This mans mother had been a teacher in California as well.  She said that on nice days her attendance was horrible because the kids would skip school to go surfing.  Now, that could be a reflection of the lower level of California kids and the competition for the top level students could be fierce.
Where did she teach, Bayside High?

Get over it.  Attedance will be down in California when it's sunny.  On the other hand, attendance will be low in Iowa when it's snowing.  Students of all ages look for good reasons to skip class regardless of setting.

Will take exception with the snow comment.  If it snows hard enough there is no attendance in that school as school is cancelled.  Then they have to make up that day.
As do California students.  Except here we call it catching up and we do it during the course of our normal day.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

You have missed my point entirely.   If that is so the logic dictates they would have more success in the class room regardless of the level of academics.  Is this not logical.
No, it is not logical.

Quote
The stats provided by Oxy Bob state that the SCIAC schools have =/- a 10% higher admissions standard than Central.  Shouldn't they then have 10% more all americans?  They are 10% pickier than Central.  Even if they are 10% tougher academically they should be able to produce the same amount of all americans then.
What if Oxy is 20-30% tougher?

Then they should have 20-30% more all americans as they are 20-30% better students are they not?
There is not a direct correlation between the academic standards that SCIAC schools place on applicants and their performance in the class room once they have been admitted.

There is a break between applicant and student that you (we) are failing to define.  The applicants at SCIAC schools are being judged on their performance in high school -- which hopefully we can all agree is easier than college everywhere.  Once they get into a SCIAC school, they are pushed 20-30% (not my numbers) harder than other institutions.  Therefore the grades they recieve while attending the SCIAC school of their choice have no connection to how well they did before that point.
Go TIGERS!!!

Pat,
Logged on this morning and thought my links were all discom-Oxybob-ulated   ::)
You need to start a new board for the DIII academics debate. What the hell is going on here ? Frickin twlight zone. We've been here ad nausea months ago. Let's talk football.

You want to talk football but you're over on the WIAC board trying to recruit those posters to join in this debate about academic standards and work ethic?

There is plenty of extra .php on the WIAC thread to prop up your boy DJ if you’re so inclined.

Maybe you need to take your plane back in the hanger for a long “D” check.

A point taken about the students performance.  I think the thing I found to be in error is that the admissions standards were so much higher in the SCIAC.  Oxy Bob's stats not mine.  If that is true then you should have a higher performing student at the high school level than Central should you not?  Again not my numbers but OB's.  That being said then should the SCIAC's athletes be able to perform better or at least the same as Central's?  This is why I think that the whole thing to say that the SCIAC not being able to perform because of academic admissions does not hold water.  There has to be other reasons.  I do not pretend to know what they are but the admissions thing I do not think holds water as if it did your athletes would be making academic all american more often than the rest of the schools should they not?

Of course, we'll have to excuse you as you could not possibly have known that some schools require actual reading, writing and thinking. There are no majors in "snowmobile repairs," "an idiot's guide to harvesting sweet corn," or "cattle slaughter."

I once flew to Pella, Iowa, in late November. When the plane landed the stewardess said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we are now arriving in Iowa. Please set your watches back 25 years." I took a lot of pictures while I was there so I could show everyone back home what Hell actually looks like when it freezes over.

Also, they don't grow sweet corn in Iowa. They grow inedible yellow dent corn, which is used to make corn sweeteners and also used as cattle feed. High fructose corn syrup is added to junk food and fast food, and makes consumers obese and diabetic, and the cattle feed makes cows sick and beef extra fatty and far less healthy. So actually Iowa is poisoning America.

OxyBob

You are terribly misinformed.  More of the how should I say the California hubris there.  There are  fields of sweet corn in Iowa.  There are plants that can and freeze sweet corn.  I think your comments are a slap at all in the midwest.  You evidently have an elitest attitude and are very misinformed.  None of your statements are factual.  It must be that good SCIAC education that your have received that lead you to your misinformed statements.

Not work ethic. No contest. Getting up at 6 am in below freezing weather to shovel your way out to get to 8 am class, please don't go there. You loose automatically.  Just to be clear. I'm a DIII football fan and don't really care who goes on to be the next corporate schister. They come from all angles. The reference to DJ is so old. But if you must I am a Justin Beaver fan. Remember him Gagliardi Trophy winner and national champ. I gave props to your boy Elliott many times for his contributions. I also was a huge Collins and Shurlock fan as I was a Josh Richards fan. I am a Pierre Garcon fan and a list could go on.

According to the Iowa Corn Promotion Board & Iowa Corn Growers Association:

QuoteWhen I drive across Iowa , is all that corn I see really sweet corn?
Very little of the corn you see growing in Iowa is sweet corn. For example, Iowa farmers harvested 11.9 million acres of field corn in 2002 but only 4,876 acres of sweet corn, according to the U.S. Census of Agriculture.

QuoteHow is Iowa 's corn crop used?
Most of Iowa 's corn crop goes into animal feed. In livestock feeding, one bushel of corn converts to about 5.6 pounds of retail beef, 13 pounds of retail pork, 28 pounds of catfish, or 32 pounds of chicken. Iowa 's corn is also processed into starches, oil, sweeteners, and ethanol.

Wrong again, DutchFan, wrong again.

OxyBob

Bob read your own quotes there.  The first one says very little it does not say all and the second says most not all.  If you would look at how many acres there are of field corn yes there is a lot of field corn here in Iowa but it is not all field corn.  There is corn that is raised for corn oil for human use too.  When is says most it means most not all wrong again Bob wrong again Is that your Cali education that has taught you that very little and most means all?

Hmm, let's see. 11.9 million acres of field corn and 4,876 acres of sweet corn. That's a total of 11,904,876 acres. Let me employ some of my math skills:

4,876 ÷ 11,904,876  =  x ÷ 100
487,600 = 11,904,876 x
x = 0.040958

Iowa field corn = 99.95042%
Iowa sweet corn = 0.040958%

Yeah, you sure got me there, DutchFan.
