Since there is no longer an Independent Teams board in the west region, I thought I would post what I saw of Chapman today. Since all the SCIAC teams will play them

Chapman is a pretty good team. Very quick and they easily out played the bigger and slower Menlo team. QB Eric Marty looked good, making good reads and often hitting his second and third reciever. RB Mike Christensen had 108 yds rushing. Wide reciever Chris Langstaff impressed me too. He had 4 catches for 93 yards running good patterns. He also likes to hit rather than be run out of bounds, he turned, droppede a shoulder and layed a lick on a Menlo DB. He also had a nice return of the second half kick off. Looks like they may be a fun team to watch this year.

Game pics from the Menlo - Chapman game have been posted.

Nice pics. You do a very good job.

Good opening win for the Dawgs. Should be an interesting game next week against the Rats.

I was impressed with Redland's performance.  If they play like that next week they should role over Whitworth.  The Rats D is not nearly as good as the last two years.  If you can stop their running game then you should be fine.  Then again, it was their first game yesterday so perhaps they'll make adjustments and avenge last year's loss....

Looked like a typical 1st game for two teams....Whitworth did have 400 yards of offense, but didn't convert on a few 4th downs that were kind of in no man's land.  6 sacks by the defense that looked very fast.  2 picks by Kemp led directly to short scores for ULV. Overall the stats show the game wasn't close.  I predict a 28-21 win next week over Redlands.

Poets 44 Panthers 6.  It was a VERY long game.  Pulled most of the starters in the first qtr.  All were gone by the 3rd.  By the 4th qtr 8 of the 11 poet players were Freshman!!  It was good to see alot our Freshmen guys get some playing time.  LR was in the 1st qtr (not Long) just long enough to get half a sack and a couple tackles when Coach told him he was done!! In the 4th qtr Hammer asked if there were any defensive players that hadn't played yet... LR raised his hand hoping to get back in :D ;D  I did feel bad for the Panthers.  looking at the roster they had 23 players compared to the 98 on ours.!!

From the Oxy Website:

COLORADO SPRINGS, Calif. (Sept. 13, 2008) – On a gorgeous sunny day at 6011 feet above sea level the Occidental College Tigers football squad opened the 2008 season with a 41-0 shutout against Colorado College at Washburn Field today.

Colorado College won the coin toss and opted to receive, giving freshman Joshua Mun the first kick off of his collegiate career. The first possession of the game didn't last long as the Oxy defense stopped CC quickly (allowing just three yards) giving Oxy their first offensive opportunity of 2008.

There was no lack of scoring for the Tigers, who never looked back after senior quarterback Justin Goltz ran the ball 60 yards on the first offensive play of the game. Sophomore running back Bryan Fioritto finished off the drive with a two yard rush into the end zone for the first touchdown of the season.

Goltz connected with Jason Lehman for a 27 yard completion on the ensuing Tigers possession before Lehman ran the final five yards into the end zone for the second score of the game.

With just seven seconds remaining in the first quarter, Goltz found sophomore transfer Brandon Ahlo for a 28 yard completion and the third touchdown of the day on the Tigers' third offensive drive.

Saunders took over after Goltz was shaken up on a quarterback keep during the Tigers'  first offensive sequence of the second quarter and completed 12 and 13 yard touchdown passes to junior wide receivers Chris Washington and Lehman, respectively giving Oxy a commanding 34-0 lead going into the locker room.

Occidental's defense was solid in the first half behind leadership from Jim Hildensperger and Kyle Spaulding who each tallied five unassisted tackles and three assists. Patrick Sarkissian finished the half with three solo stops and four assists.

Senior defensive back Daniel Tromello recovered a CC fumble, forced by Sarkissian, and returned the ball 48 yards to set up the final score of the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Occidental managed to add another touchdown in the final minutes of the game behind a seven yard charge into the end zone by freshman running back Jonathan Kirchner.

Despite a valiant last minute effort by the CC Tigers who drove 69 yards down the field in 11 plays, their threat was put to an end by the only Oxy sack of the day by freshman Greg Holsworth for a loss of 10 yards.

The Oxy's kickers turned in a good performance overall as kicker, Neil Martin, converted five of six PAT attempts. Punter Alex Groh averaged 31.0 yards with two punts inside the 20 yard line in five attempts. Mun averaged 61.4 yards per kickoff, finishing with 430 total yards in seven kicks during his first game as a Tiger.

Hildensperger finished with nine total tackles (five solo stops and four assists) on opening day. Spaulding and Sarkissian each finished with eight total tackles. Zac Perkins tallied seven while Mike McGarry and Josh Beck added five apiece (each recordings two unassisted tackles).

