Glad to see my first SCIAC action of the season last night down at Whittier.  Came away very impressed with the CLU defense, which looked good throughout the game.  The CLU offense looked good at times, especially the two TD drives in the first half, but struggled a bit at others, in no small part because of the Whittier defense, which played very well in the second half.  Whittier clearly needs to get more happening on the offensive side of the ball.  Their QB seems like a gutsy kid, but the protection is not always there - and his lack of stature makes it difficult for them to throw the ball over the middle of the field.  They'll be a much more formidable opponent if they can get something going offensively.

Overall I was glad to see a solid effort by the Kingsmen, and hope it bodes well for the rest of the season.  The new field looks great, and it was very nice to meet FTP and DAW.  :)

Thank You all for keeping the board updated with yesterday's SCIAC football action. And of course, Congrats to the Tigers, Kingsmen, Pups and heck even the one day to be in the future SCIAC school Chapmen for their big victories.
Never got the chance to check the scores until this morning (to much victory celebrations for my Dodgers all across town that I had to attend) and was glad to see the reports.

Can't wait to hear all the smack talk from the Puppy nation this week. This week is one heck of a Big step for the Tigers in their quest to reclaim the SCIAC title and can only hope that the Men in orange and black concentrate in making this a great week of practice and film study.  GO Tigers.

Tigers Tear Past Stags

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2008) – A two week hiatus helped the Tigers recover and regroup for their conference opener, a game in which they shut out the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 38-0, for the first time in 20 years en route to their third win of the season to remain undefeated.

Occidental College amassed 440 yards of total offense, while the defense held the CMS offense to just 212 total yards.

Oxy scored early and often to take a 21-0 lead at halftime before tacking on 17 additional points in the second half, while the defense stepped up, accounting for four sacks for a loss of 29 yards.

The Tigers won the toss and opted to receive, marking the only kickoff CMS would see in the game. Chris Washington got things started with an 18-yard return to set up a five play, 70-yard drive that included a 3-for-3 effort and a 25-yard run by senior quarterback Justin Goltz. Washington caught two passes for 31 yards, the second a 20-yard touchdown pass just over two minutes into the game.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' first possession ended with senior defensive back JD Ciasulli batting the ball down after Jim Hildensperger brought pressure, hurrying Stags quarterback Ryan Larsen.

On the ensuing Oxy possession Goltz again led the Tigers down the field finding three different receivers (C. Washington, Jordan Inabnit and Jordan Washington), adding a 36-yard rush to set up a Bryan Fiorito three-yard rushing TD capped off again by a PAT from Neil Martin to put the Tigers up 14-0 as time expired in the first quarter of action.

The first half scoring ended with an acrobatic leap into the end zone by Goltz after an 11-yard run. Oxy used 14 plays to travel 89 yards down the field for the score. Both C. Washington and Jason Lehman caught a pair of passes while Goltz also connected with Inabnit for an eight yard completion.

Despite the Tigers holding possession of the ball for just 3:30 in the third quarter, they managed to post two more touchdowns.

The first was all thanks to the fleet footedness of senior running back Jason Haller who looked to be in fine form during his first appearance in black and orange this season following a string of injuries. He carried the ball four times, with three double-digit gains (18, 29 and 21 yards) picking up 75 total yards on the drive.

A tough Oxy defense forced CMS to punt the ball again. C. Washington gave the Tigers good field possession with a 15-yard return to the 50-yard line, setting the team up for a four-play drive that lasted just 1:44 and resulted in Fiorito's second touchdown run of the game on a one-yard rush.

Sophomore Connor Smith got the first field goal attempt of his collegiate career and nailed a 25-yard kick to give the Tigers their final three point of the game.

Defensively, senior Anthony Ostland led all players with five solo stops as he tallied 9.0 total tackles while adding a huge sack for a loss of eight yards as he leveled Larsen early in the third quarter. Kyle Spaulding and Alex Ochoa each had a sack, pushing back the CMS offense back eight and ten yards, respectively. Freshman Kevin May and junior Jesse Fischer combined for the fourth Oxy sack of the game.

