Going along with the bye week musings, has there ever been any thoughts or discussions about an senior All-Star game between the SCIAC and the NWC? It would have to be after the play-offs and could be held in sunny So. Cal. Sorry to the NWC, but I lived in Portland for two years and I know what the weather is like in December and January. Money would definately be an issue, so sponsors would have to be brought in. I know it's not a barn burning topic, but I thought it might be something to discuss.

I'll say that I'm partial to the CLU 6 over Occidental 0, in double OT.  It was an unbelievably intense game that you'll never be able to understand unless you were there.  What a mess.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

scandii---I like the list that you put up.

IMHO, How about for an honorable mention:
2001 ...Oxy 27- CMS 24 (4OT). After a 3rd quater mess with the stadium lights turning off during the game, a 45 min. game delay, and the final game winner coming from a field goal at 10:45pm, how crazy would this game turn out to be. It was exciting playing in that game.

I remember hearing about that one, BrownEagle.  With a final score of 27-24 in 4 OT's there must have been a whole lot of defense being played, am I right?

I like that all time game list.  Only one I saw was the Oxy-Cobber game in the Fargo dome.

What a game!  Two great QB's, hits all over the field, and the goal line stand for Oxy has to be a classic.  In fact that picture and the stand made the local paper.

Since people starting musing I will add this about next level of play.

I have done some checking into the explosion of arena football.  If not mistaken it has a couple of different levels now, kids make pretty good $ for playing (if you don't live in SOCAL of course) and get some chance to move up the food chain.  I used to live in Des Moines Iowa and saw my first Arena games there.  Man what an experience, noise, excitement etc.

Of course the Barnstormer at that time had a QB named Kurt Warner!  Boy if I had only gotten his autograph!

Anyway,  does anyone know the recent success of D3 kids in the CFL or Arena football?  It seems that that step would offer the best chance to move on then jumping right to the NFL (even if it is the practice squad).

That's true about the Concordia fans.  Also a note I was impressed with their fans and how gracious and friendly they were.  It is always easy to be gracious when your team wins.  A good display of sportsmanship!

About the Fargo dome, I was told that since home field advantage in the playoffs is not necessarily a given, the Cobbers asked for use of the Dome in an effort to ensure that they played at home.  I guess the moral of the story is "be careful what you ask for!"

All I can say is sitting in the Dome beat the heck out of watching a 20 degree game outside!!

You are right about the defense scandii..... Both Oxy and CMS exposed each others offense and thus depending mostly on Defense. Thats how the game was won during that odd yet fun night.

btw,The 6-0 mudbowl was fun to play in because 1) there was cold brown mud 2) there was a downpour that made every playing condition crazy 3) both teams had to depend on their respective running game and run defense and 4) we all couldn't believe that fans on both sides actually stayed to watch the game.

What's all this complaining about weather conditions? It makes for classics, as everyone has pointed out.  the vast majority of my best football memories have come from mudbowls, snowbowls, sleet, rain, hail, below zero windchill, etc.
the SCIAC should start playing the WIAC or MIAC in mid November? Tenth game anyone? It would be good prep should we send a team to the Stagg Bowl at some point.

It's cause Native Californian's are wusses when it comes to rain and snow... hence everyone slowing down to an absolute crawl when it starts to drizzle. Or wearing parkas when it's 50-60 outside. On the east coast where I (and maybe you?) are from it can be raining buckets and everyone's still driving over the speedlimit.

I was actually just talking about this over on my original home board... There is nothing like watching a football game where the guys are covered in mud, the precip has been pouring down non-stop, and you haven't been able to feet your feet or hands for over an hour, but you can't bear to go warm them up by the heater cause the game is so intense!

You guys don't know what you're missing.  :)

Eye of da TIGER

Yes its true, most of the guys on the Oxy team are from Ca, or other warm states.  The Linfield fans got a real kick out of us having two heaters on the sidelines that sounded like rockets in '04.  But what can we say, we go to school in Southern California! We are the same guys that when we got off the plane in Fargo in '04 to play Concordia, we had a team snowball fight with about 1/16 inch of snow on the ground.
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Go Oxy

DiehardFan -

I would disagree when you say Native Californians - more like Native Southern Californians -

Northern Californians play in rain, mud, sleet, sometimes even snow and love it!

The first college game I played in was against College of the Siskiyous in Weed (Mt Shasta) - It was sunny the day before when we travelled so we didn't bring rain gear - overnight a storm hit with heavy rain and sleet - we played on a field with at least two inches of standing water in places and sleet and freezing rain throughout the game - and we were in our lightweight mesh jersies!  Other than losing the mudfest 7-6, it was one of the most fun games I had been in!

Uhh, I just spent 15 years where you are from and that is definitely NOT true. I can count on my commute being twice as long when it rains.

Pat: Fine, but the DC area is still nothing like So Cal interms of precipitation panic.

rbaikie: good point, sorry... Northern Cali breeds a whole different sort of animal... on all sorts of levels. :)

I don't know that anybody's complaining about weather, in fact I think Oswald, BrownEagle and I all feel the Cal Lu Oxy mudbowl was a classic because of the weather.

I think weather gets discussed here quite a bit because when you're from SoCal you are less used to playing in a variety of conditions and therefore the conditions can present a greater challenge.  I don't think it has anything to do with being unwilling to play in wet/cold conditions.

OK, I get it . . . but I'll tell you, there is an advantage to being a So Cal native.  You can always tell the natives from the transplants and visitors in an earthquake.  Locals remain calm and start guessing the strength of the quake, while non-natives scurry like cockroaches when the light goes on, panic and soil themselves.   ;D
