Heralded BHS senior plans to juggle football, baseball at Whittier

Anyone with half an eye on high school sports in Kern County knows Pete Mitchell has had himself a legendary year.

He's the kid that came out of nowhere to be the star quarterback, the Central Section football champion, the kicker of the title-winning field goal, the soccer and baseball captain, and the winner of two prestigious Kern County awards for athletes.

So, Pete, among all of those accolades and memories, where do you rank Wednesday's ceremony, at which you signed to play football and baseball at Whittier College?

"This is No. 1, it's got to be," Mitchell said. "I'm moving on to a new part of my life."

Mitchell — who wasn't even Bakersfield High's starting quarterback when fall camp began for football — led the Drillers to the title. He was The Californian's All-Area Player of the Year and then shined in soccer and baseball. In the past three weeks, he's won the Mayor's Award and the Tyack Award for being the best all-around athlete in Kern County.
...

Mitchell, who's a catcher in baseball, said he chose Whittier, a Division III school, because the coaches there were letting him play two sports.

"I decided that I wanted to still play football," Mitchell said. "If not, I would have gone to Westmont College or maybe Chapman, really good baseball schools."

"The real decider though,  is that I will get to be a teammate with LR"

Whittier's outgoing starting quarterback, Josh Scurlock, was a Stockdale graduate.

Not surprisingly, Mitchell shrugged off any concerns about juggling two sports and coursework for his pre-med degree (he wants to be an optometrist.)

"I've done it before," Mitchell said. "It's going to be tough, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

I think it's One bottle of "Corona" for every 3 dollars Bob. Either way, I may just need a couple of "Corona's"to help me decypher what the Heck this Arlanda P.A. relations person is trying to say. Ooops. I think i may have started a bit early.

Best Wishes, by the way, to Andy Collins this weekend as he makes his debute for the Stockton Lightning. Hope he makes a great first impression.  ;)

Understand that former CLU QB Danny Jones and QB for the D3 National Champion Wisconsin Whitewater Warhawks will be joining Josh in the Swedish league for the second half of the season playing with the Tyresö Royal Crowns. Great to see the guys on the same feild together again. Josh being the class act that he is could give DJ some pointers on the culture and hot spots for entertainment.  ;)
I know, here comes the so what comments and other stupid DJ remarks but let it go. Just a feel good story.

Former Whittier QB and Oxy nemesis Josh Scurlock is playing in Sweden for the Arlanda Jets. Here are some comments about Scurlock from the team's rather confusing web site.

Quote
Well it's the first weekend in May and time to kick-off the Superseries season. It looks to be an interesting year with two new teams joining the Super-Series in the Göteborg Marvels and the Northside Bulls. It is time for the Jets to kick off "home in May"-season. We will play 4 of our 6 home games in the month of May while we will play one in the middle of June and one on the last weekend of August.
...

Joshua Scurlock will be making his official debut in a Jets uniform and we are expecting good things from him. He has proven to be not just a good player, but a good decision maker over the course of this pre-season. As always on offense, our focus is to not have penalties and turnovers.

In week two we play Tyresö Royal Crowns in our second of four games at home in the month of May. Tyresö is coming off a game against perennial powerhouse Carlstad Crusaders. They lost but played a tight game against a good team for most of the four quarters. TRC is a team that has made a commitment to their youth program and it is actually beginning to pay its dividends. They have a good team and are young. That is something that some people may see as a problem, but I think, in time, it will pay off in wins. I just don't want it to start paying dividends this weekend.

Offensively, we got off to a good start and Joshua Scurlock did a good job in his first official game as a Jet. We were able to throw the ball successfully and with a few adjustments the running game got rolling a little better.

Week 3 finds us playing at home again and playing another young team that is making their Superseries debut. Last week we played a decent game against Tyresö Royal Crowns. We got off to a slow start but took control of the game and the end result was never really in doubt. Defense played well and offense started hitting on all gears. Josh Scurlock and company were able to move the ball and put points on the board.

Quote
Week number 4 finds us playing at home again and playing the defending national champion, Limhamn Griffins. There has been much said about who the Griffins have lost after their SM-Gold year, but without a doubt they are still a team that must be reckoned with in 2008. Any team that has Partick Lundqvist as a player and a coach on it will be good. It is as simple as that.

Offensively we are on a pretty solid roll. We have not faced a defense that could keep us out of the endzone yet this season. Scurlock and company are moving the ball and scoring points pretty much at will. This week will bring the toughest challenge so far this season. What we hope to do offensively is continue to build on the package and force defenses to defend more and more each week. Most importantly we hope to control the ball and score points. Almost all of the skill positions have scored, but leading the way in the points scored catagory is Joakim Carlsson who has scored 61 points in the last 3 games!! I guess that shows the advantage of being a solid WR and the teams kicker.
...

Probable Starters:
Offense
WR Nick Elman
WR Joacim Carlsson
WR Joseph Fardeman
WR Magnus Lagerborn
RB Andreas Fjäll
QB Joshua "Easy Money" Scurlock
OL August Ericsson
OL Marcus Hillerström
OL Björn Strandberg
OL Mattias Lind
OL Fabian Welderborn
...

Easy Money? Just what is the exchange rate of the krona to the dollar?

Don't get me started on Essey Rock, Holmes.

Look, before this gets out of hand, why don't we compromise and just agree that Stockton's not as bad as Whittier

or La Verne as of matter of fact. Some thing about those half empty foothills out there reminds of Stockton ;)

It could be worse, Collins could be in Fresno! :D

The Stockton Arena is a very nice venue. I've seen a few hockey games and an af2 game there. I may have to check out the Lightning again.

Come on, Fans, how many have been to Zillah,WA?

I predict a Collins blowup. They have no idea what is about to hit them. Just you're average Redlands fan thankful to see AC long gone in AF2 purgatory. I grew up in the area, maybe I should act as a tour guide? Nope! Have fun Oxy next year with that 14 point ass whoopin at the Runner. By the way AC you're in a boater's paradise! The Delta is a little kept secret from the Heathen from SoCal. Enjoy!!!!!!!

The Stockton Lightning added a tough-guy quarterback and a lineman on Thursday.

Andy Collins, 24, who also plays linebacker, and offensive lineman Taase Jennings will be in uniform when the Lightning (2-7) plays at Spokane (8-0) at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

2-7....oooH!
