I would be willing to bet that if had testing at the DIII level, the only thing you would find is alcohol and marijuana. If you are taking performance ehancing drugs at this level, then mom and dad must footing the bill. Most kids are on financial aid and can't afford to buy that stuff on a normal student budget. I'm not naive enough to think that it doesn't happen, but IMO most know that they're not going to the next level. ie NFL, CFL, Arena.

When Whitman was in our conference they were the Missionaries. How intimidating are missionaries? They dropped football, BTW.

Missionaries were pretty intimidating to American Indians, uh. . . Native Americans. Oh never mind, the NCAA has nixed all that anyway!

I think I've finally figured things out . . . you've become independent wealthy and spend your days trolling the net for obscure, yet relevant, comments to post . . .  :D ;D

God, I wish I didn't have to work for a living . . .

dawg gone it

After learning about pool c bids for the playoffs....it appears that the dawgs entire season will boil down to winning the SCIAC title.  It appears that if they lose the Oxy game...well it's time to get ready for next year.  It seems a bit unfair in that the first two games were against two ranked teams.  Maybe there is something to be said by playing an Oxy like preseason. It is highly unlikely that if the dawgs lose to Oxy, run the table and finish second, they will make it to the playoffs.

It also means that the Chapman game is really meaningless other than playing for pride.  I would use this game to continue to prepare for Oxy, that really is the big picture for the dawgs, isnt it?

Not to much pressure on the Oxy game is there?

I'm glad to hear UND is sueing the NCAA. It would be nice if the other schools could join and make it class action. I talked with some folks from McMurry, when they were out to play Manlo, and they commented that they can't afford to sue. They said they are going to send a bill to the NCAA for the cost of changing all the logos though.

I believe the fighting irish to be a racist and derogatory nickname. same for the ol miss running rebels. any school with a pirate mascot misrepresents these seafairing folk as violent and only after booty. The george washington colonials is an insult to those who endured slavery, and the same goes for any team with the name colonials or presidents. This is horrible. mascots should be completely eliminiated. Schools should be recognized by name only. If ragin' cajuns' isnt an affront to anyone with an ounce of american blood. I do not know what is.

that being said, does anyone know the history of the Cleveland Indians?

EastCoastStag

"Cleveland took on the name "Indians" in 1915, reviving a nickname of its old NL club upon the arrival of this Native American in 1897. Hall of Famer John Montgomery Ward referred to Sockalexis as "a marvel". "
Courtesy of 1) the Cleveland Indians and 2) my knowledge of history.

Could we be a little too sensitive here? Yes. Whether intended or not, these names demonstrate the history of this country and the regions from which the schools hail. These names keep the memory of the tribes and cultures alive. In an era when we are all watching each word we say for fear of being politically correct and our children know more about the history of china then they do of their own country, shouldn't we tout these names as preserving the memory of a culture? If it is ok for the USC mascot to slam his sword into midfield? Why can't the same be done at Florida State w/ a flaming spear? Were the Romans any more violent than some native american cultures? At what point will we get over our white/western guilt? Never seems like it.
I almost dare some school to adopt the nickname "Blank State University Jihadists"

EastCoastStag

No one can give an absolutely positive answer as to whether the team was named to honor or insult Sockalexis.

As for the characture. Can't we say that the Fighting Irish logo is a racist characture? As for other socalled mascots, a new one to be elimintated from the record books- College of the Holy Cross Crusaders.
These bastards slaughtered ruthlessly for the sake of religion.
OH and one more DIII- Wabash College Little Giants. As a person with diminutive height in my family tree, this is an affront to my heritage and a slap in the face to all persons that are vertically challanged.

EastCoastStag

I think if we are going to be accurate in mascot naming, let us call all teams by their proper name. So all schools with a Bulldog or canine mascot should refer to their female teams not as the "Lady Bulldogs",  but as the B*tches.
Note: Not intended as an insult to Redlands. To be used in the purpose of the mascot debate only.

Oh Bob, I bow to your superior intellect. You must really love feeling above others. Even throwing in the latin. Cute. Must be a lawyer.

I don't give a rat's ass about what someone chooses as a mascot. I have heritage that is a true melting pot of cultures. I fail to see the purpose of banning a mascot based on ancestral or racial identity. I think the slippery slope is a terrible argument to make. However, why does the NCAA cave to a small minority of people who are offended? It is a guarantee that the native american populations are most likely split on this issue themselves. I am sure you can find many who support the use of the mascots. Let the school pick, put it to a vote, to the alums, students, faculty, fans.  If the fans and students are insulted, fine change the mascot. If not, let them keep their traditions. Simple as that. Because the vast majority of people don't care and would probably prefer to keep their tradition.

Arguing from absurdity is entertaining to say the least. However, there is truth to the matter? At what point does anything become acceptable? Does Oxy ban the "that's allright, that's ok, you're going to work for us someday" chant? That being said, I abstain from the absurdity arguements. Does a private institution have the right to choose their own mascot? They have the ability to choose their courses, students, athletes, professors, etc. I would assume they should have the ability to choose their own mascot. No one is forcing the students to go there or cheer for said mascot. No one is forcing native americans to attend the games or see the mascot. If it offends a student, then out of principle he or she should not attend. As for public education, put it to a vote and let those who fund the school ie taxpayers, choose if it is truly that offensive.  Is it possible that the mascots were chosen with racist desires as the key? Oh heck I am sure it is. However, why can't a school stand up and say we want to keep this mascot to honor the culture and people of x tribe? Change a characture if you want, but rather than waste time, money, and discolour others memories and pride, put it to good use. That will go alot farther to engender good relations and will than caving to the whims and whining of the few. IF nothing else, put in a whole page about the wonderful and colorful history of the x tribe in each program handed out at the gate. There is usually a nice middle of the road path of compromise acceptable to both sides.

I believe you meant to say try to concentrate?? I won't respond to the reasoning comments, because as someone once said on this board, (paraphrase) "if a person has to talk up their own education and school, it is likely they feel inferior at times."
