Impressive OB, I once thought that I was a SCIAC whiz, but you are pretty darn knowledgeable.  Your researching skills are unmatched.

I'll go back to watching Fox News and drinking my double malt scotch as my night cap.

Catch you gents tomorrow.

By the way, I was 4 for 4 in my picks this past weekend.  I'll try and handicap this weekends.  Maybe I'll get lucky again.  Not that luck had anything to do with it, I picked favorites at home.   ;)

Glad to see clarification on the chop block which is illegal, cutting someone at the knees is legal as long as he is not engaged with another blocker.  I am sure that the coaches would have screamed bloody murder if guys were getting  chopped block all day long and if they were getting chopped that officiating crew should be suspended for not calling it.
Then the officating crew should be suspended...because they weren't calling it and they were "chop" blocking.

EIther they were or they weren't and I'm sure the film will tell; get a copy of the game film and take it up with the coaches or take it to the league.  This same charge was leveled up here in the Bay Area by a high school parent a few weeks ago.  She posted two charges about it in a local newspaper blog saying the film would tell - but that's the last we've heard.

Either way, Whittier lost.  This week they should have an easier time against another team of their caliber.

As for teams winning four straight titles, Whittier did it twice.  The last time they did it, Godfrey was their coach.

In my prior post I neglected to mention Whittier. The Poets won eight straight SCIAC titles from 1957-1964 under three coaches -- George Allen, Don Coryell, and John Godfrey. Whittier also won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

Wow 8 straight is definitely impressive. As for Whittier rebuilding, it seems like they have been rebuilding for the last few years. Every year you hear about how young of a team they are and how much potential they have. Are these youngsters not sticking around till their senior year? Every year it seems they are poised to finally make their mark on the SCIAC and go from a rebuilding team to a contender and it seems in the last few years they have always come up short. Since my Freshman year at Oxy in 2003 Whittier has always played right there with us but they are unable to pull it out in the end. This year seems to be no different as they have showed early promise but have fallen a little in the last two games. Hopefully they can rebound, because it will only be better for the SCIAC if we had more teams fighting for the title rather than just the big three.
4 is the smallest composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 2. 4 is the smallest squared prime. 4 is the only number in the English language for which the number of letters in its name is equal to the number itself. 4 is also the number of titles in a row the tigers will have in '07!! Those pesky Poets  :P have been able to play with the best and hang in games since 00'. There is no doubt that they will always cause teams to get the"fits" as most of have pointed out in the past, but, it its just a matter of "can the purple people finish an entire game". (And yes we have heared of them doing this several times)

Btw, the drum stays at the Rock in 07.

As a former O-Lineman in the SCIAC, I feel qualified to comment, though it looks like the topic was beaten into the ground.

I played left Tackle at UR, and I used the Cut Block regularly.  The proper technique involves driving your shoulders through the thigh, not the knee.  It is much more effective the higher you make contect - as the thigns are closer to the center of gravity.  No offensive lineman that I know is trying to injure their opponent.  Just to slow down some of the aggression.

I typically looked at film and if a guy liked to bull rush, or just sprint hard off the edge (one dimensional), I picked my spots.  I liked to use a cut block typically on the second series of the game.  It's a mind game really.  You let the guy get real aggressive, let him get caught up in the emotion and adrenaline mix, and let him think he's making progress pushing you into the QB.  Then BAM!  You throw a well timed, well place cut, and you have him thinking about it for the rest of the game.  It slows the pass rush, and forces him to try other techniques.  I liked to cut early, then let the flow of the game go and then cut a guy late in the game.  If a player is using the block more often than that, he's hiding a deficiency.

If you think it's dirty - that's too bad.  It's a part of the game - a physical game - that puts people in health threatening situations multiple times per play, per game per practice.  Besides, defending it really isn't that difficult - get your hands out and onto the OL.  Read the type of block and react.  If defended properly, that OL will NEVER try to cut you again.  Nothing like getting a mouthful of grass because you just got your face driven into the ground.

Hmmm...as the thighs have reinforced padding in them = complete separation of the acromio-clavicular joint.

Here are the Strength of Schedule rankings:

Redlands -- 4
Claremont -- 50
La Verne -- 53
Whittier -- 85
Cal Lutheran -- 207
Pomona -- 218
Occidental -- 220

The only teams I could find on the list with lower opponent's winning percentages than Oxy were Manchester and Gallaudet, which makes sense since Oxy turns a deaf ear to scheduling any decent non-conference opponents.

OxyBob
At least our oppenents opponents play well.
