I agree, in JC, the emphasis is getting to D1, and academics are only ...getting qualified for the NCAA.

I came from the JUCO ranks and loved it.  If you have ever seen movies like "North Dallas 40" or "Any Given Sunday," its the same mentality.  Guys go to party and play football...its a stepping stone to a 4 year college.  I loved it because you play with a lot of local guys.   My team was like an all star team of the local community and we were good....therefore it was fun.

The biggest difference between JUCO and D3 is the speed.  More athletes.  But at the D3 level coaches teach the game.  When I was in JUCO our receivers werent taught how to break a route off against a cover two zone, they were told just to out run the corner and the safety.  Here at Redlands....the qb's read everything, and make decisions based on the defense.

I am happy I got to play in both situations!!

In an unprecedented move I just applauded OxyBob.

There must be hope for peace in the Middle East.  :D

JC is all about the me mentality..people arent really there to win and be part of a team..they want to get there stats and be out getting that schollie...A couple of my friends went that route and they said there were fights between players on the field and off the field...there was fights between players and coaches..

To all Accidental fans:

There is a very nice article on Oxy in todays Daily News.

Division III Football: Occidental's offensive line doing just fine
BY IVAN OROZCO, Staff Writer

Occidental College launched its 2006 football season with a nonconference win last weekend, cooling doubts about its inexperienced offensive line.
After graduating four starting linemen, quarterback Andy Collins finds himself standing in the pocket behind one returning starter, Thomas Gonzalez.

But the men up front, led by Gonzalez and center Chris Kyle, gave Collins time to find receivers and did not allow a sack as the Tigers steamrolled Lewis & Clark 49-7 on Saturday at Patterson Field in Eagle Rock.

Collins, who ranked ninth in NCAA Division III passing efficiency last year, completed 16of 19 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns.

The junior quarterback's scoring passes went to Jordan Inabnit (20 yards), Mike Winchell (3yards) and Rocky Ciasulli (3yards).

The Tigers rushed for 159 yards.

Running back Matt Andersen gained 101 yards and scored two touchdowns in the first half as the Tigers took a 35-0 halftime lead. He sat out the second half.

Occidental's defensive line also made its presence felt. Robert Thoefanis recorded two sacks and Scott Ferguson made two tackles  for a loss and batted down two passes at the line of scrimmage.

The Tigers will be home to play Colorado College at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Colorado College is coming off a 34-27 win over Oxy's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Pomona-Pitzer.

Occidental won last year's meeting 34-10 in Colorado Springs.

Cal Lutheran, which rallied to beat Pacific Lutheran 17-14 in Tacoma, Wash., plays its home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday against Willamette in Thousand Oaks.

The Kingsmen have won eight successive games and 15of their past 16.

One of my son's coaches from high school went on to coach at Cabrillo.  I saw him the next year and he told me about an instance when he was trying to tell one of the players what he was doing wrong (i.e., coaching).  The player wasn't really buying what he was being told and finally said to him, "Man, you sound just like my probation officer."  :D  I don't envy the guys who coach at the JC level, though some of them are excellent.

Man that article about the O-line really brings a tear to my eyes.  I know Mr. Kyles and he is going to do good things for the tigers as the center.  Tom is a very good player and will only get better as the season progresses.   Mr. Gerhart is new to the mix, but I know him very well (was my roommate last year) that guy has more intensity than anyone I have ever seen. He wil definitely be a big factor in leading the O-line this season.  I really miss all the guys on the o-line.  GREAT JOB AND KEEP UP THE WORK MEN!

My predictions should come tonight have been to busy this week to even think straight!
O.C. RAH!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Don't knock JUCOS....many athletes go to Junior College instead of going right to a d3 school, eventhough they have the grades to get in.....and many  kids don't have the money to pay for 4 years at a small private college....

I was a great student in high school, and an even better one in college...I went the JUCO route and still received two great degrees from Redlands...and I am now working on my PhD......it does not matter where you start, but where you finish!
