reality check

Funny that this topic came up...

I just got a letter in the mail from Don Hansen.  It appears I was selected to his "All-Southwest-Region-Follows-Division-III-Football-Religiously-Team".

It's just good to see so many SID's using their hearts and heads when they choose to post their school's rannkings in press releases according to AFCA polls or D3football.com and not Mr. Hansen's.

Is Don Hansen ailing and others are running the site?

Tom Brady

That is great.  WHy didn't I get nominated for one of the 300 spots on the All-American team.  What a bunch of poo.  I guess its kind of like giving out a ribon for the 10th place fat kid during Field Day during 4th grade.  "Congratulations, you finished 19 spots behind the First Team All American, but you are still an Honorable Mention All-American"

You are like my shadow...stop stalking me XXXXX from XXXX.

Geez, man, you can't help yourself, can you?

You really should be banned from the site for this. But I don't want to deal with the whining e-mails you sent me when you deleted yourself from the board during the football season.

I'm really getting tired of this.

Where are all my fellow Leos? What are the thoughts about Don stepping down. Who's gonna take over  ???

Pat Coleman

There aren't a whole lot of La Verne fans on the board -- I hope you can bring some more, actually!

Man, a guy takes 3 months off and now a lovers spat develops between Pat and DGI. Kiss and make up fellas. Yeah those rankings are a joke. Son comment was uncalled for. But alot of post season awards are just BS. Even all-conference teams are somewhat political. I'm sure the kid is happy about making it, but its not like the USC Song Girls are trying to have an orgy with him for it. Let him enjoy it and let it be. We'll forget his name in a matter of weeks anyways.

With the f***up of Troy Smith in the Championship game, I predict that Andy Collins will move to the #2 QB behind Brady (OVERRATED AND CHOKES UNDER PRESSURE JUST LIKE PAYTON MANNING (thus far and tomorrow's game aside) AND CAN'T BEAT A GOOD TEAM IF HIS LIFE (or ugly as sin sister's) DEPENDED ON IT) Quinn.

Well in more exciting news, CalTech actually won a game in basketball. I am honestly considering becoming a Beaver Booster.

Maybe CMS has started an off-season program? Maybe players will show up? Maybe it lasts until March? Not holding out hope.

Going out on a limb- no team next year in the SCIAC will win more than 7 games total. It will be a free-for-all. Of anyone, Oxy has the best chance to win more than 7, but for some reason I doubt it will happen. Whittier will be the wild card as CMS learns its 5th offense in 4 years.

Fight ULV: How about alum Anthony Rice Colony H.S.  Rice took Colony to CIF championship in his second season in only the fifth year of the schools existence.

Tiger Football Tackles the Books

Los Angeles (January 18, 2007)

The Occidental football program, which won its third consecutive SCIAC championship last fall, did pretty well in the classroom too.

Six seniors received Academic All-SCIAC honors, along with four juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen.   A minimum 3.0 grade point average was required for selection.

Of the 15 student-athletes selected for academic honors, six earned All-SCIAC recognition in 2006.   Linebacker Joe Zackary '07, the 2006 recipient of the John Zinda Award for athletic performance, sportsmanship, and academics, wide receiver Rocky Ciasulli '07, offensive lineman Chris Kyles '08, and defensive tackle Robert Theofanis '07 are both Academic All-SCIAC and First Team All-SCIAC selections.

Placekicker Thomas Joraanstad '07 and Mike Winchell '07 are Academic All-SCIAC and Second Team All-SCIAC selections.   Starters Tom Gonzales '09, Brett Henderson '09 James Sabo '08, and Patrick Sarkissian '10 also received Academic All-SCIAC honors along with reserves Joey Coverson '08, Mike Covino '08, Jeff Whitlock '10, and Tom Woodruff '07.

Nine student-athletes who earned Academic All-SCIAC recognition in 2005 returned to this year's team and all nine earned the honor again in 2006.   Six Tigers cracked the Academic All-SCIAC squad for the first time.

"Working hard to maintain our success was our goal on both the playing field and in the classroom this past fall," offered 25-year veteran head coach Dale Widolff.  "I'm proud of what these young men have accomplished.  The qualities necessary to be successful in football at Occidental are the same as those in the classrooms and labs."

Occidental put together a perfect 9-0 campaign for the second straight season and made its third consecutive playoff appearance in 2006.  The Tigers will enter 2007 with a school-record 26-game regular-season winning streak.

I don't know who's taking over for Don but hopefully he can have more than one Grad Assistant spot created.  For the schools that have GA spots I'm sure they have more than just one for the football team.  I think it was definetely time for Don to leave.  The program was stagnant and lets be honest except for the 5-4 '05 season he hasn't had a winner for something like 7 years.  The best team he had, 9-0 in 95, was off the heels of Rex Huigens and his recruiting classes.  I know Don was a successful coordinator before and I'm not taking that away from him but from what I hear those mid 90's teams were mostly because of Huigens.  I hope they continue the trend of hiring Alums though.  There are plenty of Leos out there who could do a good job.  Grossman is due for a three pick game.  Colts by 10.
Hail to the Orange!!!

You guys think Coco Jarin is me, don't you?
Nope, he's not. That's my other brother Coco.

I guess I can't question the Passion of the Don in regards to football and  his players off the field... what I question is his treatment of players on the practice field.  I can come up with plenty examples of things no coach should ever do that he did and I only played for him for two years.  I'm sure those with even longer tenures in the program would be able to come up with an exponential amount of examples.  You Leps out there no what I mean.  I have a question for the guys that were in the Hanawalt center at halftime vs. Redlands in '04, did that really pump you up?  I did respect that his reason for quitting was he felt he could live life without the game.  Was that just a sudden profound realization or was he on the fence for a while?  I guess I sound like a hater but I would have to say that Don is a really good guy.

I do have to admit that face he (Manning) makes while he's loosing is priceless.  But can you really believe that when the Colts load up on the run Grossman's still going to make the plays?  I don't.  Just a little tidbit- Grossman had the highest QB rating in a game this year as well as the lowest.
Hail to the Orange!!!
