Honest question:

What is the reasoning behind limiting SCIAC schools to 9 games?

I have no idea what the history is behind the rule, but I'll guess it has to do with costs/resources and academics.  My recollection is that any change would require an agreement by all (or majority?) of the member school's presidents and athletic directors.  Given the costs of a 10th game from a limited resource view . . . and from a Title IX analysis . . . my personal view is that we'll not be seeing a 10th game in SCIAC land anytime in the foreseeable future.

Pomona head coach Roger Caron was his usual wry self while describing the Sagehens' defensive effort against Lewis & Clark, in this item from the San Bernardino Sun:

Quote
Pomona-Pitzer picked up its first win, beating Lewis & Clark 62-25 in a game coach Roger Caron said was closer than the score indicates. The Sagehens (1-1) only led 28-21 at the half and 35-28 late in the third quarter.

Sophomore quarterback Jacob Caron threw ran for 126 yards and five touchdowns and threw for 315 and two others. The coach said he didn't know off hand but would check to see what school records his son bested.

While the offensive performance was encouraging, the defensive effort was not. Fortunately he has an extra week to work on it with the Sagehens having a bye this week.

"I am definitely concerned," the coach said. "We have a tough time matching up with anyone physically, but we can't be mentally deficient too."

Going out on a limb.. I would wager that with a 62-25 score, Caron is interested in boosting his kid's stats.... laying it on that much in the 4th quarter once you have a lead is a dick move. If the 2nd teamers are scoring at will, that's fine, can't fault a kid for trying. But if your 1st teamers are going for broke w/ a large lead - poor sportsmanship (and this is from someone who doesn't really believe in sportsmanship to begin with) ...just a guess.....

RFB,
I was looking back over some old stuff and found this.  Thought you might find this interesting.

This is portion of a post I made on Sept. 13, 2005.

"I thought the most impressive Redlands guy was Selway. This kid looks to have a big upside, good size, speed and hands but probably figures to be QB for the next 3 years."

Guess I got one right.

Redlands is a strong team this year. I look for them to do big things.

D O.C.

I believe he wasn't the 3 year Qb you predicted because Redlands was platooning Qbs there for awhile and I believe that stirred RFB a tad.

While I agree with this in theory I do have a question.  Does PP even have a second team offense?  They had one other QB listed who is a freshmen and their kicker.

If that is the case, then I am right in my assessment.

Only thing I can think is those final two passes could have been done without.

-- L&C kicked off. Likely an onside kick because the ball went 10 yards and out of bounds at the L&C 40. Caron threw a 33-yard TD pass and Pomona led 56-35 at 7:11.

I wouldn't begrudge this with 7:11 left and following a L&C TD and onside kick.

maybe passing for the last TD was a little much....but c'mon when else is PP going to get a chance to win big (or win at all?)

ECS . . . it was 62-35, not 62-25.

And don't let the "62" frame the debate . . . would anyone give "27-0" a second thought?

Oh, please, it was a 5-yard TD pass after a 2-yard loss. Heck, L&C came right back and tried a 41-yard FG with 42 seconds to go.

In the past 5 years, Lewis & Clark has given up 40+ points 7 times, 50+ 7 times, 60+ 5 times, and 70+ 3 times. Face it, the Pioneers are simply terrible and give up tons of points. And what a joke for a Linfield fan to have anything to say about it. After all, Linfield always goes easy on Lewis & Clark:

1997 Linfield 49, Lewis & Clark 0
1998 Linfield 52, Lewis & Clark 7
1999 Linfield 65, Lewis & Clark 10
2000 Linfield 61, Lewis & Clark 20
2001 Linfield 63, Lewis & Clark 20
2002 Linfield 49, Lewis & Clark 0
2003 Linfield 55, Lewis & Clark 0
2004 Linfield 62, Lewis & Clark 7
2006 Linfield 40, Lewis & Clark 0
2007 Linfield 66, Lewis & Clark 0

OB, I attended the last 2 Linfield - L&C games. Starters done after the first quarter. All 100+ kids play. Heck, last year Linfiled had a penalty for having two kids on the field at the same time with the same number. ;D I do not remember the Cats passing in the second half. Do you tell the third and fourth teamers to not score?

Well, isn't Linfield just wonderful?

And now back to the subject: EastCoastStag said Pomona ran up the score on Lewis & Clark. They didn't.

OxyBob

I agree with you on both statements.

"Starters done after the first quarter." Yeah, that's why starting QB Trevor Scharer was still in there in the 3rd quarter throwing TD passes against L&C last year.

That was 2006.  Scharer didn't play last year vs L&C (injury).  Boehme started in the 07 game.

Dude,

You are in serious need of some help . . . the first step is admit that you have a problem . . .

"Hi, my name is OB . . . and I'm a Div.III Sportstriviainternetboardsoholic"
;) ;D

cawcdad

WC11 beat me to it.
In 2007 the Cats scored twice in the second half. A pass by the #3 QB and a punt return. Boehme did play the entire first half. He got the start because Scharer was hurt. So the #2 all season played a half then #3 plays 2nd half.
