Thanks for the update Newbie,

I am sure that you'll learn this season that your son's team will do everything in it's power to get other teams to go Ape Sh**t (well maybe not that) and get the fits after 3-4 quaters of play. Just ask any of the supporters on this board.

please don't interrupt this very intriguing punter babble.

I'm curious. When was the last time Whittier had a guy in the NFL? Does George Allen count?

Speaking of babble, when will be treated to some more of FTP and DAW's Ricky and Lucy routine, or are we already in reruns?

If your claiming superiority becuase you have a kicker in the NFL, more power to you. Enjoy...and yes, Hall of Fame Coach Goerge Allen would be considered an NFL veteran. He was no punter, but he was good ;)

FTP, just so you don't embarass yourself, please read the following:

Over the years, the Tigers have boasted such standout players as All-America quarterback Jack Kemp '57, who played in the NFL for San Diego and Buffalo before launching a successful political career; tight end Jim Mora '57, head coach of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts; quarterback and defensive back Bill Redell '64, inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006; Rick Fry '78, who led the nation in receptions per game in 1976 and 1977; quarterback Tom Hamilton '78, the 1977 Division III leader in total offense and passing yards; Daniel Osborn '82, who led the nation in punting his senior year; and running back Vance Mueller '86, "Chevrolet Player of the Game" in Oxy's nationally televised 1982 victory over the University of San Diego, who went on to play six seasons with the NFL's Los Angeles Raiders.

As for the current status of Ohnesorge and the discussions thereon . . . as well as the discussion related to Whitworth's Michael Allan . . . over time you will come to realize that most DIII fans will pull for any/all DIII players having a shot in the NFL.  It is a rare circumtance and is a boost to DIII when one of its players goes on to pro status.  Last year many of us were watching and pulling for Linfield's Brett Eliott to make the Chargers, notwithstanding the fact that we were competitors with him over his last two years in the NCAA playoffs.

So Ohnesorge is a punter . . . he's still getting more of a shot than most DIII players ever will, and it's a worthwhile topic while we wait for the season to begin.

As for DawgHeaven's post, I'm guessing that he drives a sports car to compensate for other "little" failings from which he suffers.

My impression is that even with the competitive/adversarial dialogue between Oxy and Redlands fans on this board, most are grounded in reality . . . DawgHeaven, you're invited to smell the coffee anytime you wish.  For example, Oxy has won 4 of the 6 SCIAC football crowns in the 21st Century, three w/ Collins, one without.  And do I really have to go back again to post the overall results of the history between Oxy and Redlands, in which Oxy, not Redlands, has the most wins?

You guys are forgetting Whittier's Don Coryell.

Soon, we will all be cheering on a long snapper from Redlands. :)

without or without your wisdom, I will find ways to embarrass myself, don't you worry about that. Of course I support the Div 3 players. My comments were  tongue and cheek, directed at Mr. Wonderful.

Plus Karma to you FTP for your good natured response to my rather snarky reply.

And, just to keep us lively as the clock ticks down to opening kickoffs . . .

Props to Redlands Men's Water Polo for its #1 DIII preseason ranking
Pomona for its #2 ranking
Cal Lu for its #5 ranking
CMS for its # 6 ranking
LaVerne for its # 7 ranking
Whittier for its # 8 ranking
Oxy for its # 10 ranking

Others in the top 10 include the Mighty Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz (#3), Johns Hopkins (#4) and Chapman (#8).

I have no reason to think that those are not accurate figures [but I have not done any independent research to verify].  Here's my view . . . if we go historic, we go all the way . . . if not, let's stay w/i the time in which our current players played, or at least had direct connection.  Otherwise, pretty damn arbitrary.

How do the figures change, for example, if we arbitrarily choose to go from 1980 to 2006?

cheers,

tooth ;)

you are classic! funny stuff.

I think we will skip the vandalism this year, except when it comes to Water Polo, then we go "gangsta"!

Don't worry Newbiw(FTP), we all make mistakes at first on this board.
As most of the older folk on this board have mentioned, you will be surprised at how many people end up rooting for any D3 player who has a chance to make it to the pro's. Heck, check out the SCIAC baseball board sometime in the future and just see how many of us have supported guys from other schools getting a chance to shine in the bigs.

In the mean time, let's just get ready for some football....

In the recent history I would say a 75-18 record is a very good football program, must be doing something right.

Gee, I would have thought that all of those star gridiron players choosing the cooler pool, would have boosted Oxy to a higher rank.  Maybe even better players are hitting the pools at the other schools. I guess that's the downside to offering water polo in the SCIAC. :P

GF:  I've known a small number of aquatic animals (swimmers and water polo players) make the successful transition to land based sports (rugby, football) but never anyone going in the other direction.

And NC Dawg, no one said Redlands doesn't have a good/great program, it clearly does.  Just saying that your BDawg brother, DawgHeaven, offered comments about Oxy doing nothing absent Collins which demonstrated ignorance, suggesting he is, perhaps, overcompensating for feelings of inadequacy over recent flaccid performance.

I have to admit this is the first time we've been referred to as Ricky & Lucy, but just like the poets mascot...it can grow on you!!  :D  Don't worry, I'm sure I'll have plenty of "babble" here in the near future,  however if you ask FTP, I'm sure he'll tell you I never stop!! ::)
