Welcome back old newbie . . . or is it new oldie . . . I look forward to enjoying your piss, vinegar, pithy quips, rapier like rejoinders and minor deity like internet research skills . . .

Meanwhile, I think you were kind in your projected score in this Saturday's game, though your spread is probably not far off . . . I predict a 30+ spread with Oxy putting over 50 pts on the board.

Of course, I may be making a serious mistake given that we have to play in daylight.

Io Triumphe!

With Occidental poised to go 9-0 prior to playoffs, - can  somebody enlighten me on the "battle of the shoes" ?  I am between classes and don't have a lot of time. ( besides, I am sure there are many of you who can give me a much better perspective than a Google search could!)  How many other SCIAC teams have gone undefeated?

Glad to hear about LR :) , and glad to see OxyBob is back to his witty jabs!

While it would be great to get two SCIAC teams into the dance . . . who wants to bet that if that happens, round one is Oxy hosting Redlands?

Prediction: The SCIAC will not get two teams into the playoffs. Redlands will beat CLU, and end up 8-1 and out of the playoffs. Willamette will beat Menlo, Oxy will beat Whittier, and Oxy will be @ Willamette for the first round.

Of course, the NCAA could do what they usually do and announce that Oxy will host Willamette in Round 1, then 20 minutes later change the pairings to give Willamette a bye and ship Oxy to play Mount Union.

From the Whittier school paper The Quaker Campus:

QuoteThe bronzed shoes the teams are playing for originally belonged to Myron Claxton, an  All-Conference and  All-American Poet running back who was drafted in the 1940 NFL Draft to the Giants. Occidental players stole his shoes in 1939 on the Thursday before the teams were scheduled to play, forcing Claxton to play in his work boots. Nonetheless, Whittier still won 36-0 and went on to win the SCIAC Championship that season.

According to Claxton's account of the game, he retrieved his shoes from the opponents' sideline after the win and brought them home. The shoes were then bronzed in 1946 by members of the Franklin Society.

I agree with OxyBob about Redlands getting left home.  The reasoning behind this is just like what happened to Cal Lu in 2006.  They went 8-1 with their only loss coming to Oxy (and it was pretty bad if I remember correctly).  Until the SCIAC shows it can be more competitive in the playoffs, they will get no love.  Of course, this is just my opinion.

That is a real possibility that will happen.  It would be a shame.  I wished I had seen the Oxy/Redlands game instead of the UD/Redlands game.  I have to say that the SCIAC has two teams that would be very good in the IIAC with the way Oxy beat Redlands and seeing Redlands beat up on the Spartans.  IMHO I think the SCIAC would be able to beat the MIAC champ, the IIAC champ and the MWC champ this year.  Not knowing the NWC can't comment on them and the WIAC is always tough but not impossible to beat.  So having two good teams it is a shame that one of them may get left home.

Since Nixon went to Whittier and Obama went to Oxy, maybe they need to have a Presidential trophy in some other sport.  :)

Actually Gazolly the Poets want to keep the shoes, ;D but we might have a problem with that... this is why OB asked that we have them polished and ready to go :(

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and state for the record that I think Obama will work out better for Oxy than Nixon did for Whitter.   ;)

For those of you in So Cal who are interested, this Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. on the local PBS station (KCET), Huell Howser's program "California's Gold" will focus on Obama's time at Oxy:

QuoteCalifornia's Gold #10016 - BARACK OBAMA'S CALIFORNIA COLLEGE DAYS

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Obama described Occidental as "a wonderful, small liberal arts college. The professors were diverse and inspiring. I ended up making some lifelong friendships there, and those first two years really helped me grow up."

Who knew that the next president of the United States had such a formative connection to California? Well I sure didn't! Join me as I get the Presidential tour
of Occidental College in Eagle Rock, where Barack Obama spent his Freshman and Sophomore years. We'll visit his dorm room, talk to some of his old professors,
and learn how his two years there helped to shape him.
