Browneagle 64 - Did you stay to the end of the game?  The Poets came back strong late in the 4th quarter and almost pulled it out.

Did I read correctly that Oxy is opening their season playing a team (Lewis & Clark) that only played 4 games last year?

What happened over at L&C?

In a nutshell L & C cancelled all of its conference games last year (citing fears about the safety of team members, they only had something like 30-35 kids total)  - leaving most of the NWC in the lurch...

From the link that Tooth provided us "The Pioneers will still have small numbers, but the depth of talent and the enthusiasm and commitment of each and every member of the squad should go a long way to make up for that". This is what small time college football should be all about. Glad to see that the Pio's get another shot at a football program.

Btw, Oldg---- I did leave early. Great to hear that they fought back that late in the game. THis is why redlands, cal lu and even oxy get fits when they play them. Eventhough they  lose, they do their best in setting up
a fight.

The L&C players would be more "enthused" if their classmates weren't all anti-athlete militants.  That's an interesting place up there...If I'm a student athlete looking for a strong liberal arts college to play at I'm looking everywhere but L&C.

DGD's Week one prediction:

Whitworth is ranked #29 and UR #51, which means very little.

It's Week 2, and Whitworth is ranked No. 25.

You know . . . the difference between no. 1 and no. 25 is absolutely huge . . . I don't think anyone would argue counter to that . . . so I have to wonder whether the difference between no. 25 and no. 51 might mean more than "very little."

Of course, the 51 ranking is pre-season so we'll find out on the field this Saturday won't we.

Here's the Whitworth press release about the upcoming match-up . . . worth a read:

Interesting outlook on Saturday's game DGD, but it appears based more in hope than analysis.  I understand every year's game is different, but it is helpful to use last year's game as a guide.  The Bulldogs scored 21 points (including a very late garbage time TD).  As you yourself said, this year's Redlands offense has issues that need to be worked out.  They will be going against a defense with 10 returning starters.  Do you think Redlands will be able to score more than 21 this year?  Also, Whitworth's offense should be at least as solid as last year, when they scored 35 against the Bulldogs (would've been more if not for a UR interception in their own endzone to kill a long drive).  Even if the Bulldog defense limits the Pirates to a touchdown less than last year, that won't be enough.

And if it does come down to a battle of kickers, Whitworth's Cameron Collings was a 2004 First Team All-NWC selection and 2005 Preseason All-American before missing last year with a leg injury.  The word is he's fully recovered to pre injury status, when he made field goals of 49 and 53 yards in 2004.

I do think it will be an interesting game, and home field will help some (but not as much as the mid-day heat of 2004), but I see the Pirates winning by 10-14 points again this year.

Agreed there probably isn't much difference in those 30-some slots.

Of course, there's a difference between Week 1 and Week 2. Week 1 is done. :)

Pinecone...thats why they play on Saturday....thanks for the insight.   ;)

tooth....I say there is little difference between 29, now 25 and 51 becasue of the comparison between last years UR team and Oxy...the game was close, very competitive and from what I understand could have gone either way.  Oxy was ranked what, 8 or 9 after the great season they had.  Redlands had a let down against CLU and the preseason was much tougher than Oxy's so it appears that there wasnt that much of a gap between Oxy and UR.

Remember, rankings are subjective and are mere opinions.  They are founded on last years performance and can change drasticallly when the season starts and can be influenced by an incoming player, an injury etc.  For example if Collins got hurt, and I pray he doesnt, what do you think would happen to Oxys ranking?

And thanks Pat for the change in rankings, I didnt look because most of the west coast teams didnt play.  My mistake, your promptness posting the changes is appeciated.

At least my prediction finally spurred some interest in the board with 3 days left before kickoff.

GO DAWGS,    BEAT WHITWORTH.

pinecone, also my assesment of the UR  offense is only based upon the scrimmage that I saw.  I imagine that Redlands is required to exchange that film with others. It is quite possible that they didnt want to much so that the other teams could prepare.

Ill  tell you one thing, they have some speed on O that can be very dangerous if used to the fullest advantage.

Hopefullly it will be a good game, I am going to try to make it.

Prediction...

Whitworth by a catnip...or monkey stomp, whichever you prefer.  Redlands will be walking the plank come Saturday.

Pinecone should enjoy this prediction.  It will probably be the last time this year I pull for the Rats.
