Klopenheimer-

Fear not, I have deep mid-western roots and know the history of the Cubs, and their fan base fairly well.

It is evident after reading this that you have not been to Chicago, let along followed baseball in the last 30 years.  The Cubs get hammered on two points.  One being that they have not won anything in 100 years, and secondly that they fill the ball park to capacity day in and day out with people who do nothing but socialize.

The above quote was my point, sort of (perhaps I should have used the sarcasm tags?).  More that the Cubs have an extremely loyal following even with their complete lack of success.  Is their actual fan base always mirrored by who is in the stands?  No.  I have been to many games at Wrigley and know that there's plenty of folks there just for the experience (something that I agree has changed a lot over the last 15 years or so).

As for the south side, well, it's pretty funny to watch all the people who now claim lifetime allegiance to the Sox post-2005.  I went to games in old Comiskey where the attendance was less than 6 or 7 thousand, and a couple in the new park where there weren't many more folks than that.

Regardless, Chicago's a great city - and I hope that if the Cubs ever do win one their fan base will not become completely intolerable like Red Sox Nation.

Scandi I have deep roots in Chicago and deep roots with the Chicago Cubs baseball in general.

Let me be clear and state for the record that he Cubs has horsesh*(% fans until the introduction of Harry Carey and the marketing machine that created the lets go to the ballgame attitude.

Let's ask Lee Elia what he thinks of Cubs fans.

For those of you with tender sensibilities, cover your ears.

HAHA......For a second there I thought that that was good Ol' Lou Penella on his recent to trip to Chavez Ravine.

Oh, by the way, Stealth, please tell me that you will not be coming down to Dodger Stadium during opening week. I am sure you would definately survive here if you ever visited ;D

So now both my grandfathers, my Dad and all my uncles are all horsesh*(% ? :D

Good point about Harry Caray joining the Cubs in 1982.  Exposure on the WGN Superstation obviously played a big role in his (and the Cubs) popularity as well (The more seasoned posters on this board will remember the early days of cable, and how cool it was to be able to watch the Braves and Cubs whenever you wanted, until you realized how bad they both were).  I think the final thing that reinvigorated their fan base was their NL East title (and almost sweep of the NLCS) in 1984.  Apparently, just being in the proximity of the World Series was enough to get the Cubs faithful going.

Thats right Scandii, I forgot that you are also part of that old farts' group on this board. Haha ;D

Gezze, at 9 i was already jumping for joy when the 88' Dodgers took the series. You know how that one ended.
One day, one day old man, you and your fam. will witness the cubbies make it to the World Series, but then eventually lose.  :P

Ummmmmmmmm 1984 makes me think about Cubs catcher Jody Davis blasting a grand slam against the Mets, and Harry going so nuts that he could not even talk.

Hahaha. Nice try newbie. But just to remind you, the 04' Dodgers actually won one playoff game at Dodger stadium against St. Louie...haha ( ya, ya, ya, i know it was one playoff game,).

Btw, D O.C I'll be lighting a torch for the "all greats" that made it possible for a young buck like me and others to enjoy such a great sport in L.A. Hope to see, Mr. Koufax, C.M.S's/ former All SCIAC Wes Parker, and other greats on hand for the festivities. It should be fun watching the BoSox crumble.  ;D