Junior Patrick Sarkissian was responsible for 8.0 total tackles, one for a loss and broke up a play while Hildensperger and Daniel Tromello each finished with 5.0 total tackles in the game. Freshman Nate Sullivan was a nuisance in his first SCIAC game, making four solo stops. Spaulding also broke up a pair of plays.

Overall Oxy had two players with more than 100 all-purpose yards as Haller led all Tigers with 108 and C. Washington added 105. Lehman caught five passes for 85 yards while junior quarterback Scott Saunders connected with Neil Gordon three times for 47 yards, including a 25-yard completion, in the fourth quarter.

The Tiger QBs combined to go 18-for-23 without being picked off. Goltz was 14-for-18 for 162 yards (including a game-high 38-yard completion to Lehman) and one touchdown, adding another by foot, while Saunders was 4-for-5 passing.

Oxy's offensive game was on today as they converted their only fourth down chance and were 4-for-4 in the red zone after picking up 26 first downs. The Tigers ball carriers averaged 8.3 yards per play, 12.0 yards per completion and 7.5 yards per rush.

Joshua Mun again did the kicking for the Tigers, sending the ball deep in all seven of his kickoff chances. Senior punter Alex Groh booted the ball 47.0 yards, inside the 20, on his only opportunity.

Occidental improves to 3-0 on the season, notching their first SCIAC win of the season to sit atop the conference standings with the University of Redlands (3-0 overall) and Cal Lutheran University (2-1 overall).

Next week the Tigers will travel to Redlands to play the Bulldogs who are currently ranked # 17 by the National Football Coaches Association and # 20 by D3football.com. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.

RFB

"The win did not come without a cost, as the Bulldogs lost two defensive linemen with what Maynard said are season-ending injuries. Noseguard Mitchell Crocco tore an ACL in his right knee in the second quarter while end Josh Cunningham sustained a broken ankle." From the San Bernardino Sun

Redlands lost two defensive starters to season ending injuries. This will hurt the defense but a great opportunity for their backups to show what they can do. Big game next weekend.

Jack Parkman

Thats too bad about Redlands losing guys the week before the showdown with Oxy.  It sounds like Oxy has a pretty explosive "O" and Redlands has a solid "D" (although any defense will look good agains ULV).  Shoudl be a pretty exciting game.

What a great week to Be an Oxy Tiger/ Tigers Fan.

It's that time of the year in which the Men in Orange and black are told over and over again on how important this game is. After learning about the number of injuries to the Pups, I am sure the Coaching staff at Oxy will do it best to expose the young pups who are filliing in for those that are injured. Look for young Pup Q.B. Steve Smith to be nervous has heck once the Tiger D starts putting pressure on him.
Not only that, watch the Oxy o-line do its best against the replacements at Nose and end. Can't wait to hear how many times Oxy may run to those specific sites.

Go Tigers and of course.... Go Dodgers.

Lol. Hahaha. I know. Your Poets need to find a way to rebound fast. Like the Angels, they need to improve the small things that caused them to have these problems the last two weeks.

By the way, thats twice that i've been able to witness my dodgers win a series in my life time. When the halo's get eliminated, our boy Mike can come over and celebrate. Of course secertly you know he's rooting for his real  ball club. Once a dodger, always a dodger.

In honor of my fathers memory, I hope the Dodgers reach the Series only to be humiliated by the AL rep.  You see my father was born and raised in Brooklyn and the Dodgers died in 57.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that my dodgers had to leave Brooklyn and be the Pioneers in MLB to head west to open a new market. With this sacrifice, I am sure Walter O. and the family just wanted the best for their fans and for the future. And for that I thank them.

Back to SCIAC football. Oxy takes this game away from the Pups by two scores.

Two scores? Really? I guess they're going to outscore an offense that averages 450 yards of offense by two touchdowns? And they're going to do it on a defense that has given up 6 net rushing yards over three games? Oxy isn't playing CC or CMS this week.

Dan Selway isn't playing Oxy this week.

OxyBob

That is true. Steve Smith doesn't need to be Dan Selway with Redlands running game.

and don't forget that they stole land to build chavez latrine. The dodgers are carpetbaggers and should go home to Brooklyn and leave this area to the real home team..the Angels who where in LA long before Brooklyn.

I know...the tradition of the dodgers. They win their first playoff series in 20 years and they are the ones with tradition?
