Are you referring to WC11's casting about for SCIAC games with Linfield? :P

Oxy Fan - This is my 4th year observing the SCIAC, and I've only seen a couple of other DIII games in the Midwest, but in general, I think the SCIAC offenses are pretty wide open.  As OxyBob noted, Oxy ranked 18th in the country last year in total offense, and they have most of their offensive starters returning this year.  That is fun to watch, but the defense giving up big plays (as they seem to have done since 2005) isn't....

I was referring to another OXYBob lurking on the WWW and, my mistake, it's speedway racing

– not fishing derby.

Interesting T'ton post about the NoCal players. Interesting in that none signed up for Menlo. What kind of a roster did Marin Catholic have and did they ever beat De La Salle? They had some ballers.

During De La Salle's 151-game winning streak (1991-2004), DLS played Marin Catholic once and won 49-7.

OxyBob

That's correct.  MC would have been competitive with DLS maybe one or two years back in the 90s, but not since.  That 49-7 game was the year after MC's last truly excellent team, which included Travis LaBoy (Hawaii, Arizona Cardinals - the one current pro player), Alan Amundson (Oregon) and Nick Rolovich (Hawaii).  MC did win league titles in 03, 04 and 05 but the last two years they have underperformed.  Of the MC grads playing for the Stags, Sevy and Pautler are good players; don't know as much about Dalmau.

As to why they didn't consider Menlo, I have to say that Menlo simply has no visibility in Marin.  It's the only D3 school up here, has no local rivals, gets no coverage in the SF press, and - in my experience - does a lousy job recruiting.  (My wife heard a year ago from a former coach at the high school where she teaches that his son had been an assistant coach at Menlo and had really wanted our son to come to Menlo.  Yet, while I remember getting some bulk mail type letters from Menlo, they never even called.)

the 49-7 game was in 00, DLS was scheduled to play against them following year in 01 but Marin had to forfeit..  ::)
I think that team had Khalid Bell of UCLA too.

Can you really draw conclusions from this?  Those teams are playing each other and the bottom of the NWC is not really very strong.  The bottom team only scored 69 points total.  That will bring the point total down if you play teams that can not score.

DutchFan . . . your points are well taken but I think the comparison is still valid.  My sense is that SCIAC teams favor more potent offenses while NWC teams emphasize defense more.

That could be true.  But you don't win if you don't score. ;D ;D ;D

On the other hand, if you're playing teams with crappy defense, won't your offensive stats be inflated?  A better comparison might be to look at the stat of the games between NWC and SCIAC teams last season (e.g. exclude interconference games).  If i didn't miss anything, the two conferences had a total of 9 matchups last year.  The NWC won 6 of the 9.  Despite that, the SCIAC actually outscored the NWC 199-183 but that would average less than 2 points per game.  Nobody in the SCIAC played Linfield (as we all know) which was the NWC's top offense (points per game wise) but all other teams in both conferences were represented.  The most points scored in the game was by Oxy (52 vs. Lewis and Clark who gave up an average of 55 points per game) and the next most was 48 by PLU vs Cal LU (who gave up an average of 25 points per game).  I could go on and on but what these stats seem to say is that when you compare these two conferences against each other, they balanced out fairly even from an offense/defense perspective.  Obviously you can interpret stats lots of ways but I think you can argue that both conferences have teams that can play strong offense, strong defense and in some cases both.  I apologize for the long post but I'm pumped up for the start of the season which is why I made my way over the SCIAC board for the first time in a while (well that and RFB's obsessive posts about a certain Linfield QB from a few years back on the NWC board).  Happy season too you all!

Oxy fans if you haven't already seen this, it'll pump you up.
I enjoyed the Duke confession on page four that they suck at football.

Duke has always been a basketball school.

OxyBob
If I recall correctly, weren't they (the football team) the team that was judged not good enough to be held to a contract they had with another big name football school?  I'm certain Bob will have an article pulled up momentarily.  Just more proof!

Yikes, you're right about the game being in '00.  However, while MC may have cancelled a game against DLS in 01 (I've always thought it was a one and done, not a series) it was not a forfeit.  And Kahlil Bell only played at MC for two years, in 03 and 04, so he never had any chance to play against DLS.

Say it ain't so.... Oswald won't disappear into Oxy lore, I'll be sure of that.

Sorry old school'ers.  If Linfield ever replaces our jaunty sailor cap Wildcat I may try to burn down the campus.  Leave our jaunty sailor cap Wildcat alone!
Maybe Linfield should get this animal as it's new mascat.  Than when Maynard calls looking for a game, they will be twice as likely to hear the phone ring. ;D

Gray,

That is an alternate mascot when our standard Wildcat can't make it out to the games.

Meet Radar.

Oxy fans,

Since I was screwing around with Mascot sailor caps I figure that I would give your new mascot a touch of old.
