I'm curious about how well Oxy travels - anyone able to give an educated guess as to how many Oxy fans we can expect at McCullough on Saturday?

Expect a large contingent.  At the first game of the season, we had almost as many fans as Colorado College!

Thanks for the response. Last week, McCullough was as full as I've ever seen it, but with not many Menlo fans. Expect a warm welcome this weekend despite the weather. :)

Item from the Salem Statesman Journal:

QuoteNo. 6 Willamette dominates all-NWC football all-stars

Mark Speckman of the sixth-ranked Bearcats was named coach of the year in the Northwest Conference for leading Willamette to a 10-0 overall record and a 6-0 mark in the NWC.

Willamette flanker Merben Woo shared NWC offensive player of the year honors with running back Adam Anderson of Whitworth.

Bearcats inside linebacker Tommy Grove shared defensive player of the year with defensive lineman Taylor Summers of Linfield.

In addition to Woo and Grove, eight other Willamette players were named first-team all-conference.

Offensive players honored were quarterback Grant Leslie, running back Deon Horne and offensive linemen Scott Hirschberger and Jake Forshey.

Defensive players on the first team were defensive lineman Marcus Ford, linebacker Jack Bevins and defensive backs Ryan Bettencourt and Arlin Taylor.

The Bearcats had four spots on the second team, wide receiver Scott Schoettgen, tight end Josh Lee, offensive lineman Joe Penkala and defensive lineman Corey Lowe.

Defensive lineman Ford, a 5-11, 215-pound senior from Marina, Calif., was named NWC defensive player of the week for his 3.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss in the Bearcats' 28-3 win against Menlo.

Willamette opens NCAA Division III playoff play at noon Saturday at McCulloch Stadium against Occidental (Calif.).

Item from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat:

QuoteIn a game with a distinct Empire flavor, Occidental College will visit Willamette University on Saturday in the first round of the 32-team NCAA Division III playoffs in Salem, Ore.

Occidental (9-0) has advanced thanks to contributions from brothers Chris and Jordan Washington, who both starred at Point Arena. Chris, a junior wide receiver, has a team-high 47 catches for 573 yards and six touchdowns. Jordan, a freshman, has 23 catches for 312 yards and one score.

Willamette (10-0) has a roster that includes punter/placekicker Mitchell Rowan (Rancho Cotate), linebacker Andrew Ross (Petaluma), cornerback James Perez (Petaluma) and defensive tackle Chris Reil (Casa Grande).

No but WU's starters appear to be playing a bit longer than the Oxy starters.

In the Menlo game they were in through the last drive which ran out the clock, this included a scoring drive while up 21-3.

Not sure what game you were watching, but the last "drive" was the WU QB on the Menlo 15 taking a knee.  The TD was scored earlier in the 4th Qtr.  They could've scored or kicked a FG but didn't.
So they took a knee for 8 minutes?  Congratulations on not running up the score too high in that one.  The last drive is exactly what I said it was, the starters running out the clock.

I guess if your definition of "running up the score" is scoring one TD in the 2nd half -- guilty!  Most of the scoring was done in the 1st half.  Don't know why Speckman didn't throw in the reserves, but he did start a lot of people who don't usually -- probably because it was Senior Day.

D.O.C.  You better specify which prison -- there's about 5 of them in Salem, and that's not including the youth facilities.

Oxy was one of many victims. Linfield was 13-0, averaged 50 points a game, and kicked the crap out of everyone except UMHB in the last game.

I appreciate the thought. However, it's "Linfield Didn't Make The Playoffs For The Third Straight Year" Week, too.

That was the Brett Elliot QB days!  Part of the Linfield Glory Days.  Don't tell them it's over, OxyBob--we just let them think the game this weekend is about them.

Nice in-depth coverage of Oxy and the upcoming matchup on the Oxy website.  Worth a read!

QuoteBack in 2004 the two teams met in the first round of the NCAA Division III Post Season. The Tigers walked away victorious, pounding the Bearcats 28-14 in the last home playoff game in Oxy history.

Pounding? Well, not exactly. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime. Oxy scored a TD at the beginning of the 3rd quarter on a long pass play, and one at the beginning of the 4th quarter after Willamette fumbled a punt on its own 15. The Oxy defense played great in the second half, but otherwise that was a close game. Also, I hope that wasn't the last home playoff game in Oxy history.

As nitpicking inherently requires fastidious, meticulous attention to detail, the term has become appropriated to describe the practice of meticulously searching for minor, even trivial errors in detail (often referred to as "nits" as well), and then criticising them (see nitpicking (pastime)).
