UW-LaCrosse will be tested by Azusa Pacific.  With all the byes would be a good game to catch.  Azusa held their own against UWW on the road especially 1st half.  AP with a great schedule takes on the rats in Spokane next .  Wonder where AP would be ranked if they were a DIII program ?

Wasn't really trying to be harshin' on Collins.  He is the second-best D-III QB I've ever seen.  My point really was that Elliott, to me, is literally and figuratively head and shoulders above Collins.  The fact that he was able "only" to make a practice squad on a team with very young QB's that also traded for a third, despite what Elliott did at Linfield, tells me that someone of even Collins' outstanding ability stands little chance of playing at the next level.  More an observation and conversation starter than anything else.  Just tryin' to "Put topics on the table!!"  ("Kearny Mesa, where are you!!??)

Thanks, Hacksaw!  :D

I don't know about Collins shot as a pro, there are always a number of "can't miss" guys (most of them play/played receiver for the Lions) who bomb as well as guys nobody ever heard of who dominate.  There were a few guys who played at Cal Lu in the 70s who had productive pro careers - I know it's a different era, but I think Collins at least has an outside shot.

As for APU and D3, to me it's a moot point.  I don't know what their specific scholarship numbers are, but just looking at their relative size and speed I think they're handing out at least a fair number of partial rides.  As long as they're doing that it's an apples-oranges thing to me.

Elliott is a much better pocket passer but Collins is far more athletic.  Like all Qb's who try to make the jump from D3 to the NFL they will have to transition into a far faster game.  I think Elliott had a few advantages that Collins hasn't had; two years of D1 experience and playing with WR's with well above average speed for D3.  With the exception of a few I've never been impressed with Oxy's team speed.  I of course am a rah-rah Linfield guy but it would have been interesting to see what Collins would have done if he would have played his career with the weapons Elliott had at Linfield.  I don't think he would have thrown 110 touchdowns in two years but it would have interesting for sure.

I think Collins will have opportunities to play after graduation but probably in one of the arena leagues or in Europe.

Well, first take away those athletes that are on athletic scholarships (NAIA).

Then compare them.

More interesting to compare USD (who blew out APU) - they are D-1AA NON-SCHOLARSHIP.

APU is usually pretty good, but this year, other than USD and the two UW's, they do play a bunch of weaker teams.

Both USD and APU used to be (early-mid 90s) very beatable for the top teams in the SCIAC, nowadays not so much.

I think in both cases the change involved greater commitment of financial resources (at APU scholarship $, at USD coaches and facilities) but others on this board may know more...

Scandihoovian,

Your points are spot on. We played them both when I was at Redlands. We beat USD both times 2/2 and beat APU 3/4. They are both different animals as football programs today. I feel the Redlands teams of old could still beat APU today. Just my opinion.

Over on the SCAC board there has been much talk about the 5'11"  freshman QB that will be starting for DePauw this week against Trinity.

Perhaps the Johnny Cash  type name has made him tough enough to overcome the pressure at such a young age. ::)

OK - This will be the second, and last, time I mention this guy, but short guys (like myself) need  all the publicity we can get. :D

OK, someone's got to say it . . . "No. 18 in your program, but number 1 in your heart,  frosh quarterback Spud Dick!"

"We represent, the lollipop guild, the lollipop guild, the lollipop guild,  we represent, the lollipop guild . . . . and welcome you to munchkin land!"

He's not really that short, but the the "short guys" comment just put a tune in my head . . .  ;D

ah, you can tell it's buh bye week . . .

Alright, in the spirit of bye week Friday (at least for the teams that enjoy the most representation on this board) I thought I'd encourage some discussion by posting a list of my favorite recent games involving SCIAC teams.  I'm keeping it recent in the spirit of including the many folks on this board that were too young to be at the 1977 Playoff game where the Kingsmen came storming back from three scores down in the 4th quarter to beat Linfield (yes Dens, that was for you  :D)

5)  2002: Cal Lu 6, Oxy 0 - BrownEagle likes to refer to this one as the mudbowl, scoreless in regulation, the Kingsmen outlasted the Tigers in overtime in a downpour.

4) 1999: PLU 28, CLU 26 - PLU built a big lead early and the Kingsmen fought their way back, scoring a TD to get within 2 with about 2:30 left, but their hopes for a 2 point conversion were squashed by an excessive celebration penalty (yes boys and girls - please remember not to jump up and down and wave your arms after making a great, potentially game changing catch).  PLU later went for it on 4 and 1 and barely made it, their failure to make it would have set up a 40 yard FG for the Kingsmen.  PLU went on to beat Rowan in the Stagg Bowl for the national championship.

3) 2004: Oxy 42, Concordia Moorhead 40 - I think we're all familiar with this one, it was great to have the SCIAC represented so well on the national stage.  Complete with a great goal line stand by the Oxy D to win the game.

2) 2001: CLU 46, CMS 38 - an amazing back and forth game that went to three overtimes.  Game story available here: http://www.d3football.com/story.php?story=4974

1) 2004: CLU 27, Redlands 24 (sorry RFB  ;))- Another closely fought game.  Redlands had CLU pinned deep late in the 4th quarterwhen the Kingsmen converted a huge third down and then moved the ball about 25 yards in 11 seconds to get into range for the winning field goal at the gun.

Whitworth is an exception to my previous comment - I admit it -
but look at APU's schedule -

Malone has had football since 1993 and has a new coach.
Dixie State is in its first year of "4-year" football after having been a 2 yr college.
Webber International started football in 2003.
Southern Nazerene has had football for 6 years.

A lot of football history, right?

pitkaine

I was at the CLU/Redlands game in 2004. It was one the best college I have ever seen. Both sides played as if it was a playoff game. Big plays, Hard hits and a last second field goal to win for CLU, doesn't get much better than that.

Browneagle64

scandii---I like the list that you put up.

IMHO, How about for an honorable mention:
2001 ...Oxy 27- CMS 24 (4OT). After a 3rd quater mess with the stadium lights turning off during the game, a 45 min. game delay, and the final game winner coming from a field goal at 10:45pm, how crazy would this game turn out to be. It was exciting playing in that game.

The game CLU vs Redlands was a hardfought hard hitting game...having played in that game i will say that redlands running back was a load to bring down...He had size, speed and was as tough as they come..Go Kingsmen!!!
