OxyBob

Lucy and Ricky,

OB had to use the helicopter sound effect because he couldn't find one of Shoes being tied. :D

One's behavior in college, decisions to drink, etc. are a reflection of the character of the "kid / young adult", which stems from his upbringing and character (which is a result of his immediate and extended family, close family friends, and friends - although these, one could say are selected as a result of interests / values instilled in said "young adult" by the aforementioned characters). If a "young adult" is raised with an understanding of excess, and has been shown wise decision making by family and friends, then he will understand his limits, rarely exceed them and take responsibility for the times he does not. This is a generalization. However, this is something which, for the most part, holds true among all my close friends - even if their backgrounds are extremely conservative or extremely liberal - all have been raised to understand appropriate behavior and their limits.

95% of everyone drinks in college regardless of age. The problem is not the drinking age... so much as it is the teaching of appropriate behavior. If Billy's mommy and daddy pound a 6 pack apiece every night, then Billy is not being taugh appropriate behavior at home; if Suzie decides to sleep with another guy even while in a commited relationship, then Suzie needs new girlfriends and a new mommy to stop encouraging her to engage in such slutty behavior; so on and so forth. Junior running off to college and doing a coffee table of blow and 2 bottles of vodka in his first weekend is not the college's fault alone - it is his parents, his friends and the college's fault; but the blame should land first and foremost at home. Unfortunately, the vast majority of parents just aren't prepared or even more - involved in their kids' lives and working to set desireable examples. Go ahead and cast the stones on me folks, but truth be told, I've had this opinion ever since before college.... watching kids drink themselves through HS on their way to being townies. Does being an overprotective parent work? No... ha, hell no. Those parents are naive or just foolish. Which, is as poor preparation for a kid going off to college as a kid who observes his parents failing to engage in self-restraint.

Do we all cut loose? Yep! Is it ok? Yep. Is doing it every weekend necessary? Nope. Did I? Yes! Did I consume several thousand dollars of alcohol last weekend and still have a hangover on Monday afternoon? Yes. Was it foolish? Yes.
Point being, outside of my very rare occasion of stupidity - do my best to engage in behavior which is appropriate and responsible. And, I choose to surround myself with similar people.

I understand the concerns of parents. But, at the same time, if the kid has been raised well, he will be responsible. We cannot control those around us who continually make poor decisions. That is unfortunate, but true. But, at the end of the day, it is not the drinking age, etc that really matters.... but, I forget the origin of this (but I know it has some political connotations connected to it as of the last decade or so, but please, lets keep politics off of the board) - back on point - character matters.

I have no doubt that just about everyone here is someone of high character... so let's not worry about this issue. Let's worry about making sure we examples of appropriate behavior.

Ok, and forgive me if this fails to make sense, rambles, etc.
But, after 36 consecutive hours of work...... I'm not churning out my best material. fortunately, Excel is much easier to handle at 1am, than actual thought.

ECS,

I humbly beg to differ with your points about upbringing.  The apple does sometimes fall far from the tree.  How many preacher/pastors kids go astray after a strict conservative upbringing.  I know many young adults that have forsaken their parents way of life to make bad choice after bad choice.  People make their own decisions when they get out on their own.  I will state that the chances are much better if the parents have been good role models and have tried to show their kids a good path to choose.  Some people just can not make good decisions no matter how you try to drive it home to them.

Quick!  Someone get Kevin Bacon!  I feel a footloose and fancy free beat coming on.

How come no one ever says how many kids of hippie dope-heads go straight after a life of no responsibility and advanced narcotics education?  Like the daughter on Absolutely Fabulous.

(I agree otherwise, but a guy can't let that get in the way of an attempt at humor).

Point taken that also has to do with decisions.  Some times bad apples do not ruin the whole barrel.

Quotethe remodel came out nicely.

Did that remodel include an escalator to get up to the field by any chance?
It gets harder every year (for some people).

Unless Whittier has about 5 parking spots I would think you could roll in at about 1 minute before kickoff and still get a premo parking spot.   ;)

DAW

"don't sell us short, we have at least 20 parking spots" :D

Actually parking lot at the top of the hill fills up very early and the parking lot by the athletic center (bottom of the hill!!) is full come game time!!  If you want any chance to park at the top you would need to arrive at least 3 hrs before game time and even then the die hards are already there!!

Hey SCIAC and Tiger fans,
Here's some high lights about the the 2008 Tiger sqaud (via the Oxy athletics website) that will be ready to reclaim the SCIAC crown, the shoes and a ticket to the big dance in november.  Heres to a great season at the Rock.

Tigers Team Up for 2008 Football Season

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Aug. 22, 2008) – D.W. Patterson Field just got a lot more active as a squad full of eager student-athletes returned from summer break ready to play football. The Tigers reported on Monday and hit the field to prepare for their fast-approaching 2008 campaign.

The Occidental College football team finished the 2007 season with a 7-2  overall record, placing third in the SCIAC with a 4-2 mark. Dating back to 2004, Oxy has claimed three of the last four SCIAC championships, earning a bid to the NCAA national playoffs three consecutive years (2004, 05, 06). Oxy has earned four trips to the NCAA Elite 8 since 1983. Occidental has accumulated a 33-3 regular season record since 2004 with a 12-1 record at home since FieldTurf was installed on Patterson Field in 2005.

On offense, senior quarterback Justin Goltz (126.1 pass eff, 2056 yds, 57.4%, 18 TD, 12 INT in 2007), and senior First Team All-SCIAC running back Jason Haller (95.5 avg rush yds in six games as a starter in 2007) return to lead a potent attack that tallied up a conference best 36.6 points per game, 274.8 passing yards per game, and 173.7 rushing yards per game. The Tigers will have big shoes to fill with the graduation of All-West Region center Chris Kyles but will look to a solid offensive line, which boasts four returning senior players. Tom Gonzalez and Brett Henderson who both earned Second Team All-SCIAC recognition in 2007 will be joined by 2006 All-SCIAC selection Sam Emerson.

Occidental's defensive unit was hampered by injury in 2007 with the early season loss of two key players. Senior captain, inside linebacker, Anthony Ostland (2004 All-American, All-SCIAC 2004, 2005, 2006) suffered a season ending injury in week three versus CMS last year, but looks to return strong after taking a medical redshirt. In the season opener junior All-SCIAC (2006) defensive end Alex Wertheimer suffered a season ending injury but figures to spend a lot of time in the backfields of opposing offenses this season. Senior All-SCIAC safety Daniel Tromello, who led the SCIAC with six interceptions in 2007, and ranked 13th in Division III with 0.67 interceptions per game and 16th in passes defended (16), will anchor the secondary.

The special teams will be in good hands, as junior punter Alex Groh looks to improve on his Division III nation leading 2007 average of 45.9 yards per punt. Following the 2007 season Groh was honored as a First Team D3Football.com All-America, Second Team AP Little All-America, AFCA All-America, and the Gilburg Award Division III Punter of the Year. He was recently named a First Team pre-season All-American by D3Football.com.

Occidental will return 54 players, including 18 of 24 starters, and welcomes the additions of seven transfers and 29 freshmen to the squad, making the 90-man roster one of the largest in recent years.

The Tigers will open the season on September, 13, 2008 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. Occidental will play four home games in 2008.

If you can't make it out to the games, be sure to listen as Craig Duncan, Kevin Walsh and Tim Walsh bring you live play-by-play calls. Be sure to check out the Oxy football schedule for events with audio coverage.

Games to follow as the SCIAC conference promises to be competitive again include Oct. 11 (@ Redlands) and Nov. 1 (@ Cal Lutheran).
