I think Klopenheimer was a little cranky this morning because he hadn't drank his daily glass of ethanol.

The day may soon come when Ob will actually be speechless.  In the words of an a MIAC poster....

Somebody wanted a take on Willamette and oxy.  I saw both games so here is an old lineman's view.
Offense:

I have no idea how well Willamette will hold onto the ball in a monsoon so comparing offenses is a toss up.  If I remember right Willamette ground it out and took up a lot of time while CLU did the run and gun that game.

The Willamette o line is big.  They owned the line of scrimmage and wore down the 3-4 d line of CLU.  They will give the front seven of oxy a run for their money.  Maybe play more a 4-3 and rotate your front d line to give them some air.

Oxy o line is strong as a unit, but not as big as Willamette (got away with a few uncalled holding penalties in last weeks game with clu but the refs did a good job of letting them play, which is why there were no penalties called on clu for hitting the QB late, I think, but who knows the reasoning of a ref?)  They did not let mistakes  affect them they flat out owned the CLU front seven.  They had a nice line surge and drove the ball and took advantage of field position provided by the oxy punter.  I am in retrospect, impressed with oxy's resilience

CLU could drive the ball on Willamette.  If that's because it's easier to run and gun without a wet ball, so be it.

CLU could not drive the ball on oxy and gave up six sacks.  I have never seen such clean pants on offensive lineman in rainy day game (all freshman line?)  So, mmm lots of technique and desire to hit someone on the second level (anyone) to work on boys!  Too much standing around a pile or watching your man make a tackle. IMO

It's hard to make a call on the defenses as the weather played a factor.  I am going to say Willamette by a bit just because they beat CLU without weather hindering either team

Special teams is were Oxy shines over Willamette.  Punting is excellent, KO coverage excellent.

So in short, It's a toss up except for oxy's special teams.

I really enjoyed the Oxy CLU game.  I have never seen two safety's in one game.  I got to watch the game with my dad who is a tiger from the 64 team, Dave Milam if any of you older tigers know him; he played DE and half back for Jim Mora.  We sat in the rain and elbowed each other all game long as both teams chased a wet ball.  I thought the field goal kick was good, I really wanted it to be good cause after the game I had to pay up.

I got to buy pops a big fat victory steak at Bandits . . .  a tri tip, wine and a smile.
It's ok, he bought me a victory steak last year.

I haven't seen Oxy. But Willamette's special teams were totally clutch in their huge game with Linfield. They blocked a punt for a touchdown, jumped on another poor punt snap, kicked a field goal, and easily won the field position and coverage parts of the kicking game.

Willamette does have something of a 'bend but don't break' defense. They give up some yards and drives, but not too many points. That's been okay (so far) because they defend in the red zone and score plenty of points themselves. Looks like they only average about 20% more yards than their opponents...but outscore 'em 5-to-2:  http://www.nwcsports.com/sports/fball/2008-09/stats/wu.htm

Yeah, you gotta love a scoring defense!  Seems like there's been a few TD's or almost TD's by special teams as well.  (WU that it is.)

snoop dawg

CLU's pass offense was not impressive either.  That will put more players in the box against the run.  If they throw the sideline pass to the WR's all day like they did against Oxy, their entire offense will get shut down.

During the CLU-Oxy game I was standing on the CLU  sideline and there was much fan grumbling about the inability to throw the ball down the field.  Even the pass they did complete at the end of the game to get into scoring position, which was almost right if front of me could have been broken up and the receiver was lucky to stay in bounds.

They will have a tough time against the UR defense.

Dude . . . if you're Dave Milam's son . . . that means that your paternal grandparents and my mom and dad were friends when they worked together at Los Angeles Airways . . . and your dad was my first ever babysitter when my folks had dinner with your grandparents one night and left Dave in charge of this baby . . .

Snoop-  Just curious here....why were you standing on the CLU sidelines?

snoop dawg

I live a few miles from CLU and decided to take in the game. I entered the stadium from the corner closest to the CLU  locker room.  When I walked down toward the field I heard my name called.  I prayed it wasn't OB and it wasn't.  It was one of the CLU basketball coaches who I played on the same team with in several basketball leagues.  I walked down to where he was standing chatted with him and basically stood there most of the game.  I did take shelter under the overhang of the locker room building a few times when it rained.

No other reason.

snoop dawg

JP....the truth be told.......I was trying to avoid OB at all costs.  I had forgotten my 9mm. ;)
