Just back from our night out that kept me away from Patterson Field . . . way to go Tigers . . .

nevertheless, sure sounds like Cal Lu has replaced the wheels that had come off . . . and Whittier, regardless of this loss, always has to be considered a spoiler . . .

There's a lot of season remaining . . . . the pressure's on Oxy . . . like coach W said in the Star News piece . . . every game is a playoff game . . .

eat'em up Tigers

And thanks Dawg and Rat for creating the play by play history so that some of us late arrivals could get a bit of the flavor . . .

And Stanford over USC . . . HOLY SH** . . . props to the Cardinal . . . 41 point underdogs!  Think I'll head over to the NWC board and see what happened to our northern bretheren today.

Io Triumphe!

we have alot of work to do...being a spoiler sucks!!!
we will see what the Poets are made of

Isn't football season the best time of the year?

Every Saturday is exciting.
Two words:  THE STREAK

snoop dawg

well....at least I met DO.C.

It was a very good game, I didnt think the Oxy O would move the ball the way they were abel to.  They played very well.  Both teams played hard and with alot of heart.  Congrats to the Tigers on a big win and keeping their streak alive.

On a less positive note,  the announcer was the most annoying I have ever heard , even more so than PP's last year.  Wow, I havnt heard the crowd be warned about booing the refs before by an announcer and threatening to throw you out if you did.  What a clown......and oh yeah, "lets support both teams in a positive way"....Im all for that, except he needed to practice what he preached.  I always thought the announcer should be, somewhat neutral.  It was really funny after the game to hear the UR crowd boo the announcer.  He deserved it.

D O.C.

IMO...Selway reminds me of a several time SCIAC Player of the Year. If there is a better Qb in that league I hope to see him. He has really improved now that he plays regularly. So has the Redlands team. Seven (7) costly penalties will keep you from beating anybody. That's how many I kept track of at critical points of the game.

Quote1st and 10 UR on their own 25.  5:47 left

That part of the game took about 25 minutes to play. Dawgs57 posted that at 12:55:39 am.  He ended the game at 01:21:35 am.
Yes, Redlands could have connected on a bomb and tied the game at any time in that penalty-ridden span.
Key=OXY taking the away the ball at their own 2 yard line after Redlands went 96 yards to get there.
Ask me how I found snoopdawg in that full stadium and how he was the first person I asked. Must be Central Casting and, no, I'd not offer to introduce him to OxyBob who was kind enough to "save" me a seat.

Tom Brady

Snoop Dawg I am going to booooo you right now.  Is there ever anything positive you can say about anything or do you have to make negative comments all the time?  Every other school but Redlands OBVIOUSLY does things terribly wrong.  So you didnt like the OXY PA guy.....nobody asked for your opinion on it.  You know what I hate about going to Redlands to watch?  EVERYTHING!

Honestly man, there are some of us that have seen it all from you and this just backs everything up.  Sorry to everyone else if this is going to start a pissing match and I am not pointing out any other UR fans because you guys know how to win and lose with a little bit of class.  I realize this is an open board and we are all allowed to say what we want but come on man, we have all been through this with you enough.

ncdawg11

Congrats to OXY and Coach Widloff on his 150th win.Bulldogs made way too many mistakes to win this game, penalties, turnovers and dropped passes, ouch!Redlands made some good halftime adjustments and looked like they might do it,but more mistakes struck again in the second half. One unfortunate thing my son told us about after the game was some of Redlands players wallets and phones came up missing at half time, too bad, hope it didnt happen to the Oxy players.Well its time to regroup, win out and hope for some help to make it to the playoffs.

GO BULLDOGS!

P.S. SD....The announcer was annoying in more than one way.

Sabretooth Tiger

I clearly wasn't at the game . . . and I have no idea about how the announcher did his/her job . . . but the comments about trying to get the crowd to stop booing the refs . . . I have a recollection that DIII has civility standards that it places on member schools regarding efforts to "maintain civility" including crowd conduct at hosted events.

For example, last year was the first time I'd heard that the crowd had to give the teams and staff a five minute "cooling off" period before joining them on the field (5, 10, 15, can't recall which) . . . all designed to lessen the risk of risky confrontational behavior . . .

