oxytigersroar....I agree with your post but I think one point needs to be made.  Other than Oxy, CLU and UR, the SCIAC was really weak this year.  A strong team with a strong running game against weak team does two things, takes a lot of pressure off a less experienced QB and definitely makes it easier for him to be a successful passer.  On the other hand, a lesser experienced QB may not have the same success in big games against teams with good defenses like Oxy and CLU.

Why all the discussion of the Heisman Trophy centering around quarterbacks?
Key player on the team.
Selway looked to be the best quarterback in the conference in August.

I'm pretty sure the NCAA rule is you have 10 semesters to finish your eligibility once you've started your first season (a season constitutes as attending one practice after the 1st game).  If he's been at Redlands for 4 years now and applied (in a previous season) for a 5th and it was granted, then it sounds like he could come back next year.  However, if this is his 5th year then he won't get a 6th for another injury.  That's my understanding of the rules but I could very well be wrong.

I am not positive but I believe that is for division 1 athletes. I don't think there is a specific amount of time for division 3 eligibility.

snoop dawg

I am almost sure the 10 semester rule applies to all divisions.  Redshirt rules vary.  Selway took a medical redshirt his soph year, played his junior and was injured this, his senior year.  Therefore, he has one year left.

Pat Coleman

Ten full-time semesters, yes.

The Division I-style clock, no.

There's an implication in an earlier post that with Oxy, UR and CLU the SCIAC is a good football conference.

Really?  Since when?

What's the SCIAC's alltime DIII postseason record?

It's a bad football conference.  A bad athletic conference, period.

So Pat, he played as a freshman, took a medical redshirt as a soph, played as a jr, and was injured most of this year, so, isn't it correct to say he has one more year?  He should have his redshirt year back, right?

snoop dawg

Cal son......if your referring to my post, I was only stating my opinion that Ox, UR and CLU were the 3 strongest teams in the SCIAC, there was no reference to a comparison with any other conference or any inference to the overall strength of the SCIAC.

Tennis? Water Polo? Cross Country?

Below average, perhaps, but not "bad."  Unless all one cares about are three or four sports.

My understanding (NOT guaranteed to be correcct! ;)) is that the rule is 10 semesters of full-time enrollment as a student (but, unlike d1, they need not be within five calendar years - hence, that 40-something fb player in Texas).  So (redshirt or not, playing or not) how many semesters has he been a full-time student?

snoop dawg

This is his sr year academically, the fall 08 semester was his seventh.  I am almost positive.

Mr. Ypsi

In that case he is definitely eligible next year, regardless of any discussion of a redshirt year this year.

Who is this joker? The SCIAC is by no means a power house conference but to call it a bad conference is just plain idiotic.

How many SCIAC games have you seen?  You must be spending your time in La Verne.

Three SCIAC institutions . . . Claremont, Pomona and Oxy are all in the top 100 NCSA power ranked institutions (across all NCAA divisions) . . .

What's your definition of a "good" conference?

He's the guy who earlier in the year was asking about why the SCIAC schools wern't playing Azusa Pacific.
