Well, MacMurray College of Jacksonville, IL just picked up former Oxy Alum and Defensive standout Kyle Sweeney to be their head coach. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that maybe coach sweeney would like to schedule a good ranked team like the Oxy football team for this next season.

Nice mentions of Whitworth's Michael Allan and Oxy's Andy Collins in today's Los Angeles Times sports section by sportswriter (and Oxy alum) Sam Farmer:  "Let the Next Season Begin" discussing the next NFL draft.  Under the heading "Five Small School Stars" Sam writes about D3 players as follows:

•  Michael Allan, tight end, Whitworth (Wash.): He made some nice catches at the East-West Shrine game that helped boost his stock. At 6-7, he's more of a big-target receiver than a run blocker.

and

•  Andy Collins, quarterback, Occidental: The Oregon transfer was the MVP of the 2006 Aztec Bowl — which pits all-star teams from the U.S. and Mexico — and played well in a Texas-vs.-the-nation game. He's accurate and smart, and that could land him a job.

It's not all bad Bob. If the Tigers play at Menlo I get to go see them. ;D I'm sure it's a home and home 2 year contract. Where do they play in 2007?

Gray Fox

Is Menlo a budget thing, a California thing (bus trip), or the short notice caused by CC going to the SCAC?

By the way, CC will still be playing Pomona this year.

I know, I know, we (Oxy posters) all would have wanted a Linfield or whitworth being schedule for an regular season game. However, i still think Menlo is a decent team. Although, they are still striving to reach back to the dominating stage like they used to when they had Nate jackson and the Kid who broke a 4,000 plus passing yard, Menlo should be a good pick up. Again, i wish it were a strong NWC team, but i am not in charge of making these shedules.
Or could it be that Oxy wanted to finally win a game up in Redwood city????/ ???

I've always wondered why Oxy had their schedule set so that both out of state games (at L&C and at CC) were in the same year.  Maybe this will eliminate that in the long run.

In a previous post you wondered who Oxy would be playing instead of Colorado College. Sabretooth Tiger speculated that it might be Menlo. Sadly, it is Menlo, not Linfield or Whitworth or even Pacific Lutheran. And we SCIACers can't understand why the NWCers scoff at us, or why the Redlands fans mock Oxy's schedule.

OxyBob

Menlo is a big improvement over CC and L&C.

What is the latest on the Cal Lu job?  Who is in the mix?

Heard the Canyon High HC has a shot at taking the CLU job.

He must be in his 60s, yes?  At least he looked that old when I watched the DLS game.  But then there's an old guy in MN named Gagliardi who seems to be doing okay and he's 80!  ;)  Indeed, "Gags" will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Positive Coaching Alliance at Stanford on Feb. 24.  Phil Jackson will be presenting it.  http://www.positivecoach.org/ArDisplay.aspx?ID=461&SecID=235

Well, if Harry Welch, the coach from Canyon High, gets the job at CLU the Kingsmen will certainly benfit from one of Welch's specialties --  getting his team lots of extra practice time. Just ask the CIF.

OxyBob
The AD won't have much time to expand the football facilities.  Keeping an eye on Harry is a full time job.

He has the unique distinction of being fired by the CIF.   Later,  they were forced to reverse their decision because it was determined that only his direct employer could do that.

In the few games I saw his teams play, I never was impressed with his strategy or X's and O's, but his players played very hard and with intensity.  And I was not impressed with their sportsmanship or the relationships I saw among the players on the field.  His teams have always won, but personally, I don't think he fits in with the D3 profile. >:(

What about Dean Herrington, former head coach at College of the Canyons (now Alemany HS)?  He was the Oxy OC in 2001.  He has developed many good passers over the years.

Will Cal Lu promote from within or step outside the family?  I've only heard names of high school and D3 guys.  Has anyone heard about any guys from other levels?

Tom Brady

Good job by Cal Lu getting on top of the new coach search.  DO they plan on waiting until the summer or what ???  I guess they don't really feel like it is all that important to get the new coach in there and letting him get familiar with the players.  Enjoy your return to the bottom of the SCIAC with Whittier....and thats coming from a Cal Lu fan!