Not making any comments on whether such rules are good or bad, don't care to get into that debate . . . but I believe that their existence explains the announcer's comments.

Pat . . . does this sound right to you?

Believe: Adversity Aside, Tigers Football Wins Big Game 28-21

Los Angeles, Calif. (October 7, 2007)

Despite the prospect of a competitive team on the horizon coupled with key injuries on the Tigers squad, Occidental College Football stretched their regular season winning streak to 30 games as they defeated the University of Redlands 28-21 on D.W. Patterson Field in SCIAC play tonight.

On a night that Dale Widolff, 25 year head coach, recorded the 150th victory of his career, the Tigers had to overcome much adversity. In addition to the Oxy injury report Redlands, one of the toughest teams Occidental will face in 2007, accumulated 539 total yards while the Tigers racked up only 299.

The Tigers first possession of the game ended with a 16 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Justin Goltz to sophomore Chris Washington.

A fired up Bulldogs squad responded with a touchdown of their own on the ensuing possession, knotting the score at 7-7.

Washington then put the Tigers in good field position with a 40 yard kick off return to the 50 yard line. Redlands helped the Oxy offense with two of their 17 penalties of the game, on the drive. Occidental senior Jason Haller continued to be successful after transitioning from a linebacker to a wide receiver a week ago. He drove 11 yards down the field before gaining another four yards by foot for the second Tigers score in as many chances. Neil Martin finished off the four-play, 50 yard drive, with a PAT that gave the Tigers a 14-7 advantage, one they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

On their first possession of the second quarter Oxy added to their lead (21-7) when Goltz connected with Joey Coverson for a 27 yard pass.

For a second time the Bulldogs cut the deficit just before the half when Redlands QB Dan Selway launched a 35 yard pass that found the hands of Kyle Godfrey. The scoreboard read 21-14 as the teams headed into the locker rooms.

Ten minutes into the third quarter Haller again ran his way into the end zone. He picked up one yard after senior defensive back Daniel Tromello made an amazing juggling catch for an interception at the Oxy 25 yard line that he returned 74 yards.

Again the Bulldogs responded with a score on their next possession. Selway sent a 44 yard toss that landed in the arms of Brian Putman for the final score of the game as both teams were unable to score in the fourth quarter.
Oxy was able to convert three chances in the red zone, but was just 4-13 on third down conversions and tallied just 17 first downs. Redlands finished the game with 27 first downs and were .500 on fourth down chances (9-18).

Redlands got just 101 yards by foot, as the Tigers played the run well limiting their leading rusher, Selway, to 32 yards.

Penalties hurt the Bulldogs tonight as they were called for 17 totaling 111 yards while the Tigers finished with just three for a loss of 24 yards.

Offensively Goltz finished the game 19-32 for 220 total yards (two touchdowns) and was picked off once. Haller and Rocky Ciasulli finished with 61 yards on the ground and in the air respectively. Jason Lehman led the Tigers with 64 receiving yards on five catches.

Washington, who caught two passes for 22 yards, is a multi-facet players who contributed on special teams as well with two kick returns for 59 total yards.

Occidental's defense did a fantastic job as they faced 87 Redlands plays. James Leonard led the Tigers defense with 8.0 tackles, all solo. Four different players, Adam Dunbar, JD Ciasulli, Jarred Salha and Tromello, each totaled 4.5 tackles, with all but Tromello earning four solo tackles. Salha was all over the place as he broke up five plays. Tromello and Aaron Stanton were each credited with breaking up three. Tommy Andre had the only Tigers sack of the day when he brought Selway back 11 yards.

As it has been all season, the Oxy kicking game was solid. Punter Alex Groh booted the ball five times for a total of 219 yards including two inside the 20 yard line. His 51 yard punt was the longest of the night, but a 45 yard kick in the third quarter landed on the 1 yard line. On the night he averaged 43.8 yards per punt.

