Yes

Quote from: Sabretooth Tiger on October 16, 2008, 07:21:07 PMHard to see how an season opening loss can be a letdown.
When you rattle off 10 wins behind it, it's a let down.  The Tigers beat far better teams than Chapman that year.

Quote from: Sabretooth Tiger on October 16, 2008, 07:21:07 PMFrankly, I don't see the Whittier loss last year as a "letdown" so much as a defensive clusterf***.
Yeah that might be a better term.
Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Interesting games in the conference this weekend:

Chapman seemed like a team on the rise last season, I'll be interested to see how much of a game they give the Tigers.

Cal Lu has a chance to demonstrate that they are a strong team that continues to improve, especially against a CMS team that has often given them trouble, especially the last time the Kingsmen ventured out to Claremont.

It seems like if LaVerne is going to show any rays of hope this season their matchup with PP is as good a time as any...  I know it will likely take some time for the Leos to rebuild but I guess I thought they'd look a little better this year.

Whittier always surprises one or two teams every year, and this could be their week, especially if the new QB has more success throwing the ball.  I am not saying I think Redlands will come in deflated after the Oxy game, it's more that the Poets seem to have an ability to throw a wrench in the works, especially when they're at home.

man i hope my Poets put up a fight. Good news is they played a good second half against the Panthers and the new QB (Fallon) shot some life into the situation.

Very much hoping that this is going to be a BIG surprise for Redlands Saturday  ;)

I heard that Redlands will be missing (among others) a starter in their secondary for a few games (maybe even the season) - apparently a casualty of the Oxy game last week.
If the Poets have a passing game, today might be a good day to use it.
I think the Bulldogs got more than just their feelings hurt in last week's game.

Best of luck to all our SCIAC teams this weekend.

Sounds like the injury bug is sure hitting hard for the Pups. Wishing all their injured players a speedy recovery. Speaking of injuries, as previous posters had mentioned, if the Poets Coaching staff can take a pg. out of the Oxy coaches game plan and know how to expose the areas in which back-up players are filling in, there might be a big possibility that the Poets walk away with a W.

Good luck to the stags, as they take on a good kingsmen team. This will be a tough test for the stags, but in the end, I'm sorry to say that the Kingsmens do come out with the W.

As for the Leo's, I have a feeling that today they win against their young counter parts in Pomona. I'm sure these Leo seniors and upperclass men are just in need for a win. What game play do the Leo's come with? I have no clue.

Finally, Oxy dominates all across the field. From Offense/ Defense to Coach W's favorite unit, special teams/punt team, the Tigers take care of business (and of course prove TigerSports wrong in his Opinion about any let down.)

Redlands  53   Final
Whittier   14

Just saw the stats on this one.  OUCH is all I can say for the Whittier QB's.  Nothing overly impressive about the Redlands stats, other than the three pick 6's.

Saw the Cal Lu/CMS stats too.  That game looks like it could have been a lot worse.  80 of CMS' rushing yards came on 1 play.  CLU QB had a rough time with 3 Int's (one for a TD).  Looks like the CLU "D" is pretty good.

Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a nice win.... It seems the second and third string players at Redlands could probably start at many other schools -  this must be a testament to the recruiting skills of their coaches!
I will be looking forward to the Cal Lu - Redlands game at the end of the season.

FTP........Sometimes playing for the love of the game is tough.  Good luck the rest of the way.  You and DAW are loyal fans and sounds like supportive parents.  I miss not seeing my son play and next fall seems like an eternity away.  Enjoy it while it lasts, regardless of the outcome.

Props to The Men in Orange and Black on their Victory against an up and coming Panther team. Although from the looks of the score it may seem that the Panthers were close to the Tigers all game long, the stat's/ recap's points out that the panthers were trying to claw their way back during mop-up duty (at least that's what i hope occured. More to come from OxyBob's EyeWitness account??/). Congrats to the Tigers on a great game by the Offense and Defense.

By the Way, Local TV station ABC Channel 7, ran a short story on Coach Ort after tonights big game on T.v.
Sports Caster Rob Fukazakii (sp???) apparently played Baseball at La Verne and felt that it was right to Highlight a campus legend like Coach Ort on TV. The clip definately highlighted what a lot of you guys previously posted and sure did a good service in teaching young bucks like myself and the So.Cal community who Coach Ort was as a human being and then as a D3 coach. Great job.  Finally, the memorial highlight that La Verne's campus is planning to do for Coach Ort is still on. Refer to previous post on further info on time and where specifically on campus is this event going to take place.

Congrats to the Kingsmen and Pups, respectively, on their wins tonight.

