Sir Spiedie

Back in the day when the Bucaneers were in the same division as the Packers, Tampa  was chock full of cheese heads who loved the fact they could, first of all, even get tickets here, which are very difficult to come by in Green Bay, and second, it was an easy trip and pretty cheap to stay in Tampa Bay area. Ditto Chicago fans.
Actually, the Big Sombrero as Tampa Stadium used to be called, was basically a neutral field for Chicago and Green Bay. Not so, Chairman Jose?

Spiede you are ripping my heart out bashing old Tampa Stadium.  You are actually pretty right, especially for the Bears.  It was generally about 50-50 Bucs fans to non Bucs fans.  When Chicago and GB weren't in town it was 50-50 Bucs fans to empty seats.  Man, the Chairman loved that old stadium though...

Sir Spiedie

Chairman----Spiedies butt is still sore from sitting on the concrete benches. But the old place had some style. And if I remember right when they tore it down they had to deal with all of the bats living there. Parking like down in Miami at the Orange Bowl. In peoples yards. Spiedie saw the first football game USF ever
played at the Sombrero. USF vs. Kentucky Wesleyan. USF won.

The Chairman was there for that as well.  When I was in high school we went to a lot of USF Football games because we could get good seats cheap.

Memo to E8ers and LLers----Hang in there. Today is the first day of Spring Training here in Lakeland, Fl. Home of the Sometimes Good, Sometimes Bad, But Always Entertaining Detroit Tigers! Ten or so miles  away is Winter Haven, home to the Clevleand Indians. As I recall, March in the Empire State is a month noted for its grayness and mud. Omnipresent mud. But March is followed by sweet April!

Chairman Jose---Will you be taking in a Yankees game?

AUPepBand refuses to hang around any longer in all this slop. At 6 a.m. Saturday, Pep will be on the 33-passenger Alfred University bus with 30 college students bound for Deland, Florida. We'll pick up a hitchhiker in Virginia, thus 32 of said 33 seats will be occupied....making a pit stop Saturday night in Rocky Mount, NC, then on to Daytona late Sunday afternoon (and it's Bike Week, no less) ...on to Deland to our fancy digs.

On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!

Safe travels Pep.  I heard an interview with a Professor of Molecular Science from "tiny Alfred University in Central New York" on NPR this morning.

Spiede is here, the Chairman is here, I think we should form the E8Nation Kickoff Classic in a Florida location.  First FB game of the season in the sunshine of Florida.  Pep can build a stadium if need be...

Perhaps our group of 30 students coming to Florida to build a house in Deland could skip that and build a stadium instead....that is, provided you've found some cheap swampland that would suffice.

Since when is Alfred University in Central New York? Not surprised about an AU prof on NPR. Three or four months ago, some Alfred folks' greetings were aired on NPR show...."from Alfred, New York, where the SUN comes out once a week."

Hmmmm, if AU is so tiny, I really should know who that molecular science prof might be.

Oh, and thanks, Jose....+K for the safe travel wishes!

The interview was about the next step in preventing the counterfeiting of paper currency.  The Prof was talking about cool tricks like money that couldn't be cut with scissors or money that became taught when you snapped it.

BTW, the Lois Butterfield book arrived yesterday. Had hoped to read it en route to Florida but couldn't wait to dig into it....loved the quote about IC playing at Alfred back when both teams were on the grandstand side of the field. Got a good look at the book, but will read through cover-to-cover on the bus.

Pep is seriously considering compiling a book on AU's "legendary" Coach Alex Yunevich.

Certain to be included would be the late Friday afternoon incident, when Pep had driven into town with Morrisville College roommate and, upon arriving in Alfred, took said roommate to Merrill Field, walking out on the grass to boast of its beauty when out of the fieldhouse door at the north end of the field comes the bulldog-faced Alex Yunevich barking, "Get the hell off the field!"

Yes, for some reason, my roommate never cared for Alex, yet to me he was, as Pat Coleman is well aware, legendary.

Congratulations to Alfred's men's swim team upon capturing their second state title in five years, and with it, the Empire 8 championship.

noticed that the state championship was for "upper ny"?  does that mean that "lower ny" state banana hammock, uh tgp meant swim, teams could contest this championship?

and...if it's upper ny - does that classify them as "polar bear" swimmers?

Sir Spiedie

PeP--King Al looks pretty bleak on the PePCam. It's going to be great for you to get  out of Dodge. You are coming down during arguably the nicest time of year. Try not to smash your thumb and respect the circular saws.

TGP - I've always wondered that as well...I think they just try to make the acronyms as long as possible.

Collegiate "State" Championships are weird anyway.
