While I like the National Title runs, I would be happy every fall if UF beat Tennessee, Georgia, and FSU and the Bombers beat Cortland and there current flavor-of-the-month contender (today: Fisher).  Those 5 wins equal a good fall for me...at least until the Bombers can figure a way to return to the national scene.

I understand the newness (is that even a word?) factor with Fisher, but it's going on 5 years now that Fisher is on the rise & gives IC all it wants. Is that flavor of the month anymore? ehh...

Edit: And where is Brian Young when you need him?!?

Bomber Rant ahead... feel free to skip

Well boys, I am still in shock.  I had the game on the radio as I changed Lady Dubbz brakes and oil saterday.  (Sorry Caz for not being there.  was there any other FDC?)

The first half sounded good offensively.  Juvon connected on a 44 yarder to Crandall out of an "off set I."  I got all sorts of giggidy.   At that point I was thinking 54-6 blow out.   Then came special teams.  Ugh.... WTFSLADKFJASDLKFJSDALKFJSDAL! WTF IS GOING ON HERE!  jeeze is it  true you live and die with special teams?  A good special teams can make or break a game.  Yet we continue with this non sense that Tecmo mentioned.

Our running game, with the "3 headed monster" SHOULD BE ONE OF THE TOPS IN D3.  You have a former D1 "mudder," a 250lb FB, and a "Lighting Bolt" option... yet we dont see any life in our offensive plays.  There is little to no creativeness with these options.  Now, this is probably from our revolving door of coaches, but, none the less isnt Welch calling the plays?  I would think that when you have a QB with an arm like Juvon you try a play action Bomb every other time you're near the 50.  It makes me very angry that I can predict what we are about to call offensively.  Me!  If I can predict what is coming wouldn't you think the defensive coordinator on the opposing team that has watched tape for a week know what is coming?  ugh...

Defensively... omg.... I think we have covered everything that disgusts the Bomber nation. But, seriously though, where are our LB's?  In a 3-4 you would think at least one is blitzing all the time.  The bend dont break scheme we run doesnt work.  We should not be dropping all 4 LB's 2 out of 3 plays ( we may not be but, it looks that way).   I spoke with NSRB 6 times saterday after this loss and I became more angry after every conversation discussing defense.

Looking ahead for the Bombers I am concerned, as i think we all are.  Brockport beat a banged up Cortland pretty well.  SJF is possibly better than any team the Bombers have played in the last 5 years, respectively.  Springfield is in Springfield.  Alfred is walking around with a pissed off chip on their shoulder and could enter Bomberland undefeated.  Cortland is... oh boy... Cortland, I dont know if I could handle seeing their student section rush our field mooning and laughing at the bomber faithful again.  Can we over look Norwich and Utica??  It is very possible the Bombers finish 4-6 on the year.    Of course I dont want to see this.  We could finish 9-1. I like that thought a lot better.  However, after that display saterday I am concerned about 4-6.

So, from here on out its time to stay positive. I Look forward to Bomber PBR's at pre-game and seeing MIYH this weekend.

Thanks for listenin' gents.  That would have cost me $115 laying on the "couch."

a week ago if anybody asked you if Hatrwick was a cupcake-- i dont think you would have even blinked and said yes.

I absolutely would have said they were a cupcake.  That doesn't mean I wasn't worrying about a loss all week.  Who wants to open that can of worms on your favorite team before a game?

As for the flavor-of-the-month, I think they still are.  Five years is an exaggeration.  The 2002 game appears closer than it was.  The Bombers lead it 30-6 with 10 minutes to go before Fisher chipped in a few oh-by-the-way scores.  Fisher came to IC's level for the first time in 2003 with a near miss at Butterfield.  It seemed like a fluke at the time but, looking back, that is probably the first time Fisher really was even with IC.  IC fans didn't really give Fisher any credit until 2005 though.  So I will give you 2003-2007, which still has you about the same place Buff State was from 1998-2002 or Brockport was from 2000-2003.

