Tonight on KCET at 7:30 p.m.:

California's Gold with Huell Howser
Barack Obama's California College Days

A visit to Occidental College in Eagle Rock traces two years that president-elect Barack Obama spent there as an undergraduate.

From Jerry Crowe's "Text messages from press row..." column in the Los Angeles Times:

QuoteSeveral readers e-mailed to suggest that the chest-painted USC fans who spelled out P-L-A-Y-O-F-F-S at the Coliseum on Saturday, punctuating their message with a question mark rather than an exclamation point, may have been paying homage to Jim Mora's famous rant of a few years back. . . .

The then-Indianapolis Colts coach, asked about his team's chances of reaching the playoffs after a 2001 loss, replied incredulously, "What's that? Uh, playoffs? Don't talk about -- playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?" . . .

Mora, by the way, played tight end at Occidental College, where he roomed with 1988 presidential candidate Jack Kemp.

Anyone that thinks that Oxy will play anyone/anywhere but Willamette is kidding themselves.  While they may be good enough, Redlands will not make the tournament and Oxy will fly to Salem.  Despite the $1B plus the NCAA gets from the basketball tourney, if they can save 25k with one fewer flight, they will.  If Oxy and WU were #1 and #2 in the country, they would do the same exact thing.

Bingo!

OxyBob

I fear you're right, but hope you're wrong.  I've been suggesting a possible solution: import NCC as #1, then (assuming they both win first round) #2 vs. #3 is a natural matchup in the second round anyway.  The two flights first round (bringing others to WU and Oxy) would happen by the second round anyway (Oxy to WU, then bringing a team to the WU-Oxy winner); at most we're talkin' 2 vs. 3 flights in the first two rounds.

While seeds have gotten seriously 'bent' for both the West Coast and Texas, they've so far never made a #2 travel to a #1 - if they do, we will know positively that money beats ANYTHING.

Given the economic downturn and loss of wealth . . . my friends who have reason to know say that money will be the deciding factor . . . no doubt about it . . . one less flight is still a chunk of change.

And just for sh**s & grins:

The Salem, Oregon weather outlook for Saturday - November 22
Light Rain And Snow.
High: 37°F / 3°C.
Precipitation: 2.86mm (0.11 in)*

Hmm . . . should I wait until Sunday afternoon to start looking for my fleece and Gore-tex?

Call me psychic . . . but I got a good feeling on this one!

Man you're good... ;D  Actually he now has a gotee too!!... :-\  Actually this is the first football picture that he's ever taken where he has somewhat of a smile/smirk on his face.  (believe me looking at this photo is as close to a smile FTP and I have ever seen in his football photos)
There's no smiling in football!

Go TIGERS!!!

Tough days for Tiger Football.

Well don't you think that the NCAA should do everything possible to help stimulate this struggling economy?  Putting Redlands in and having two West Region flights would do it.  The could move UWW to the North and North Central to the West to get this done.   ;D ;D ;D ;D I think that is the leas that the NCAA could do for this struggling economy :D :D :D

If Redlands was an East Coast team and they finished at 8-1 they would be in. The bias that exists and their location will doom them.

The infusion of Redlands would also work.  Redlands to WU, someone to Oxy, winners match up in round two.  But NO to UWW to the North - we are already at least as overloaded as the West a few years back! We've currently got FIVE freakin' undefeated teams, which means an undefeated team having to travel in week one.  We need to EXPORT, not IMPORT! ;D

RFB, caught your comment just before hitting 'post'.  This year (barring a lot of upsets Saturday) there will be several one-loss teams sitting home.  I think Redlands has a real chance, but not making it would NOT (IMO) be a sign of bias.

DutchFan2004

I would agree that the bias thing is out this year.  It will be strictly a money thing.

To continue with the jabs to Whitter this week: Oxy knocks the lights out of the Poets in two quarters and puts on a homecoming show that will make Tooth and his 1845 Raisin Bowl teammates wish they can put the leatherhelmets back on.

Final Score Oxy 68 Whitter 32. Sorry Poets, Oxy seniors and Co. are looking forward in teahcing your team one last lesson before they take off to the big dance.

Whittier 32??!!  Good lord I hope Oxy has a better "D" than that, even if it is their 3rd string guys.

Browneagle64

Oxy wants to teach them a lesson JP not embrass them. You know, let Whitter send their seniors off at least scoring Points during mop up time. Believe me, the Tigers have been on the opposite end in the late 90's and know all to well how that feels.

Can you come up with a scenario where Redlands gets in and comes to UMHB or HSU?  That would make a lot of people happy.
