It appears as if I hit a nerve with some of you guys.  So sorry; I had no intention of insulting D3 or Redlands football.  It is the NCAA after all.  High school heroes rarely see the field as freshmen.  Many can't deal with it and quit....fact of life.

As a current UR graduate student and "old" football mom (my oldest played at Willamette, my youngest is at Idaho State), I was just repeating what has been discussed here on campus by some current football players (not only freshman), some players who were "cut", and some parents of both current and past players.

I was not insulting the coaches or boys who chose not to play football.  I know Mike Maynard,  and have the deepest respect for him - he loves his "boys" and Bulldog football to be sure! -  I have no doubt the recruits were told how hard they would have to work and how they were to have extreme mental toughness in order to achieve success on the field - I just get the impression a great many boys were told the same things prior to enrolling.

Unless you are currently on the practice field every day, there is no way any of us can judge the wackiness of ant particular member of the coaching staff. Much of the perception of a coach lies in the person being coached - aren't there a few first year position coaches at UR?  How can their quality adequately be judged at this time unless one is on the field every day with them?

Again, I did not mean to ruffle anybody's feathers; I was only responding (however misguided I may have been)  to the comment about UR not having the depth at the QB position it used to have.

No surprises about who took one of my karma points away!
I took your karma point away because your first post was somewhat tacky.  I have now changed it to a plus now that I have considered the following.  Many of the D3 players think they have a "scholarship" when they get normal aid.  Maybe this same kind of thinking leads them to believe they will be stars.  When this doesn't happen, they bitch and need someone to blame.

Keep posting.

Just my two cents worth but sometimes the persons perception (Player) of what is being said by the coaches may be taken out of context.  I know that part of the coaches jobs are to make going to their college the best choice so sometimes the person listening may hear something different.  Our son was recruited heavily by UR.  He received several phone calls, made a couple visits and stayed.  Each time Maynard sold him on why he should go their but I can tell you that he never guaranteed him that he would make the team / play.  He and the other coaches told him that he would be given every opportunity to compete for a place on the team.  In the end he chose to go someplace else but he (and our family) have nothing but respect for the coaches and their recruiting process.
And like you, I'm not trying to ruffel any feathers , just giving my opinion on the issue :)

Gosh, with depth and competition at UR like that, it looks like my kid made a good choice to go somewhere else and only had to wait two years behind some coach's "pet" QB named Collins....  ;)

Seriously, a lot of hot shot kids from high school have no clue how difficult and how much hard work it is to make a legitimate move to the next level.  For the most part, these kids were the best players on their high school teams, but the competition and required dedication is much greater.  I have no idea what was or wasn't said to any potential player at any school (and I'm sure the players hear what they want to hear), but their success or failure (however one defines that) is largely up to them - and no one else.  I  have an uncle who never played a down at the University of Michigan many years ago, but he still relishes the experience as priceless.  There are a lot of reasons why players don't succeed beyond high school, and I'm sure we all have our stories of "can't miss" players who didn't do squat at the next level.  As a sad follower of the Detroit Lions, I certainly understand how that works with college draft picks....

My last words on this...... I NEVER said Redlands recruits were promised playing time by the coaches...only stated what I heard from multiple sources... Many recruits were told they would be part of the Bulldog team, and then were "cut" to the "Developmental Squad".  Many had never even heard of the "Developmental Squad" prior to camp.

I heard that the coaches recruiting the boys rarely mention the "D-Squad"....I know we never heard of it when my son was being recruited by Redlands (and that wasn't too long ago.)  We were told that Bulldog football is serious and players were mentally tough.  :)

Most of the Redland's coaches are classy guys - and they are doing all that they can to get the best players to play Bulldog football.  I never meant to imply that they are not honest with recruits.  D3 is different than any other NCAA division because the coaches really don't know who they have showing up for camp until camp actually starts.  There are no "letters of intent", only our measly tuition deposit.  They have to recruit like crazy to make sure they have bodies.  No one can fault them for trying to get the best players out there.

It is up to parents to ask the right questions and make sure their boys are realistic in their expectations at the college sports level.  Kids need to know how much time and hard work it takes to be part of a team. College classes are no piece of cake either!

I love Redlands -  It is a fantastic community of scholars.  I hope the boys who are there now appreciate how lucky they are to be a part of it, with or without football.

I certainly hope I have not offended anybody else...These are only my opinions - take them or leave them as you will.

Talk about tip of the iceberg!  I figure the Lions have about two NFL players: kicker Jason Hansen (who is perfect this year on PATs and FGs, including 4-4 from 50+ yards, but is also approaching Methusaleh's age) and the one WR that may work out but who they don't throw to, Calvin Johnson (who had the ridiculous stat line this past Sunday of 2 catches for 154 yards).  Otherwise, Detroit has about as many NFL players as LA! ;D

Sabretooth Tiger

Anecdotal comment on the subject of UoR recruiting and whether recruits had "heard" of the development squad.

A very fine young man I know was recruited by both UoR and Oxy (among others).  UoR tossed a lot of $$ his way, Oxy didn't.  He was very well aware during the recruiting process, as were his parents, of the large number of players and the development squad.

So . . . if a kid says he was unaware of the development squad . . . I'm guessing that it may be a result of selective hearing/memory.

Oh yes, if you're interested, the young man became a Tiger.

I bleed green and orange.... ::) but at one point Coach Maynard nearly had me.

When I was on my trip in Redlands the coaches were definitely straight forward with me.... Made it clear that they always played the best players regardless of age/class... Said that they would have around 110 guys out... would make cuts... That as an 18 yr old I would be facing guys that were 22, bigger, stronger, more experienced...
Coach mentioned something about "I-10 eyes" the look that would fall upon freshmen faces when they realized that college football wasn't for them; wanted to hit the road and head home.

I knew what "I-10 eyes" were when I reported to Laverne camp at 175 lbs and was getting tossed around by a Seniors...That look fell upon some of the other kids face's and they didn't last... Happened to some that were more talented than myself.

Luckily I picked LaVerne for the right reasons:

Major - still work in the field i majored in...
Tuition - was less at ULV and I got more financial aid...

Wouldn't trade my college experience for anything...Made some of the best friends a guy could ask for, and actually got on the field and made some pretty big plays as a freshman...

Good post. For two of my years at Redlands, ULV was the toast of the SCIAC. They were talented accross the board. The 1995 team that was 9-0 could have done some major damage in the playoffs. Too bad back then it was just a 16 team field.

The 1994 team was very good and got beat pretty bad by St. Johns in the playoffs. They didn't help their cause by trashing the hotel they stayed in. The difference between the 1994/1995 team was like light and day. The 1995 ULV team was that talented. I believe the hotel incident played a major factor in the 1995 ULV team getting jobbed and being left at home. They just about blew everyone out that year including Redlands.

Since Redlands took back the SCIAC title in 1996, ULV has not been heard from since. The SCIAC needs them to be competitive again. Hopefully it happens sooner rather then later.

Oh yeah, Redlands in a monkey stomp on Saturday.

Goodspeed to all SCIAC teams today (and tonight) as they square off on several fields across the southland. I'll be heading over to La Verne to catch up on the battle of the Cats on what looks to be a beautiful midday game. Weather calls for 83 degree, clear blue skies (with a hint of brown smog of course), and calm winds. It should be awesome to watch some SCIAC football, eat some pizza from the Warehouse and try to balance this hang over with a beer or two from T. Phillips (or the local circle K). Hope to see any of you guys out in La Verne. Look for the tall guy wearing a Dodgers blue t-shirt.