Offensively Goltz racked up 179 all purpose yards with 70 yards on the ground and 9-12 through the air for 109 yards and one touchdown in limited action. Saunders was 10-14 passing for 92 yards with a pair of touchdowns adding 32 rushing yards in five attempts. His longest run was a 27 yard gain in the final offensive series of the game, which ended with a TD. Neither Oxy quarterback threw an interception in the game, but Saunders was sacked once for a loss of seven yards. .

Rushing Fioritto and Kirchner each carried the ball eight times for 65 and 37 yards, respectively. Lehman finished with three catches for 29 yards and five yards on the ground, resulting in a pair of TDs. Washington caught 10 passes for 62 yards with his longest at 19 yards.

Appearing for the first time in black and orange were a number of freshmen including Randall Hook (four carries, 13 yards), Nick Saraceni (six carries, 21 yards; one solo tackle, two assists), Jordan Washington (two carries, 14 yards; three catches, 37 yards), Ayerton Bates (one solo tackle, one assist, broke up a play), Tyler Natfz (one solo tackle), Tucker Eason (one rush, two yards), Nic Arnold (one solo tackle, one assist), Greg Fryan (one solo tackle, one assist) and John Hansborough (one assist).

Occidental as a team picked up 23 first downs and totaled 460 offensive yards (259 rushing, 201 passing). They were 9-14 on third down conversions and were a perfect 5-5 in the red zone. CC finished with just 238 yards of total offense and were 2-5 on fourth down conversions while going 0-2 in the red zone.

Today marks the ninth victory, in as many meetings, over Colorado College since 1999.

The Tigers return to the friendly confines of D. W. Patterson Field for their home season opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Menlo in their final non-conference game of 2008. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Sabretooth,
There is a scoop here somewhere that Chapman has joined the SCIAC. ::)
When will they ever learn?

I saw that . . . figured within the context of the otherwise very well written article, small error probably due to lack of attention rather than an affirmative misunderstanding.

So within the context of the article and the current vast volume of mendacity to which we are being exposed every day by one of the presidential campaigns . . . I figured no real harm done.

"Interesting" mention of a SCIAC school here

I am also a little surprised the Oxy article didn't state anything about playing on turf, or flying East, or playing in the mountains, or any other obscure statistic they could scrape up.

Look like Redlands played well, CLU needs stickier gloves, Oxy did what thye should have, Whittier did to Principia what the rest of the SCIAC will do to them, Claremont beat L&C....who cares besides ECS, Pomona did something, I cant remember, ULV only lost by a few but still lost.  Hope there were no injuries.

Had a great time out in Colorado Springs watching my first Oxy football game.  Oxy was well represented in the stands with quite a few parents and students making the trip, as well as a sizable contingent of local alum.  My initial impressions:

No real superstars on O or D (except for maybe Goltz).  Just well coached, well executed, disciplined football.  For an example of the coaching, you did not have to look further than the first offensive play for each side.  Considering that you have all summer to work on your first play of the season, CC opened with a uninspiring fullback dive for little or no gain.  In contrast, Oxy appeared to open with the same dive, but did a well executed fake instead which resulted in Goltz sneaking out the backside and scampering downfield for 60 yards.

As far as the defense, I have to take back my first post a few weeks ago about "where's the defense."  Even factoring in the strength of the opponent, Oxy played some inspired defense.  Considering that CC mostly ran a triple option that was usually able to gain 3 or 4 yards a down, plus the fact that in the second half CC was in 4 down territory on every drive past their own 40, Oxy did very well to keep CC out of the end zone and off the scoreboard.

Hard to be a superstar on defense against the Wing T.  It's about filling your gap and making the tackle when the play comes to you.  Makes for boring football.  The defense will shine in the home opener against Menlo.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Well done Stags. Always important to kick the season off with a win.  Good to see a healthy DJ contributing to the offense. Defense played well against the run and forced 6 turnovers. Solid start for Ashton and his unit. Important now to not take a step back from game 1. As a player, and especially if you are inexperienced, it is easy to take your foot off the gas for game 1. I'm sure the seniors will have the team looking forward and not backwards. Looks like some of the 2nd teamers and freshmen were able to get into the game as well. Another important thing - getting game experience early on into your college career. Wide-eyed players at crunchtime isn't always helpful.
UPS - will, as always be a challange. For some reason CMS struggles at times with UPS. Not necessarily playing poorly, just not always 4 quarters of football. In my two games, it was just one play here, one play there. Hopefully that can be fixed and everyone is both physically and mentally ready to go on Saturday.

Hey, I saw a guy wearing a "Fear the Poet" T-Shirt a couple of weekends ago?  What's the story behind the phrase?  They sure don't seem to be a team to fear much...
