Sorry, can you repeat that, I am having a hard time reading after falling off my chair but I swear you just said something positive about CLU.  Man, you are losing your edge :D

RFB-  Do you believe if both Redlands and Whitworth win out, and CLU wins 1 of 2, Redlands will get in?  I am not trying to pick a fight here but why would the NCAA take UR over OXY (if OXY wins out)?  I honestly do not see how they could take UR over OXY if both have 1 loss.  The bottom line is not that Redlands beat Whitworth, but the fact that they lost to OXY.  Like I said, this is an honest question and I am wondering your outlook on it.

I think they take Redlands for a few reasons. First, they beat the NWC Champs on the road. Also, Redlands would have won five games in a row and beat Cal Lu on the road. This is exactly where I think scheduling strong non-conference opponents makes the difference. Oxy has two wins over very weak opponents in Menlo & Lewis/Clark. Couple that with Oxy getting beat quite handily at home by Cal Lu and struggling against teams (CMS, Pomona) that Redlands beat by four touchdowns+ each. I just don't think they could leave a team out that was eight points away from a perfect season with a huge signature win. A lot of football still needs to be played.

MCat - what a stunningly insightful analysis.  I stand thoroughly corrected.
Glad to be of service ;)  Just keeping you all honest when you start to make excuses (I'm certainly a member of the excuses anonymous 12 step program after last year when Linfield was "left out in the cold" because of a half dozen stupid turnovers...)

RFB-  Very valid argument.  I am not gonna say I don't agree with you, but I find it very tough to see Redlands going over OXY if they both have 8-1 records and that is ONLY due to the fact that OXY beat them.  Like you said though, there is a lot of football yet to be played.

Now that was sure funny MCAT. I sure hope i never end up getting membership to the excuses anonymous program

Can anyone state for sure that,  if UR beats CLU and they, along with Oxy, finish with the same league record, that CLU get the AQ based on the "Rose Bowl" rule?

Any post season selection criteria used that does not send the best team from that conference is flawed. The problem in using the Rose bowl rule as the second most important criteria in picking a representative of the league for post season play is that it has nothing to do with who is the best team. Maybe if it was used as a fifth or sixth criteria then ok.

Sending a team because "I am sorry, it's been so long since you've been to the playoffs, so you should go" reminds me of handing out participation trophy's in T Ball, We don't want to have anyone feel bad now do we? Or how about this one, "We just want to be more fair for everyone!" Remember, it takes a village. Ugh!

What happened to power rankings. Even high schools use them for playoffs.  If Oxy, Redlands, and CLU all end up 8-1, and SCIAC does not send it's strongest team, whoever you think that is, then shame on our conference.

How many other conferences use the "Rose bowel" rule? If the rest of them do, then I'll be quiet and pull out my blankee and take a nap.

Correction to the 8-1 record for all three, must have been a Freudian slip. Of course I meant... 4-1 conference record.  ...ahem ::)

OB........I understood your explanation the first time, and Im not saying your wrong, I guess I had trouble with the "someone in the know" part of your explanation.

I agree with RedBulldog, The Rose Bowl rule is just a lousy way to determine who gets the AQ bid.  Even though CLU  beat Oxy handily, I am not convinced they are the strongest of the three SCIAC  leaders, especially if they lose at home to UR.

If the SCIAC  ends in a three way tie, I cant believe that either the SCIAC  or the NCAA cant come up with a formula that will at least attempt to give the bid to who they feel is the strongest team.

Pat Coleman

The problem is that other tiebreakers are all flawed as well. Point differential encourages teams to run up the score, which isn't very Division III-like. Strength of schedule is used in some leagues but why the usual objection is why should you use your non-conference games to decide your conference? Common non-conference opponents could be helpful but has the same issue, plus, they aren't usually helpful.

RBR is a last resort but at least it is guaranteed to work, unless three teams are tied who have never been to the playoffs/won the title.

It's not the NCAA's place to determine the SCIAC's champion.

Thats the sound of any team that plays at OXY, finding out at half time, that some OXY folks have entered and stolen all their wallets and personal items.  Really over shawdowed the second half of a great game.

Hey ***hole, before you go casting stones . . . do you have any evidence that it was "Oxy folks" that did the stealing rather than local thugs who might not have any relation to Oxy other than trespassing?  If you do, have you reported it to the police and Oxy security?  If not, perhaps you should STFU as to slinging that kind of garbage.

I was going to have a similar reaction to Tooth but he beat me too it.  Apparently we both woke up with a chip on our shoulder, but I'll take the more righteous route.

If you have any information regarding said oxy folks that stole the collective wealth of the Redlands football team, please contact Campus Safety so said oxy folks can be dealt with appropriately.
