Collins Competes in Texas vs. Nation Game

Los Angeles (February 6, 2007)

The State of Texas nearly cashed in its bid for national bragging rights Friday, Feb. 2, falling 24-20 in the inaugural Texas vs. The Nation All-Star game, played before a raucous crowd of over 21,000 at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

Occidental quarterback Andy Collins '07 held his own against a Nation defense loaded with Division I talent, completing three of seven passes for 55 yards in just over one quarter of play.  He also threw an interception returned 60 yards for a touchdown.  After the interception,  Collins engineered a ten-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Baylor's Paul Mosley that tied the score at 17-17.

The Texas vs. The Nation game featured outstanding collegiate players with high school or collegiate ties to the state of Texas against top players from the rest of the country.  Collins, a native of Zillah, Washington, was one of four quarterbacks on the Texas squad.

Texas drew first blood with a 29-yard field goal from UTEP's Reagan Schneider midway through the first quarter.   Tennessee's James Wilhoit knotted the score at 3-3 with a 47-yard field goal early in the second.   Texas answered with a ten-play, 70-yard drive and Mosley scored his first touchdown of the game from a yard out with 8:44 remaining in the first half.

Texas fumbled at its own 28 yard line moments later, setting up a touchdown pass from Maryland's Sam Hollenbach to Ryan Moore (University of Miami) on the next play.  The Nation took a 17-10  lead on the interception return by Taurean Charles of Bethune-Cookman.

Collins ranked 12th in NCAA Division III total offense (273.1), 14th in passing efficiency (153.7) in 2006, earning SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors for the third consecutive season.   He tossed a 54-yard touchdown pass and caught another Dec. 16 in the Aztec Bowl, becoming the first quarterback named Aztec Bowl Most Valuable Player.

Stay tuned for more on Collins' football future and the three-time defending SCIAC champion Occidental Tigers in the coming weeks.   For video highlights and more information about the game, log on to the Texas vs. The Nation website.

As always, thanks Bob.

Yes, it did suck for a 7-1 team to not be invited to the biggest dance our lives, but it good to see that now any SCIAC team can be invited more quickly than in the past years.

Hmmmm, if we are going to compare campus scenery I would have to laugh at anyone who puts down "Cal Who"  I myself am partial to a campus that is covered with beautiful grass and trees everywhere.  Brand new dorms and academic buildings.  A very nice new Athletics building (which screws football big time but thats a whole other post).  Plenty of blonde girls, 20 minutes from the ocean and last and most importantly, after 11 am there is no brown ring of air surrounding the hill with "CLU" on it..... ;D

WT-

I agree whole heartedly with much of your post, with the exception of the new facility "screwing football".

The new building has great strength and fitness, as well as sports medicine and training facilities.  All of which are used extensively by football players.  Football basically took over what used to be all of the old athletic offices, men's locker facilities, and training areas - so they now have all of their operations under one roof.  Did they get as big an upgrade as say baseball or basketball? No.  Did they still get a pretty substantial improvement in their situation?  Absolutely.

OK Scandi, I retract my previous statement. ;)  Any change for the football team was needed and now they really have a place to call their own.  I am not around campus at all but I am sure the new weight room is pretty nice for all the teams involved.  I guess it would just be nice for all of the teams to get something new but we all know that takes $$$$$$$$ and a football facility would be the most expensive.  Both the hoops and baseball teams have had to wait a very long time to get into a nice facility and the football team might just have to wait a little bit longer.  It will happen, I just dont know when........

Just checked out CC 2007 football schedule. No Oxy this year. I wonder who the Tigers are picking up as a replacement?

Tough news on the front page. Condolences to the Wagner family in their loss. From what I read he was a good young man with a bright future ahead of him. I'm sure that CMS football will gather ranks and celebrate this young man's life.

So sad - every parent's worst nightmare come true.

My condolences to the Wagner and CMS families.

Very true - WT - It will be interesting to see how the fund raising goes for the new football stadium - and whether or not it includes new locker facilities & offices.  It will be especially interesting to watch and see if the new coaching staff serves to expedite or slow the process.
