Cant a guy just have a little fun?  I dont understand why anyone would be upset with me supporting Redlands  despite not seeing a game..

Nothing at all wrong with having fun. However, making such a big deal about a freshman QB who has never taken a snap at the college level, implying he will save the day at Redlands by beating out their returning starter, PLUS you have never seen a Redlands' game. Am I missing something or is there a lack of credibility here?

dawgs go deep

I dont believe I ever said anyone would save te day, nor did I predict anything, I did voice an opinion that I thought he would have a chance to play or even start.  Am I not entitled to an opinion?  And what else was ther to talk about on a board that was dead until I started some interest.  Dawg fan thanks for your support.  Here is some + for ya.

El Tigre

Well I go away for one day and there are three new pages.  Nothing like coming home after a long day of work and sitting down with a nice cold Guinness (one for you Eye) to read the friendly banter taking place on the board! ;D

Dawgs:  Congrats on making it to #200.  Your milestone #200 post was one of the most adequately written post you have ever graced us with ... keep it up!

Fox, I think Whittier would gain some respect if they'd change their nickname.
We all need to realize that it isn't just the fact that they are the Poets it's that they are the Purple Poets!  I laugh whenever a Whittier guy tries to argue that fact that they are actually the Warrior Poets! How can anyone hold dignity with this mascot:
::) ??? ::)

anything else you need to know about Oxy...just ask Oxy Oswald, he will be more than happy to expound for you!
You know Dawg we have been trying to convince Oswald to be oxy's SID!  I mean I am pretty sure he knows more about the school than our actual SID and puts up the information way faster!  Anyone want to jump on that bandwagon with me?

Welcome to the football side of D3 college sports.

Lol.. thanks. But I've been posting on Post Patterns since 2002. Just on the CCIW board. :)

And yeah, the purple thing hurts a lot. I'm not going to lie. When wheaton played them last year, I walked into the gym, read the purple colored name of the team on (the wall? the program?) and just totally burst out laughing. On the plus side it's a fairly masculine looking Purple Poet...  ;D

I am now a loyal purple poet fan!!!!!!  But someone has to get the pen out of the guys hand!

And El Tigre, yes Oswald my man is a plethera, a virtual fountain of information about Oxy.  Seriously, he knows his stuff.  Ya see tigre I can do it when I want to but its more fun to only do it when ya have to.

When the season starts I will provide an abundance of information about........my new team the Poets, and I did see them play ......once.

I have to say that Poet's is the second worst name for a team I have seen.   Several, like 20 or so, years ago I was playing basketball in a highly competitive league that played some games at the Compton hs gym.  Now there were only 4 white guys in the gym and I was one of them.  I look up on the wall and I see painted on the wall the Compton hs Tar Baby!  I thought thught it was a racial insult, but apparently there is some history behind it.  One of the guys on my team told me the history but I forgot the whole story so I wont try to reconstruct it.

The mascot looked like the martian in the bugs bunny cartoons, a little balck guy with a helmet and a sword.

I can just imagine what would have happended if I would have walked out of the gym and asked someone if they were a Tar Baby fan.

You guys were talking about removing the Indian from being a mascot for some schools, wow, someone ought to take a llook at the Compton Mascot.
Talk about not being PC( a term I also hate ).

CRZK

Against my very questionable judgement I have to weigh in on the Poet issue.

Warrior Poets--let's see  Homer, Kilmer, Joyce (maybe) just to name a couple.  Not bad company

Back to reality--Instead of a guy with a pen and tricorn how about an old grey headed guy with a toga!

Browneagle64

Oswald--- The Shoes have been at Oxy since 2001 not certainly not for 3 years. The only time we lost them were during my freshmen year (2000) when the warrior poets beat oxy 20-21

Whittier College was founded by Quakers and named for well known Quaker, poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier.

"Warrior" Poets?

I don't think so.

Whittier Trivia:

Former President Richard Nixon played football at Whittier, graduating in 1934.

NFL Hall of Fame coaching legend George Allen coached the Whittier football team from 1951-1956.

Former Charger coach Don Coryell, true initiater of the West Coast offense ("Air Coryell), coached the Whittier football team 1957-1959.

tooth...you are the internet...anything I ever need to know....I can just ask you.  Where in the world do you find this stuff?  Here is some + for your efforts to enlighten the board on my favorite team...that I once saw play! ;D

coco

Diehardfan,

You asked what SCIAC game would be a good one to go to. As an outsider, I'd suggest one in which OxyCollins is playing. That guy is fun to watch. Since Redlands has also been doing well the past few years, the Oxy/Redlands game might be a good choice. It might not have the rivalry of the shoes or drum, but you will probably see some quality football.
My two cents only.

The Game to see in the SCIAC this year has to be Oxy at Redlands. It may not have the history of shoes and drums but it feels bigger than those. just the opinion of a parent.

For those who enjoyed the previous SCIAC trivia, I have one more:

Songwriter/musician/actor Kris Kristofferson played football and rugby at Pomona College (class of '58) where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

And that pretty much exhausts my current trove of non-Oxy but SCIAC related football trivia.

Me thinks it's time for a margarita.

Margarita???? Tooth, I make world famous margs.....but the problem with them is I need to wash them down with a Corona.     ;D

I will be watching the dawgs scrimmage on the 2nd...I will give you a first hand , eyewitness report of my second favorite team, the Poet's being first because I saw them play! :)