Redlands had two players with over 100 yards receiving with Godfrey grabbing 10 catches for 117 yards and Putman catching four for 103. Each of them scored a touchdown in the contest. Selway's aerial assault combined for 438 yards (30-59-2) with two TDs and a pair of interceptions.

The Tigers remain undefeated on the season at 4-0 and are tied atop the SCIAC with Cal Lutheran at 2-0. Redlands drops to 3-1 overall and is now 0-1 on the season in conference match-ups.

"This is a big win for us," said Widolff. "Our kids believe in themselves and their abilities. Tonight they went out and showed that."

A variety of injuries have called upon a number of players to switch positions and allowed some young blood to showcase their talents, all the while playing for a common reason. "This squad is a very unselfish one. Occidental has a culture where the kids don't make excuses, they want to succeed."

As long as the team maintains its strong work ethic, improving day by day, the program will continue to succeed.

Saturday, Oct. 13 the Tigers will host the winless University of La Verne Leopards (0-4, 0-2 SCIAC) at 7:00 p.m. at Patterson Field.

I'm going out on limb and say that the announcer telling the crowd not to boo the refs is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard.  I don't know if that's a rule or not but 1) if it is, it's the worst rule ever created and 2) I've never heard that announcement at a Linfield game and that crowd will get on the refs if need be.

Why don't we stop keeping score and hold hands in a circle and sing campfire songs...

Sounds like it was a good game though!   ;)

TJ Simers has a piece in today's L.A. Times  on LA Colleges dropping big ones yesterday . . . something about USC losing to Stanford and UCLA giving the Irish their first victory . . .

But the dude forgot mention the third corner of the LA college triangle . . . the triumphant tigers of occidental . . . ah TJ, you are so disinclined to make mistakes of omission like this.

Ironic as the last word in the column is "maybe it's time to root for Pomona Pitzer."

Wild Thing....sorry you didn't like my post.

Again, it was a great game and both teams played hard.  It's why you pay an admission.

I am all for civility at a game.  The Redlands fans are great.  It was insulting to be scolded by an announcer before and during the game when both teams' fans were exhibiting good sportsmanship.  The only time anyone got on the refs and, may have booed, was during the self destructing 6 penalties as referred to by OB.  Quite honestly, I can say that I saw at least four of them and they were not bad calls. The other two, I don't know about.

He kept saying over and over and over that the fans have to support both teams in a positive way, yet, he antagonized fans with his," and thaaattts anooothhhter Tigggeeeerrrr fiiiirrrrsssst dooownnn", or, "that penalty was costly for the Bulldogs"....please just get the down and yardage right, the players involved and announce it.

The most annoying announcement was something like this.....Occidental will not tolerate any racial, ethnic, etc. slurs from the fans, or any antagonistic remarks directed toward the refs, ...this is cause for ejection.....I'm paraphrasing but, if he said it once, which I could understand, he said it a dozen times.  Sorry, just my opinion, he was insulting.

Both teams' fans were polite, enthusiastic and made the game fun to watch.  The Oxy hospitality was very nice, from the fans to the concession stand. It was funny that at half time, I was standing in the aisle talking with another parent and DO.C. came up and  asked me if any UR parents were at the game, he was looking for me.  Nice guy, glad I met him.  Is that positive enough for you Wild Thing?

Congrats to Coach Wildoff on a great accomplishment and career, his team was very prepared and played a great game.  Oxy should be proud to have him as their coach.

Sorry I missed you OB, just thought it was better to remain pen pals. ;)

Wild Thing,

Whether you happen to like snoop dawg or not, it IS ridiculous to tell people that you can not boo.  I coach a youth football team in Colorado, and that stuff barely happens at that level, let alone college.  Having said that, it sounded like there were only a small amount of questionable calls.  In my opinion, it sounds like OXY has stopped watering down the field and resorted to this stuff.  ;D

Really, UR has nobody to blame but themselves, what with 17 penalties.  I was on a Bulldog team that was "uncharacteristically undisciplined" in 2001, and the "cure" was an interesting one. One 40 yard sprint for every yard in penalties.  I wonder if that will go into effect this week?

I think the Dawgs will rebound and keep the pressure on OXY.
