Something to open some discussion on the SCIAC:

1.  Which team has the best offensive player returning?  (easy answer for you Oxy guys).

2.  Which team has the best defensive player returning?

3.  Which team has the best coaching staff?

4.  who wins the SCIAC this year?

5.  Which team got the biggest name recruit?

1. You're right, it is an easy one... Andy Collins

2. I would go with Matt Barbour (MLB) from PP or Anthony Ostland (OLB) from Oxy.  I think this was discussed on the board for awhile during the middle of the summer.  I also think Kyle Stowers (FS) from Oxy would make a good cantidate - a fifth year Senior that missed last season due to injury and is a good instinctive player.

3. I really couldn't tell you.  Normally I would say Occidental, but there's been a lot of changes coming into this season with the staff.  My next vote would go to Whittier but they changes coaches like most people change socks....  ;D

4. Oxy goes 9-0 assuming they don't take CC or L&C lightly - those will be important, albiet easy, games early in the season.

5. Wabby of course  :D

Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Wow ... things seem to be getting a little personal in here!  8)

Everyone should just settle down I know everyone waits a whole year for some SCIAC football, but it is almost here.  I am going to prescribe some NFL games for you few who need a fix of football immediately.  For those of you who can wait about a week ... I will be going to Oxy's scrimmage next Friday August 25th at 7pm and like always it is on Patterson field.  It starts at 7pm so we are going to meet for happy hour before I am thinking at the Yard House!  Anyone willing to join me?

From my understanding, the game is actually AT College of the Canyons this year as it was at Patterson Field last year.

Where the heck is college of the canyons? I've never heard of it? ???

COC is a JC in Valencia....they have turned out some very good teams over the last several years.  They have some pretty good coaches who have helped several kids get inot D1 schools.  I know a couple of the staff and they do a great job.

I didnt think they could play anyone other than JC's.

Pat Coleman

Four-year schools can scrimmage JCs. Happens all the time.

I was looking at the top 25 on the home page.....I just realized that not only did I see several d3 games, (back in the early 70,s)  I was actually a d3 hoopster for a year., with the Thiel Tomcats......wow, I thought they were d2 back then.  I was offered a chance to play for a D1 school the following year.....

I guess you guys cant rag on me for never seeing a d3 game anymore, I was a d3'er!

GO TOMCATS!

5.  Which team got the biggest name recruit?

Just maybe it was Redlands with a Qb...from Lake Oswego, Oregon. Perhaps he can follow in some big footsteps.

Oh Den....you are such a jokester....you might be right...who knows....? ;D  In looking at the recruit list they actually have 4 qb's coming in that will be true freshman and 1 that was jc transfer that will move to WR.  they have 3 or 4 qb's coming back from last year.  My thinking is that they cant be too happy with the returnering qb's if they recruited 4 new guys.  Just my opinion. :)

Here is some + for finally getting me to smile today. ;D

Sorry I had the location of the scrimmage next Friday.  Liger was correct it is going to be at COC!  Eye and Oswald ... any good watering holes near by with good happy hour discounts?

6.  Why cant I get more + karma??????????(for those of you who suffer from a lack of humor, this question is intended as a JOKE)

1. Andy "the real deal" Collins should be the best returning offensive player for the SCIAC.
2. I will have the agree with Oswald on the fact that Anthony Osland could be one of the best defensive players returning after living in the shadow of Mr.  Bryant's shadow the last two years.  Last year he played in 10 games and had 69 tackles with 46 being solo and 23 assists, he averaged 6.9 tackles per game, and was second in the league in sacks with 6 behind CMS's Jason Kamienski. 12 of his tackles were for losses that total 43 yards.  He is a good player all around and a player that you can structure a defense around.
3.  I am not sure about the coaching staff because I only played under oxy, but some might argue Redlands because they have been the dominating force in past years
4.  Oxy has a head start at winning the SCIAC especially with Andy Collins at the helm, but oxy has to keep in mind that they can't take any team lightly and Redland/Cal lu vs. Oxy should be big tests.
5. My votes have to be on Wabby any other takers
6.  He I have been around for a couple months and I have 5 karma points you don't see me complaining.  I just  ... enjoying talking about d3 football with all you guys.  Dawg when you played sports (if you ever did) I would guess you were the kid always looking for positive comments from your coach. Let's talk about something other than karma point!  Its not like you get free beer with ever 5 karma points you get ... lol ;D

tigre....very informative post..thanks...the karma question was just for fun.....if I knew it would have met with such terse response I would have ommitted it. :-[

I think Oxy got a pretty good qb recruit in Saunders .......I saw him on Friday night highlights  many times...he looks like  he has great potential, now there is a term I bet youve never heard before. :D

No I wasnt that kind of player at all, I had to out work everybody else just to survive, and it all paid off eventually with a schollie.

About praise from coaches....I am a big supporter of the Positive Coaching Alliance.......the basis of the program is basically you get more out of kids with positive reinforcement than negative.  Where I grew up the coaching mentality was win at all costs.  This philosophy was taught from the first year of Little League thru college. While I am a firm believer in old school ethics and most beliefs, the insulting screamer type coach with negativity is on the way out.  There is a way and a time to let a player know he is not doing what is expected of him without causing him public embarassment in front of his teammaates.  This is especially true at the youth levels.  Many a young athelet has been discouraged from playing because of some idiot youth coach who thinks he is Vince Lombardi.

My son almost quit youth football twice because he was told he as this or that and would never be good enugh to play in high school.  I kept telling him to not listen to anyone, to play har, have fun and believe in himself...he ended up at USC with a full scholarship.  Positive reinforcement...it works.

Don't worry I could care less about the karma thing ... I just like to take a jab or two when I get the chance.  That is what makes this board so much fun.

I know what you are talking about with coaches.  Oxy had an o-line coach my freshman year that was bi-polar!  The other guys can back my up when saying he was one of the worst coaches we had as far as motivation (or should I say scare tactics).  He knew his stuff, but was the toughest coach I ever had the experience of playing under.  I wonder what kind of coach I will be.  I start as the o-line coach for the freshman football squad of my alma mater HS!  I think I can take a mixture of all the coaches I have had over the last 8 years and teach those kids a thing or two.

Congrats on the position....be positive and teach..... screaming will only alienate you from your players,as will insulting or negative remarks or embarassing comments to players, especially freshman.  Its great that you are giving back to your alma mater.......some + for ya.
