According to the local rag up here, the Stags have a couple of transfers (Dalmau and Sevy) from the University of San Diego.

I can tell you from personal knowledge that Marshall Cook has done a lot of research for the script. :)

Being new to D3 football in general and the SCIAC in particular, I have been scouring this board and team and fan websites for the past couple of weeks to educate myself in anticipation of an enjoyable season of watching Oxy football.  More a fan of great defense than "Air Coryell" style offenses, I was distressed to see the huge number of points given up in the typical SCIAC contest last year (over 60 points given up by each defense in the Occidental-Whittier game ?!?).

So why all the points?  Is there an emphasis on the passing game over the run?  The stacking of talent on the offensive side of the ball?  The greater impact of "skill" players? What?

Alls I'm sayin'  is I am relieved Marshall Cook did not try to make that film about LINFIELD. Poor OXYCollins having to hear locker room chatter the rest of his career.

Interesting T'ton post about the NoCal players. Interesting in that none signed up for Menlo. What kind of a roster did Marin Catholic have and did they ever beat De La Salle? They had some ballers.

Oxy in the news, from The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette, Louisiana:

Quote
Stars in Acadiana: Andy Dick, others in town to film sports movie

Comedian and actor Andy Dick may soon be the city's newest resident. Since the star of Blonde Ambition, Employee of the Month and the TV sitcom NewsRadio has been in town Monday, he's fallen for the city's people, scenery and alligator sushi, although it gave him heartburn.

Dick finds Lafayette quieter and prettier than New Orleans and Shreveport, where he's done movies. The comedian has even started looking at houses here.
...

Dick will spend lots of time here for the filming of Division III, a sports comedy with a $2 million budget that will be filmed entirely in Lafayette. Dick, writer-director Marshall Cook and Blaine McManus of the Lafayette-based Maxim Entertainment production company outlined plans for the film at a news conference Wednesday at the City Club of Lafayette.

For two years, Cook played football at Occidental College, a private liberal arts college in Los Angeles. He quit to pursue an acting and filmmaking career.

Cook said Division III is loosely based on his football experiences. Dick plays the role of Coach Vice.

"It's where I found a lot of characters," said Cook. "I wouldn't say a lot of it's about me or my experiences so much.

"I found a lot of true characters in that world."
...

According to Oxy's football archives, Marshall Cook was on the 2000 roster as a freshman, but he's not listed on the 2001 roster. A Wikipedia entry about Cook says, "He quit football after the first two years in college to pursue acting and filmmaking." Maybe he was on the taxi squad in 2001.

OxyBob

Mr. Cook left after a tough QB battle between Paopao, Zuniga, and palacios. This definately was a tough choice for him at the time, but, both Zuniga and Paopao (who contributed and orchestrated the winning ways at  Oxy, may we not forget) were clearly the choice at the time. He did particapte in the 01' fall camp though. Best of Luck to Mr. Cook in his endeavors and hopefully getting all of d3football name recognition on the big screen.

With Andy Dick being involved playing a character named Coach Vice, I have zero expectations that this will be worth effort to go see.

During De La Salle's 151-game winning streak (1991-2004), DLS played Marin Catholic once and won 49-7.

OxyBob

That's correct.  MC would have been competitive with DLS maybe one or two years back in the 90s, but not since.  That 49-7 game was the year after MC's last truly excellent team, which included Travis LaBoy (Hawaii, Arizona Cardinals - the one current pro player), Alan Amundson (Oregon) and Nick Rolovich (Hawaii).  MC did win league titles in 03, 04 and 05 but the last two years they have underperformed.  Of the MC grads playing for the Stags, Sevy and Pautler are good players; don't know as much about Dalmau.

As to why they didn't consider Menlo, I have to say that Menlo simply has no visibility in Marin.  It's the only D3 school up here, has no local rivals, gets no coverage in the SF press, and - in my experience - does a lousy job recruiting.  (My wife heard a year ago from a former coach at the high school where she teaches that his son had been an assistant coach at Menlo and had really wanted our son to come to Menlo.  Yet, while I remember getting some bulk mail type letters from Menlo, they never even called.)

Welcome, Oxy Fan. What is your affiliation with Oxy football? Are you an alumnus? There are a few of us on here. Are you a parent of a player? There are some of those, too. Besides D3football, what other team and fan web sites have you been scouring?

A parent of a player.  Primarily D3football, but I have also scoured the individual school team sites as well as ncaafootball.com.

SCIAC teams run the gamut on offense and defense. Last season Oxy ranked 18th out of 231 D-III teams in total offense (448.4 ypg), and Redlands ranked 19th (441.6); at the other end Claremont ranked 178th (296.9). Redlands ranked 33rd in total defense (280.5), while Whittier ranked 219th (457.4). Some good, some bad, like most conferences.

Well . . . in a comparison with a nearby conference, the NWC, the SCIAC does not fare so well.  Just looking at the six conference games, the NWC has three teams with defenses that allowed less than 100 points, the SCIAC has none.

Can you really draw conclusions from this?  Those teams are playing each other and the bottom of the NWC is not really very strong.  The bottom team only scored 69 points total.  That will bring the point total down if you play teams that can not score.

The Northwest Conference?! Hahahahahaha! Those lightweights couldn't even get a team into the playoffs last season. Their conference "champion" was worked by Redlands.

Bob,

I would say "Wait till Linfield plays [enter SCIAC school] this year then you'll see the difference" but we already know that SCIAC schools refuse to play Linfield.

DutchFan . . . your points are well taken but I think the comparison is still valid.  My sense is that SCIAC teams favor more potent offenses while NWC teams emphasize defense more.