Sabretooth Tiger

From the Oxy website:

ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2008) – It was a cool, October evening at Wilson Field on the campus of Chapman University where the Occidental College Tigers came back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to defeat the Panthers 31-28 in their final non-conference competition of the 2008 season. Oxy  used a solid third quarter, in which they converted 4-of-4 third-down conversions en route to scoring 28 points.

After a not-so-hot start for the Tigers, the tempo quickly changed in the second half as everything came together for an Oxy offense that fumbled twice in the first half, losing both. The Tigers defense was on its game, though, picking off Chapman quarterback Eric Marty twice, once by Patrick Sarkissian and the other by freshman Nate Sullivan.

To open things after the break, the Tigers received the ball, after winning the coin toss and opting to kick off to start the game, gaining good field position as Nick Saraceni ran the ball back 16 yards to set up the first Oxy drive of the second half from their own 31 yard line.

In just 2:06 the Tigers drove the ball down the field 69 yards on six plays culminating with Bryan Fiorito running 28-yards into the end zone, giving the Tigers their first lead of the game.

Fiorito found his groove in the second half, finishing with 98 yards after rushing for -2 yards in the opening half.

Senior quarterback Justin Goltz also found his feet in the second half using a 24-yard touchdown run with 9:15 to play in the third quarter to give Oxy a 17-7 lead.

Chapman wouldn't go away so easily, though as Marty found an open Dan Delahoussaye for a 42-yard TD completion to get the score back within three at 17-14.

Saraceni again gave the Tigers good field position at the Oxy 40-yard line after a short Panther kickoff. Kyle Kazarian carried the ball on his first snap of the season after Goltz left briefly with a leg injury on the drive. On the next play Kazarian connected with Jordan Washington for his first reception of the game and a first down. Under pressure Kazarian got a pass off to Jason Lehman who mad an acrobatic catch for the Tigers. Two plays later, with Goltz back under center, Lehman had a step on his defender and caught a 16-yard pass for the third Tigers touchdown of the game. Neil Martin again ended the play with a PAT to put the tigers back up by double figures at 24-14 with 3:36 to play in the third quarter.

Oxy pushed back the Panthers three yards on their next possession, putting the ball back in the hands of the Tigers.

Over the next 2:05, Goltz completed a 26 yards pass to Lehman and a15 yard pass to Chris Washington, who leapt well over his defender for his first touchdown of the game, giving Oxy a 31-14 edge with 16 seconds to play in the third.

Again the Panthers retaliated and for the second time of the game Marty connected with Delahoussaye, this time for a 32-yard TD pass, to pull the score to 31-21 in favor of the Tigers with 12:20 remaining in regulation.

With under three minutes to play the Panthers struck again pulling the score to what would ultimately be the final score of the game at 31-28.

On the ensuing kick-off the Panthers attempted an on-side kick, which was unsuccessful as C. Washington recovered the ball.

Occidental attempted to run the ball and the clock, but were forced to punt with 14 seconds to play. His fifth attempt of the game sailed into the end zone for a touchback.

In their final two chances of the game the Oxy defense came up huge. On the first pass attempt Alex Wertheimer hurried Marty forcing an incomplete pass. Then, on the final play of the game Marty launched a Hail Mary attempt, which ended with Daniel Tromello's third interception of the season, his second in as many weeks.

Sarkissian led the Oxy defense with eight tackles, five solo, with his first pick of the season while Wertheimer finished with a pair of sacks and four total tackles. In just one half of football action Anthony Ostland recorded five tackles, all solo. JD Ciasulli broke up a pair of plays for the defense, one huge break-up on a Panthers fourth and six early in the fourth quarter.

While the end of the third quarter drug on, the first quarter took just 23 minutes as each team had possession twice without a score being recorded.

Chapman changed that with 9:42 to play in the opening quarter when senior running back Mike Christensen scurried through the Oxy defense for a 20-yards touchdown run. The play was finished off by a PAT kick by Jimmy Adranly to get on the board first.

Despite a number of opportunities in the opening stanza, the Tigers could only muster a 23-yard field goal by Martin with just eight seconds to play in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 7-3 entering the locker room.

The offense scored in all three red-zone chances they had tonight.

Goltz finished the game 24-for-28 for 250 yards, two touchdowns while adding 93 yards on the ground.

Lehman led all Tigers with 135 all-purpose yards with Fiorito and Goltz adding 98 and 93, respectively. Delahoussaye led all players with 190 receiving and all-purpose yards.

Occidental (5-0, 2-0 SCIAC) will be on the road next Saturday, Oct. 25, when they travel to La Verne to take on the Leopards, who notched their first win of the season today against Pomona-Pitzer, at 1:00 p.m.
