PC.......Understood and agreed, however, I think he could have and worded his exit statement without insulting CLU and maybe the entire SCIAC.  Just my opinion.

Perhaps he thinks playing 10 games instead of the SCIAC-limited 9 games is what college football is all about.
Perhaps he thinks playing in front of 4.400 fans per home game instead of 1,510 is what it's all about.

Those of you who haven't been out of the SCIAC should recognize there's a big D-III out there. Those were just two differences right off the top of my head.

Even so, his move is purely selfish. He basically pissed on his three years at CLU.

Jones obviously left Cal Lutheran because he was unable to cope with the disappointment of not getting even one opportunity in his football career to play against Haskell Indian Nations University.

OxyBob

Possibly, at least I get to know how Oxy fans feel about their yearly non-conference schedule.

Pat Coleman

Assuming that is what he actually said. Perhaps he said "big-time" or "high-level" or "championship" and that wasn't recorded in the newspaper. When you get to the end of a long quote sometimes it's hard to keep up.

I can certainly understand his disappointment in seing UR get to play with the Indians and not CLU, I can relate to wanting to play for a National Championship, play in front of big crowds...and for all the other logical reasons that PC might post, my question is....why throw out the insult as you pack your bags?

The article says he was on the panel to hire the new coach and approved McEnroe, then he transfers shortly there after....... is the use of the phrase...lame duck.... appropriate?

PC, I dont think we can assume anything other than that is what he said.

Not that it matters but I think he walked out on his teammates.

Article in today's Ventura County Star about Danny Jones' departure from Cal Lutheran:

CLU QB Jones Won't Be Back

"I was looking out for myself basically and my career and I thought it would be a great opportunity to be able to compete at a national level," Jones said. "Obviously, it was an extremely hard decision for me because I have a lot of friends at CLU. But this came down to me really wanting to experience what college football is all about."

OxyBob

I think you are reading into it a "slap in the face to CLU."  My interpretation was that when he said he wanted to, "experience what college football is all about," he was referring back to the first line.  "I thought it would be a great opportunity to be able to compete at the national level."   My guess is that this move was more about what UWW has to offer him because of their recent success the last two seasons, (Stagg Bowl, two players in NFL camps,)  and less about his situation at CLU.   He also cops to looking out for himself.  Say what you will, as someone stated weeks ago on PP, it takes some big kahones to roll the dice like this and make such a huge change this late in his career. I admire that.  He will have to earn that starting spot.  The senior who has been waiting his turn and the sophmore "Wisconsin HS player of the year," will not roll over.  Should be a hell of a camp. I wish them all the best and my best to CLU and their QB's who have just had a huge opportunity open up for them because of Jones's departure.

Having been in a lot of interview situations where I have a recorder and others have a notebook, I know that what is said and what is printed often do not have a 1-to-1 relationship.

Lot of people walked out on CLU this offseason, no? Why is a player bound to a team more than a coach is?

My personal view is that CLU  has been building toward winning a SCIAC Championship and that DJ  was an integral to the equation.  Of course a player or coach is free to go where ever, when ever they want, but under the circumstances, especially for the 3 year starting qb, I just think  loyalty might have won out in his decision making process.

I'm not faulting him for leaving, Im just not sure from a personal standpoint I think it was the proper thing to do.

I wasn't reading anything into it. I just posted a link to the article and a quote from Jones, without comment. The Redlands guys are the ones who are all up in arms. In any event, I don't think what Jones said was insulting at all to CLU. He said he was transferring to advance his own career and play at a higher level. Nothing wrong with that. Frankly, I was relieved to read what Jones had to say. I was afraid he left the Cal Lutheran football program for petty reasons because Ken Mosley wouldn't shake his hand.

OxyBob

I just call it like I see it. Loyalty is a big one to me. No way I would have left Redlands after three years, even if I could have played at another level. Coaching change or not, his move is a selfish one.

snoop dawg

I hardly think RFB or I are up in arms, we merely expressed our opinions, something that you think we are not entitled to do.......and your fishing lure doesnt have enough  hooks.

Sounds like a bit of a slap in the face to CLU,.....don't they play college football?

I was referring to this, OxyBob.  I did have "slap in the face to CLU," in quotes.    :D  Only used your post because it had Jones's quote in it.  Sorry to imply that I was talking directly to you.

Fight ULV

Wow, not only is this a slap to Cal Lu, but the SCIAC as a whole  >:( Yes, he is a very good QB, but I don't think I recall Collins saying or acting like this one bit and he was definitely a step above the rest; much more than Jones.

You know, only Jones knows what's going on in his head and heart . . . and none of us are going through the day to day environs at Cal Lu, so while the notion may be abhorrent to us . . . and I'm guessing to his teammates . . . perhaps we should look at the bright side . . .

Jones is transferring to UWW.

A "slap" at the SCIAC?  With all due respect . . . who gives a fig what he says?

If nothing else, his decision to wing his way east levels the playing field and, in all candor, improves Oxy's chances of staying on top, Redlands' opportunity to rise up and for all of the other programs to have a shot.  I have no idea who the best quarterback in the SCIAC will be this year . . . but a few months ago all of the smart the money would have been on Jones . . . now it's a horserace and we don't even know all of the ponies.

May I add that the 1st team Q.B race this year will definately now be in favor of either Goltz and Schurlock.

Btw, you guys should check out Whitters new and improve logo. The dude on the logo is sure scarry. Hahaha, yeah right. He's still a poet

Geez . . . the first things that went through my mind when I saw the new logo:

"Jack the Ripper?"
"Chester the Molester?"
"Wouldn't leave my kid in a room w/ him."

I have to wonder what "brilliant and thoughtful" minds got into a room and thought that logo was a good idea?
