and yes, we have lineman that size here!!!!

Hint: We don't brag on size.  Everyone is bigger than the Johnnies.

This is true.  You will get arguments all day long about athleticism--which many posters have mentioned might be an advantage for Redlands--but you will get no arguments about size.  I'd imagine the Bulldogs are bigger than the Johnnies, just like every WIAC, IIAC and most MIAC teams are.

I'll save you the trouble of looking.  Here are the front four that started for SJU on Saturday:
Mitch Eversman, 6-1, 225
Joe Luke, 6-0, 230
Nick Gunderson, 6-4, 250
Mike Schumacher, 6-3, 225

As you mentioned, you can usually knock a dozen or so pounds off the listed weights.  I'll leave those adjustments up to you.

Actually, after pulling up the Redlands starters from last week's game, it looks like the lines--size-wise at least--are nearly identical:
Nick Burruel, 6-2, 242
Mitchell Crocco, 6-0, 230
Gavril Gabriel, 6-1, 250
Brock Arndt, 6-2, 220

The same is generally true across the O-lines as well--St. John's may actually have a size "advantage" there.  Still, I'll believe Redlands is more athletic than St. John's when I see it.

Here are a few arguments that you can win easily:
--Redlands has much more picturesque mountain views than St. John's.
--Redlands has more attractive female students than St. John's.
--Redlands has warmer weather than St. John's.

Yes, ANY girl at Redlands would look much better than TDT in a skirt.

TC,

Thanks for the breakdown!  Playing at Redlands I understand what its like to be undersized...I played DL around 245...and thats what makes the D3 game so great...the players use technique!!!  I think it will be a good one...I just didn't like the comment that the SCIAC had no player like Nick Gunderson...OxyBob can help me out..but Oxy had a DL (forget his name now) in 2002 and 2003 who was a stud...I think he had a shot with the Patriots at some point...we also breed legit talent here!

redlands fan- if SJU happens to win this weekend... please don't actually puke... because then people will be talking about how they are a dominant program.
Not to be an ass (which I only am to Scrippsies), but their program has done more historically than UoR, so they do deserve the talk that comes with the history. If UoR steps up, then maybe the talk was a little much this season. But to this point, they haven't done anything to not deserve their reputation. Besides, not the entire country is talking about it. Ohio cares more about Mount, and the East has plenty of other things to worry about than SJU.

All that said, I'm sure it will be a fine game and I'll be pulling for the SCIAC.

Yes, go ahead and throw the barb of when will CMS have a winning season again or win a conf title. I'll be happy with consistent 5-4 and the occasional 6-3 or better.. maybe a title would be nice. But that's about it. I am working within the situation - UoR has a greater budget and resources devoted to football than CMS and it shows. While I am fan of the SCIAC, I am a bigger fan of DIII football, possibly because at times I have split loyalties, and try to judge the signifiance of SCIAC events w/in the entire DIII picture.

On the recruiting note- redlands fan, you may want to think about that again. I bet that Linfield coaches do make trips to SoCal (if the league permits it, because the OAC, for example, does not permit off campus recruting). I do know that coaches in other conferences outside of the SCIAC take recruiting trips.

If you would like to bring something Southern California-esque to share, that would be a treat.

You want them to bring quiche and sushi?  ???

I'm actually a pretty huge quiche fan.  A ham, cheese and mushroom quiche would be fabulous!

EastCoast,

About the recruiting...I should have said that schools like Linfield or any expensive University usually don't spend time recruiting kids in Southern California because many of the kids come from inner city programs and can't afford the price tag of a Redlands or Linfield.  Everyone always talks about the population of Southern and how rich the football talent is, and I agree...but Redlands has no shot at 98% of those kids because of the school's price tag....many of them end up going to juco, or a NAIA school.  Can't blame the kids, but its a shame we can't keep them local.

2003 SJU over Linfield
2002 SJU over Redlands
2002 SJU over Linfield
2001 SJU over PLU

rf- I find it surprising that there is not more money thrown around.
I know several players from my HS class or from other schools (HS) who received "academic money" to go play in the NESCAC or other conferences. Now, this is not to knock need-based scholarships or need-based money, but affluent schools such as Linfield, Bowdoin, Trinity (CT), Washington & Lee, to name a few, do go out of their way to create an over-diversified school population (let's not start a diversity argument here) and use need-based money to accomplish this, and will toss around money for academics when it is for athletics. I grew up near a NESCAC school and was more than one player on that roster from a struggling background (or what one could consider inner city for Northern New England) who received "academic money". So, I would think that if Linfield wanted an inner city kid who had the potential to thrive there academically, they would be able to do so. This is, of course, dependent on endowment money. Maybe UoR does this... maybe they don't. But if their endowment is large enough, then I would assume there are slotted spots in admissions and policies in place to accomplish this since it would benefit the diversity of the school, as well as the atheletic programs.
How do I know this? I had a family member who was a dean of admis. at a DIII school for a significant amount of time and discussed the process with me when I was being recruited, as well as another family member who was an admis officer for a period of time. He never slotted players for any program, but was a huge fan of going into the inner city schools and finding those who would thrive in the right lib arts program. That, and I was a recipient of an academic scholarship at the DIII institution I attended prior to CMC. (legit, no ties to athletics)
Recruiting at the DIII level is serious business. And I am sure that UoR has chances at the JUCO kids as well. I do remember seeing several JUCO faces running around the SCIAC in my days.

Hey Redlands fan,

The former Oxy player, former SCIAC defensive player of the year and former teammate that you mentioned was good ol'  Kevin Watson. Yes, the kid was good enough to get into the patriots training camp.

Glad to see the Johnnie fans crawling onto our page. Welcome.
Hey, Johnnies, be ready for the Pup D to show up and play their behinds off. I am sure RedlandsFan can attest to that.

Hey, Johnnies fans, before you start busting out the SoCal surfer-dude, quiche/sushi eating, we-all-hang-out-with-Paris-Hilton stereotypes, you should know that Redlands, though picturesque and a nice place to live, is hardly the center of all things steretypical LA.  It's 63 miles and about a two-hour drive (in normal traffic) to the heart of Hollywood.  So, it's about like busting out all the New York stuff on someone from Poughkeepsie.

That said, enjoy a Hamms on me in the ice-fishing shack. ;)
