Four days into camp and starters are not given the chance to compete, sounds like  to me the may be looking towards next year and writing this year off.

Could also be a motivational tactic.

Could also be the guy's honest feeling that the starters aren't as good as they think they are, or aren't good fits for his system, or he wants to build with youth. It's tough to accept if you're the guy getting passed over, but it happens.

Most likely it's an overreaction by a few guys who have not lost their jobs yet.

I find it hard to believe a coach has truly made up his mind 4 days into camp. And, even if he has, you can either sulk and suck, or bust your hump so the dude can't ignore you ... who's to say the guy in front of you, if he's really not as good as you, performs well enough to keep his job? Maybe he gets hurt Week 1 and you still get 8 or 9 starts.

Carve out a role, make it so he can't not play you, somewhere. You aren't entitled to jack just because you started before, especially when a new coach comes in.

Sounds like the first thing they need to do is lose the attitude. You might think you're not getting a chance, but everything you do in every single practice is a chance.

I can relate.

I spent my whole sophomore year behind a guy, same year, who didn't play that well from Week 1 on, and I eventually replaced as the starter my junior year and he quit before our senior year. I thought being behind him on the depth chart was a motivational tool. It wasn't. My coach pulled safeties and receivers over to corner and gave them shots in front of me. I didn't agree, but I guess he felt I wasn't ready.

It sucks. It's no fun.

But I also wouldn't panic just yet. Good things can still happen for each of these guys individually. Personally, I had four interceptions in my second game as a starter and started 20 games in a row. I definitely thought about transferring, and I definitely hated backing up someone I thought I was better than for 10 agonzing games, but there's not a whole lot you can do about the decisions you don't control. These guys have to control what they can.

Probably one of my favorite geographic realizations when out there in 2004 was realizing San Dimas (of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure fame) was a real place.

San Dimas High School Football Rules!

KM - There are a lot of really good high school teams in Southern California; San Dimas isn't one of them.  I did once have a secretary who lived there, though. 8)

The San Dimas Saints did make the playoffs last year.

TMerton,
It's a quote from the movie.

KiltedRat introduced me to Dumb and Dumber; I'm not sure I'm ready for B and T's Excellent Adventure.  8)

I agree with RFB, it's 4 days into camp for crying out loud!!!  Sounds to me like the kids in Thousand Oaks need to stop acting like a bunch babies over the whole situation.  It's not like they lost a coach that took them to the SCIAC crown.  SO they have won a little bit the past few years, that is in the past.  Losing your starting QB was bad enough but to have people crying that they were starters LAST YEAR just shows you what kind of kids they have their.  Sounds like somebody needs a kick in the rear to toughen up a little.  I guess driving your brand new truck to your brand new weight room isn't enough for these kids.  Oh yeah, I forgot, they have the ENTIRE football stadium locker to themselves.  I understand the desire to have a new field (which I don't disagree with) but do something about it.  Did the other sports just sit around and wait for the school to build their new facilities, my guess would be no.  I am gonna stop now cause I have no idea where I am going with this ;D

One of the former starters is one of the team leaders. Hits the weight room a week after the season is over to get ready for this year. He's probably the most hard working kid that CLU has. He earned his starting job as freshman after 4 weeks into the season. Started on the scout team and work his way up. For the coach to already know that he is not "athletic enough" after 2 days in pads and 5 days of practice is BS. The DC cannot evaluate talent when you don't give players a chance to prove themselves is beyond me.

HM,

Sounds like this kid you're speaking about is possibly your child. I can understand the frustration if so. Just know this, hard work is always rewarded. He has been successfull his full tenure there. He should look at it as a challenge and push the envelope even harder. It is still early in the season, good things happen to those that are patient.

Exactly.

Quote from: hatchet molly on August 22, 2007, 07:23:39 PMThanks guys. I guess I take it too personal. You're all right it, is still early and anything can happen. Blow a few guys up and coaches hopefully take notice.

I feel your pain, been there before myself.  Good luck to your son, I'm sure it will all work out for him.

Definitely, HM, I think that's all your son can do is turn up the heat and control what he can control.

I'm not "sure" it will work out for him, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

I am fairly sure that if he's the type to already be starting on defense for a college football team, he's the type who would step into a challenge rather than step away.

And if we learned anything from the guy at Sul Ross, give up too early and you might have regrets for a long time.

(I realize you had sort of settled this one, then I came along and added my two cents. Sorry, that's my flaw, I have to chime in)

D O.C.

CLU...I'm sorry for those who think this should be let go but...
if some of those players who misbehaved during the season last year and showed so poorly at Whittier at a critical time of the season are those who are back in the pack then it makes sense what the staff in Thousand Oaks is doing.

D O.C.       If your post is accurate you can rest assured that McEnroe will weed them out.  Either you buy into his way or.....it's the highway!  He will make CLU  a better program.

we dropped off the package at Whittier last night. Not a dry eye in the house. :)

Football season is here!!!

You would have thought I was never going to see the kid again instead of being only an hour away!! :o  But I'm a mom so I'm allowed.  ;D  Cant wait to go watch practice one of these days.  I'm so glad its football time again!!

Go Poets!!

I think it's been mentioned, but that's a fierce-lookin poet you guys got there.

Believe me you're not the first to mention that and probably won't be the last!!  It grows on you after awhile!!   ;D

Bob,

I can't believe " The Times" forgot to mention you and the Tooth in that  same trivia question. Weren't you 2 apart of that team?

Ooohhh . . . ow, ow, ow, ow, ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch . . .

The trivia question fails to acknowledge that they were all fraternity brothers as well.

Yes, my fraternity (which is no more).

As for OB . . . he was way too cool to be part of something so mundane as football or fraternity  ;)

I seem to recall that he had a distinct interest in certain horticultural endeavors.  It was a long time ago . . . it might have been more closely related to issues of chemical reactions triggered by applied heat sources and the attendant psycho-biological ramifications.

Then in that case, he should be mentioned with good ol' sentor obama and spicoli. (just kidding)

FYI, R.Ciasulli and Inahbit will both be regarded as the "go to guys in the recieving corps". Both of them came back in good condition and improved on their catching and strength during the summer. It should be good to see them in the endzone this year.

Sure, but with Goltz (or is that "Goulds?"  ;)) and Saunders deciding to quit football in order to play water polo, and no incoming QB's, it's gonna be hard to get the ball out to the receivers, though the mighty offensive line, averaging 130 lbs (a full 11 lbs over the average weight of the D-Line), protection clearly won't be an issue.

With all of the returning players, save for the receivers you mentioned, quitting the team because they are "sick and tired" of the "same old coaching staff" and things like "continuity" . . . opting instead for cross country and water polo glory (save for those who have chosen to trek to Nepal for a buddhist retreat), it will be a challenging year for the Tigers.

Yes, even the incoming frosh are demanding "new blood" in the coaching arena, urging the administration to comb the ranks of local pop warner and all american coaches to bring some badly needed "new blood" to the Oxy program.

I hear that some of the Franklin and Eagle Rock high staffs may be available for consultation.

The Tigers scrimmage Pasadena Polytechnic tonight at midnight.