Just for the record, the comment isn't made as a dig on Fisher.  Maybe they will sustain their success.  For the time being though, I am not ready to annoint this game as one I will circle every year from here on out.  If it develops into a longstanding rivalry, great.  But lets not assume that will happen until it does.

Rivalries don't just appear because one team has a short run of success.  I was merely saying that, regardless of record, I will have a generally happy winter if IC beats two teams: (1) Cortland and (2) Whomever is currently threatening them for supremacy in upstate.  This year, (2) is St. John Fisher.  In previous years, (2) has been Buff State, Hobart, Brockport, RPI (although, we never get to play them in regular season so they don't really fit into this category. Maybe the category should be "the regular season opponent currently battling them for upstate supremacy."), Union (same as RPI), etc.

If Fisher remains team number (2) for a long time, then maybe the list will be (1) Cortland, (2) Fisher, (3) flavor of the month.  For now, though, there are just 2 games.

The question of how to stop the tricky Springfield running game has perplexed teams throughout the E8 for years now (easy now IC, just making a point here).  But AU will answer that question this Saterday with two simple words - Don Miller.  The kid is a horse that routinely needs the attention of at least, yes at least, two lineman.  He is an immovable object.  When he walked through our locker room as a freshman during training camp, I asked who that guy was because I thought he was 35 or so and it seemed a little strange.  He has been buying beer since he was 10.  He once got in a staring contest with the sun... and won.

On the other side- Keeley is the maestro.  Said it all along and I'll say it again, he will be named the best player in that league this year.

Fisher is no flavor of the month.  They aren't chocolate or vanilla, but I'd go with Rocky Road.  Not an original, but a solid choice.

Golf- I'll have my clubs out for months yet.

Side note- I won a survivor NFL league this week in its 2nd week.  I took the bears everyone else took the Bengals.  Cleveland Rocks!

Pep- Have you had the chance to meet one of the new GA's Chris Fee yet?  He's a wise ace from some town called Ogdensburg and is affectionately known as Mount Fiji in the Sargent household.  You'll prolly run into him on the bball court where he thinks he's Cadillac from the And 1 tour.  With regards to the Sargent household, my parents are coming to the game this weekend with the Fees.  They'v got the empty nest syndrome and are dying to watch some good football.

hmmm.
when then can we call the IC SJFC game a rivalry?

Sarge:

Pep did catch Chris Fee fraternizing with a former SLU teammate prior to Saterday's game...."Hey, Coach, you know this guy?" "Yeah, I'm an SLU grad." "I knew that." Glad to hear the Sargents will be at Merrill Field this week. Hoping they'll take up their usual seats right next to the band!

As for Fee's ballin', Pep will see what he's got on the courts and no doubt shut him down.

Jordan's got his golf clubs...his game has no resemblance whatsoever to Pep's.

I think five things need to happen before the game is a legit rivalry.  Fisher and IC have already got two of them:

1) Both teams need significant wins in the series.  To date, I think each team only has one significant win.  (Struzzi streaking down the sideline and the rout last fall).  Those are really the only two games where a Fisher win would not have been considered an upset coming in.  So, in reality, the series for rivalry purposes is tied 1-1.

2) Both teams need significant road wins.  Homefield can't be the deciding factor, otherwise it isn't a true rivalry.  Based on what I said in (1) above, neither team has a true road win.

3) Fisher needs to turnover its roster (or at least its stars) at least three times to prove they aren't a flash in the pan.  Brockport couldn't turnover their stars once and Buff State couldn't do it more than once.  If Fisher continues to reload and never hits a rebuilding stretch, then they will have arrived.  I picked three times as an arbitrary number but I think the third turnover is proof they are here to stay.  So far, they are 2/3 of the way through their first turnover.  Sounds like Hanson may be a reload for Robby.  Not sure who has filled in for Feherenbach.  Kramer (the first legit QB in school history) still to be turned over.

4) The game needs to have legitimate postseason significance.  With the AQ and the state of the E8.  This is never going to be a problem.

5) The schools need to compete for players and students.  Rivalries are always better when you come up with people loyal to your rival.  Given IC's traditional recruiting strength in Rochester, this is not going to be a problem either.
