Sir Spiedie

RT, I usually try to go up there once a year for the races.  Whats the best steak place in Saratoga?  Whenever we go up we end up at some place downtown (dont remember the name).  But its the place where you walk in, the bar is to your right, and the tables are kind of straight ahead up some stairs, and there is some seating outside to the right?  Anyway, that place is ok, but Im getting tired of it and  Im thinking there might be a better place for steaks.

Try The Good Times Restaurant (I'm not kidding, that's the name)on Ballston Lake. No. it's not run by JJ. But allow me to say it is DyNoMite!

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

I am in Central Florida. I am originally from NY and have a lot of family in NY/NJ, hence my interest in the area. My son is a junior this year and hasn't really zeroed in on any school.

AUPepBand has spent Spring Break in DeLand, FL the past four years, accompanying about 30 Alfred students on a Habitat for Humanity trip in which they build two houses in five days with the West Volusia Habitat affiliate. Spend the last afternoon at New Smyrna Beach. All in all, a great experience for Pep, well worth repeating. Will be building again March 5-9, 2007. Would be happy for you and your son to meet some students from Alfred University there, if you're at all interested in a small diverse university in a charming small college town in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.....as Pep has posted before, Alfred's not the end of the earth, but you can see it from here.

In the next installmen of "RT's NY Dive Towns", we will explore the West region of NYS:

1)Jamestown
2)Albion
3)Medina
4)Olean
5)Wellsville
6)Newark
7)Waterloo
8)Batavia
9)Red Jacket
10)Salamanca

Given my suggestion to include a backwoods town from Allegany County, AUPepBand understands that RT could not find on the map a town of any size in Allegany County to merit inclusion on "RT's NY Dive Town." Given that most any town (there are no cities) in Allegany County could be called a "dive town," Wellsville, in fact, is probably the county's most affluent village. Would you consider replacing Wellsville with Oil Town Bolivar?

is this deja vu or am I losing it? We had this exact discussion the other day, right down to me correcting the poster on the bar being to the left, not the right. It's Doc's Steakhouse you speak of. The Old Bryan Inn, Pennell's, and Grey Gelding are other good options for steak in Saratoga.

And whoever mentioned 677 Prime...it's in downtown Albany, way overrated for the price, plus who'd drive 30 miles to go there after the races?

Upstate,

I'm surprised none of our Niagara county towns got on the dive list!

A side note, Time Warner is having a disagreement with Sinclair Broadcasting (which owns several TV stations around the area)..... If the deal does not get complete by New Year's, People in the Buffalo, and Syracuse (Not Sure about Rochester...) Viewing areas with Time Warner Cable will stop getting FOX.... thus no NFC Playoffs or BCS bowl games.  Time warner seems to be a grinch!

Alfred: the only distractions to one's studies are the squirrels and deer; ideal setting for a serious student...and a football player who wants a life after his collegiate playing days are over.

It may be "ideal" for the "serious" student, but it sounds altogether boring.  The social atmosphere is a big part of college as well....and I'm sure many football players in less "boring" college areas have gotten a life after their playing years were over.

I don't think that is too strong of an argument.  Plus I think the insanity rate there must be much much higher  :P

Time Warner bought out our independently owned Alfred TV Cable Company (You've probably seen "Cable Guy"...AUPepBand could tell you stories about Alfred's "Cable Lady" but won't start that now)...TWC charges TWICE what the independent charged, throwing in a glut of bogus channels. AUPepBand quit paying the cable bill and, once shut off, opted to take the Frontier package providing unlimited long distance, high-speed internet and 120 channels through DirectTV...for a $18 more per month that Pep was paying for basic phone (no long distance) and TV cable. Saw the commercial about TWC may be losing FOX.... Pep's glad he kissed TWC goodbye  :-*

Actually, Alfred grows on the students. One must be a little more imaginative to entertain oneself for certain, but said social dilemma of which you speak is non-existent. Gosh, 5,500 students in a one-traffic-light town yields plenty of green lights for socializing. AU has a fabulous Student Activities Dept. run by AU alums who, coming from such social meccas as Long Island (plenty of opportunity to chat on the L.I.E.) and spent four years on campus, know what works for the students. Weekends are anything but boring.
