIAC doesn't need and doesn't want Chapman, essentially feeling the school doesn't rise to the same level as the rest of the schools in the league.

If the SCIAC wasn't interested in taking Chapman in from 1999-2002, when Chapman could have gotten the league to an automatic bid during Pomona-Pitzer's hiatus, then why would they take Chapman now?

Chapman tried to get in a few years ago and were turned down.  I call it the Cal Tech factor.  The SCIAC is actually an eight team league.  They don't want to make it nine.

They also want to protect Cal Tech sports as part of the true spirit of D3.

Rockcat, Pat Coleman has the best evidence about Chapman and the football AQ.  They could have even been admitted as an affiiliate for a given period of time (about 1-2 years beyond the time when PP came back to the SCIAC  :-\ ).

That's what I was wondering.  I was unsure if it ever been discussed or if one party had prevented it in the past.  I also wasn't familiar with Pomona taking a hiatus.  Prior to moving to California I had little interest in following the SCIAC at all.
