Cat.......Redlands has been in the playoffs 3 or 4 times without a win.  I know they have a good head coach, but what about the rest of the staff? Could that have been part of the problem or were they just overmatched.  I havnt looked at the scores, but that doesnt always tell the story either.

I'm not the best person to come up with a reason why they haven't won a playoff game.  In the games I saw against Linfield they were overmatched.  Even in the 2003 playoff game where Linfield won by 8 they were way overmatched.  The Cats played very sloppy.  Earlier that year they won 49-10.

I don't know enough about their coaches to know if coaching played a role.  One thing that still doesn't make a ton of sense is why other schools would have better talent considering they are in SoCal and it is fairly easy to get kids accepted.  They've also had the best athletic facilities top to bottom in the conference (maybe Cal Lu is better now?).  And the programs history of "dominance"  :P should help also.  I guess the only thing I wonder is why they haven't recruited better...

I would like to karmalize whoever is keeping dgd at the 199 level for a half dozen posts.     ::)

I can't believe that as many posts as you have made on this board in the past year that you don't know that a person's post count gets updated next to every post they've made.

To  DGD: Just want to reinforce what rockcat said about #200.

Go strong or go Home!! for #200.  Since you are an attorney maybe something akin to a overcoming adversity moment like Paul Newman in "The Verdict."  Not saying you spend too much time with a bottle!  ;D ;D

How many more days to the 1st game?  Can't wait.  By the way, how come our kids out in So. Cal can't get those great work deals like Bomar?  Where are all of our boosters?

D O.C.

While I can play the fool as much as I choose I realize no one has such a sense of humor in a business to tease a poster.

I apparently DO NOT know how it works.
I can see this:

August 02, 2006, 11:12:17 pm » 199
August 02, 2006, 11:38:36 pm » 199
August 02, 2006, 11:41:48 pm » 199
August 03, 2006, 12:42:55 am » 199
August 03, 2006, 02:41:32 am » 199
August 03, 2006, 12:05:27 pm » 199
etc.

I apparently thought wrong that as one posts the count automatically changes; that 200 is a magical dgd goal to gain karma rights; that he was playfully being delayed.
I apologize to the board for ASSUMING.

Gray Fox

Dens,
That is how the old board worked.  This one updates the count and karma where ever the poster has been.

Gotta give it to DGD, going from JV to Second String to (in his next post) Starter in under two months, having never seen a DIII game and before his daughter and future son-in-law (;D) even have their first class . . . or his first practice . . . at the U of Redlands.

He has, however, in my humble estimation served as an excellent catalyst for some fun discussions during these dog (not dawg) days of summer when we are forced to grill meat, drink beer, surf, soak up the sun, drink more beer, wax philosphic, drink margaritas, and try to somehow muddle through life absent any DIII football games whatsoever.

Just a little over a week until the boys report to camp . . .

Regarding Redlands and any new freshman recruit, especially a QB, the odds of starting, or even playing the first year, are very high. I watched several games last year. Their offensive issues were not with the QB but with minimal running success attributed to possible limitation in the OL. On defense, they had significant problems with their DBs. It is very easy to blame or praise a QB but there is much more to the story. Oxy fans like to praise their QB as the sole factor in their success. Without 10 other successful players on the field, even a Joe Montana could not overcome faulty playing by other teammates.

DF1:

It's really the Linfield fans who praise Andy Collins as the "sole factor in [Oxy's] success" . . . not the Oxy fans.

DF1,

Welcome aboard.  It's great you decided to leave the shadows and enter the light.

About what tooth said, I think it depends on how you measure success.  Without Collins Oxy is probably over .500 but they definitely aren't 9-1, 10-2 the last two years.  Even the NWC fans who have little positive to say about the SCIAC will sing Collins' praises.

DawgFan1

Please don't miss my point. Collins' name was used only as an example. It takes the successful playing of the entire offense to allow a QB to play at his peak. The QB, by himself, cannot totally make up for weaknesses in other areas. I am only trying to emphasize the QB, although very important, is only one of twenty-two players on the field (considering both offense and defense). The winning or losing of a game cannot be credited to, or blamed on, only one player.

rockcat

DF1,

I think we basically agree but my point is that an exceptional player can take a .500 team and make them a conference champion, especially if that player is a quarterback.  In the Oxy vs. Linfield game last fall Collins passed for 300 and ran for 100 but was sacked 6 times.  In that case it didn't matter how good he was that day because the rest of his team was overmatched.  My point is that if it weren't for him they probably don't win the conference.

So, can a QB make up for weaknesses in other areas...yes but only to a certain point.  Eventually the whole team needs to be good.  But, the SCIAC is a conference that doesn't have any great teams so one great player can be the difference maker.

Here is the monumental number 200.  First let me say that I hate any holiday that dictates to me that I have to let my wife, mom or dad know I love them by celebrating a day dedicated to them by Hallmark.  So...CRZK... I am going to call you Hallmark from now on. ;)

As to the karmaliztion thing...I could care less if I have it or not, or if you smite me or not.  I am only here to discuss football and have some fun.  I dont insult people or attack them verbally in person or behind some screne name so the karma thing is just for fun.  I seem to lose karma without even posting so ....who cares...smite away.  There are several guys who are not over-sensitive and others who will smite you for any opinion you voice that disagrees with theirs or says that their team isnt number 1.  I will only smite a guy if he is rude and makes personal attacks that obviously are not an attempt at humor.  Ask Rockcat, I have applauded him for some of his jabs that I know were made in jest....some of you guys just need to lighten up.

