My two cents:

Who the hell schedules Redlands for a HC game?  I PP or ULV was everyone's homecoming game this year (though query who the visitor in the ULV-PP matchup would choose).

I think Oxy is due for a letdown.  Plus, the injury to Haller may stall Oxy's chances.  Haller came in averaging 15 yards a carry (albeit in one game against CMS) but INCREASED his avg in the UOR game.

Oxy has given up fewer points in these first four games than they did in their final game last season.

I didn't think Maynard's decision to go for it on 4th down in the 1st Q was a bad one -- it just didn't work out.  Asking a D-III kicker to kick a 40-yarder is asking a lot.  I would only try that long a FG at this level if it was 4th and 6 or more.

What the..... Please tell me I didn't read the following sentence about the Tigers above in your last Post TigerSports. I'm hoping that it maybe just be me still hung over after last nights big dodger loss, but, what in the heck did the voice of the Tigers just say on this board.
Regardless of any injury, I would expect that the Voice of the Tigers would be hoping and rooting for Tigers in their quest of making it all the way in the SCIAC. I just find it odd that the Announcer of my school would just plain out put say this about my Tigers on the SCIAC. What a great supporter.  ??? I just hope the Men in Orange and Black don't read this, as I am sure they will be delighted in knowing that their annoucer has some doubts about them reaching and staying at the top of the SCIAC.      ???

Thanks for the clearification on the rules guys. However, I am sure this topic has now been hammer down and taken care of. Plus, the game between the Tigers and Pups is offically in the Bank.

Not so fast, Browneagle...

I sent an e-mail to the Southern California Collegiate Football Officials Association:

Dear Sirs:

I have a question about a game situation which occurred in the Occidental-Redlands game this past Saturday.

Situation:

Oxy had the ball, 4th and 7, on its own 3. Oxy punt was blocked, ball downed at the 16. Oxy flagged for holding in the end zone, Redlands awarded a safety.

Question: Was the safety "automatic" because there was holding in the end zone, or did Redlands have the option to decline the penalty and take the ball at the 16?

Thanks for your reply,

[OxyBob]

I received the following reply:

Quote
[OxyBob],

On the play you described, the assumption is the ball was touched by the defenders at or behind the line of scrimmage, that the defenders did not commit a foul during the down and that the down ended with the defenders in position of the ball, then;

Under NCAA rules when the offense commits a foul behind its goal line the enforcement of the penalty results in a safety. The defense has the option to decline the foul, take the 2 points off the scoreboard and take the result of the play.

Thank you for your interest in the rules.

SCCFOA

That being the case, why oh why did Redlands take the safety and 2 pts and give Oxy a free kick, rather than decline the penalty and take the ball at the 16 where it was downed and go for 6 pts or 3 pts? This is even more mystifying in view of UR head coach Mike Maynard's quote in the San Bernardino County Sun:

Quote
[Maynard] was also second-guessing a call he made to go for a first down with a fourth-and-3 at the Occidental 23 on the Bulldogs' first possession with the game still scoreless. Schafer was stopped for no gain. Meanwhile, kicker Joe MacMillan is a solid 5-of-7 on field goal tries with a long of 44 yards.

"I'd like to have that one back," he said. "I just thought we had a really good play. Obviously looking back on that now it would have been better to get some points."

So let me get this straight: Maynard second-guessed himself for not kicking a field goal when he was tied in the first quarter, but he didn't go for a field goal (or a TD) and instead took 2 pts when he was down 7 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Someone explain that logic to me.

Why didn't Redlands use time-outs at the end of the game?

The only answer I can come up with is that the coaching staff quit on the team.  The team played hard until the end - but the coaches seemed to throw in the towel.  If the coaches had thought Redlands could win, they would not have had the team punt the ball on its last possession, but instead would have used all four downs to try to score.

Anything can happen at the end of a football game.  Two scores is not impossible - unless you take the ball out of your team's hands

OTW asks a good question. Myron Cope wonders the same thing...

Look for the Oxy DB's to be tested against the Panthers "Pass happy" offense.

Through 4 games, Chapman's offense has been balanced. The Panthers are averaging 380 yards per game, 180 rushing and 200 passing. So far Oxy is averaging 442 yards per game, 238 rushing and 204 rushing.

OxyBob

OxyBob you are looking at things through hind site.  What would your question be if Redlands had declined the penalty taken the ball on the 16 and fumbled the next play? Redlands would have given up 2 points and been a full TD down at that point.

The coaching staff and athletic department rarely has control over who the opponent is for Homecoming, actually. Conference games are typically scheduled by the conference and Homecoming is typically scheduled by the alumni office.

From what I've seen, the conversation is typically, "is the football team playing at home on Oct. 11 in 2010?" And that's how it ends up that way.

I would have asked, "When did Redlands develop a case of the dropsies?"

For reference: UR is averaging 1.75 fumbles per game - Losing .5 per game
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

EastCoastStag

Totally swamped for the last 2 weeks and haven't even been able to read the board, let alone post.

Tough loss to OXY for the Stags.. now, on the heels of the OXY win over Redlands, it is safe to say OXY is much stronger than might have previously been thought.
Good win by the Stags over ULV on Sat night. Strong performance all around from special teams, defense and offense. Much needed win, especially since we have struggled with ULV at times over the last several years. Well done. Hopefully things will continue on the upswing.

Finally, a thanks to FTP and DAW. Had a great time watching the game with you guys at Menlo. Best of luck the rest of the year and hopefully see you guys for the CMS game.

Congrats to Oxy hitting the D3 top 25 at # 24 . . . and to the Wildcats at #25. Rounding out the Pacific coast, Willammette at #19.  Bearcats, Tigers and Wildcats . . . oh my.

As for "Oxy being due for a letdown" . . . here's my optimistic take . . . boatload of seniors who know this is their last chance, most of the rest of the team understanding that graduation hits them big this year . . . AND . . . . they all remember Whittier last year . . .

They know better, they won't let it happen . . .

Let's not forget the Bulldogs are still lurking at #31.  We'll need a bit of luck, but we still have a chance at two teams in at the end of the year.

Agree with you there Tooth.  Oxy knows what's on the line and will be working just as hard this week as last.  Redlands is underlined on the calendar every year, but if the team let's down now, last weeks win is meaningless.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Interesting scenario:

Oxy goes 9-0 Pool A
Redlands wins out 8-1 Pool B
Linfield beats Willamette to finish 8-1 Pool A
Willamette wins out to finish 9-1 Pool B

Who would have a better chance of gettng two teams in?