As to "offers" that Wabby had I talked to him at the Crespi practice and this is what he said, I have no reason to doubt him...Pitt made him an invited walk on  offer with promise of a schollie in the following year. Fresno wanted him to grey shirt the first semester, which means he is there as a part time student and works out but doesnt practice and learns the system, but his eligbility clock doesnt begin to tick.  Then in the spring he practices with the team as a walk on and gets the schollie in the fall and then redshirts....its a six year program.  Nevada wanted him to walk on with a schollie coming in spring.  He was invited to attend their camp but went to Pitt instead and so they offered another kid but they still wanted him to come, they just had to wait for the spring to make the formal offer because they were out of schollies until then.  Louisville,..... they had offered a couple of the top guys in the country who had verbally commited to other schools.  One of them committed to LSU. Louisville then invited Wabby on an official visit and requested his dad come. He was under the impression they were going to offer him that weekend, and he and his dad left LA on a Friday morning.  While on their way, a kid who was offered by Louisville but commited to LSU discovered that LSU had offfered another qb and that  qb committed to LSU.  He then called Louisville and accepted their offer.  As a consequence, Louisville offered  Wabby an invited walk on and told him that all their scholies were used and that they would have a schollie in January for him.  I asked him about what is dad had told me...... that they were calling him again and he said that they were and that one of the kids they had offered did not quailfy and that if he was interested they had a schollie for him.  He debated an decided to stick with Redlands.  He said he checked the internet and they already had offers out to 4 or 5 qb's for 2007 and that one of them might be Petrino's son( head coach).  He said the possibility of playing was intriguing but playing was what he wanted and he felt he would play now or early at Redlands and, they would let him play baseball.  I asked him if he had anyother offers and he said he had several from back east, all 1AA schools but he wanted to stay on the west coast.  He said Willamette (sP) and Southern Oregon recruited him and ...how about this...Occidental!  He said he really like Coach Maynard and he was a big reason why he stayed with Redlands.  I hope that I relayed his words to me accurately.

I asked a coach(friend) what "an invited walk on" is and the definition I got was that anyone can try out of the team.  An invited walk on is a kid who is personally asked by the staff to come to the school and attempt to play.  Usually they are made for one of two reasons, the staff thinks the kid has the potential to play but isnt sure so they dont want to waste a schollie until the kid proves himself or they want the kid, but, they may have found him late in the recruiting process and wont have a schollie open up until Jan or the next fall.  I went through the recruiting process with my son and i can tell you that promises are made that are and are not kept, that until you have an offer signed...anything can happen.

It sounded like he was more interested in playing than being at a big school.

As to whether he can play as a freshman qb ...... of course that remains to be seen....... but you guys are making blanket statement that are not always true.  For instance, the SCIAC is competivie...blah blah blah..so that a frsh qb wont make it.  I ask you this ...then how did the kid from Arizona who is a frsh do so well in the Pac 10, is the SCIAC a tougher league?????   what about Brady Quinn at ND  who either started or took over at ND as a frosh?????  Now I am not saying, and dont put words in my mouth, that Wabby is as good as those two, so dont even go there.   But if its possible at the D1 level, it si certainly possible at the d3 level.  Now you say I have never seen a d3 game, actually I have, I saw a CLU home game about 5 years ago and, I did watch the Shrine game with at least 20-25 kids who committed to big name D1 schools and he played extremly well against them.  I realize there is alot more to it than that but.....my argument is better than just making sterotypical statements like some of you guys did, and remember I watched this kid play the last two years and win two CIF championships.

I only got on this board because my daughter will be going to Redlands in the fall and because I know the recruit.  I wanted to learn something about Redlands football. I thought I was being informative and providing Dawg fans with some good news...WOW was I wrong.

and finally, DF1...welcome aboard....be prepared to get blasted.  Thank God I am no longer the newbie! ;D

Now, was that monumental or a tirade? ;) :D ;D

Hallmark?  Hmmm.  Nice.

Well, at least to me you didn't disappoint.  No use going to the hole and dropping the ball.  And no mispellings either!!

"invited walk-on's" out here I haven't heard.  I have heard of "preferred walk-on's."  Think it is the same thing.  Kid is recruited and again for some reason the school doesn't want to pay money up front.  The benefit I have heard is that the kid won't get cut following the opening practice period.  In other words he's on the team.  Maybe not the travel squad but is on the team.  My opinion is that it can be an ego thing for the kid and his family back home.  They can go back and say honestly "I was recruited by big time U.  Hey they love me, they really love me!  (thanks Sally Fields)

My take on your Wabby thing is that he was/is a good prospect but doesn't make the first or even second cut (for $$).  For example, I have heard one reason Collins ended up at OXY is that Oregon or Oregon State (could be another NW D1) wanted him but tried to tell him we don't need another QB lets make you a DB instead.  No dice was the answer and eventually he found a school that wanted him in the position he wanted to play.  Not slamming Wabby but that is what I read between the lines.

Similar thing with Elliot up at Linfield.  The starter at Utah, gets injured.  Gee I can stay and be Smith's backup (nothing wrong there) or go someplace else and be the frontrunner.

My advice to my kid would be go where you get the education you want and you have the chance to play as much as you are capable of.  Ride the pine for 3-4 years and get on as a SR or the 6 year program you mentioned or go someplace, have a legit chance at starting sooner and make an impact.  Think the answer is obvious-go to college, play a hell of alot of football, get an education, if that means D3 go for it-----Just don't end up an attorney and do nothing but post opinions on a D3 football board!   :D

Good job DGD

Congrats---Dgd. You posted more than I have and reached 200 since i started last year.  ;) (just kidding, keep up your ranting and raving)

If wabby ends up beating out Sarahs for the helm i think the world as we know it will end.
However, I am sure he'll end up being used as sarah's back-up. It would be good for him to learn from someone who has been through the league once.

Btw---You're still the newbie until next year.
