What i was getting at is that football, as compared to other sports, produces far fewer upsets.

Isn't this just basic probability from 7th grade math?  Football, as compared to other sports, plays far fewer games.  Therefore, Football has significantly fewer opportunities for a game to end in an "upset."

I would guess, without checking, that football games end in an "upset" at a relatively similar percentage to other sports.
If football is so straight forward why do i keep losing money every weekend on my bets?  I must be missing something...

Because your bets are determined by point spreads, not pure w-l columns.  Also bc the people that make those lines are employed to make those lines for a living that influences millions of dollars.  They use stats, variables and plug them into lengthy equations that are much smarter than you or I and smile while they take our money.  THere is a reason that Las Vegas has not gone outta business.

I wonder how many underdogs have won this year though......

There is no way the percentages are the same.  I'm still waiting for someone to give me another upset in the E8 this millenium.  Thats 8 seasons, with one major upset.  Are you telling me that there aren't at least 5 big each basketball season in the E8?

But once again you are forgetting all the variables that go along with DI football and the NFL.  The talent pool of the NFL is much more evened out due to salary caps, the draft, free agency, limited numbers of athletes, info., etc.
It's comparing apples and oranges with D3 football.

By the way, due to public perception, underdogs in the NFL in Vegas carry an inherent value.  But i still lose money

Define "upset" more clearly.

Utica beat Springfield a few years ago.

Also, if you are limiting it to a Norwich over Fisher type upset, then I would say there have been very few in E8 Basketball play over the last 10 years.

realistic

sarge - I also think what you said plays right into Q's point about the different # of games...therefore needing to use the percentage.

How about an informal poll today? I assume most everyone on this site is either in or attended college, so lets hear from everybody on what was the deciding factor for you choosing the college you attended.

No football in Kaz00's past either, but I had my colleges down to Alfred, Franklin & Marshall, and Susquehana.  Susquehana gave me the best FA package, but was my third choice.  So, I took the offer to AU and F&M.  AU matched and had a more diverse populace, so I became a Saxon.  And when I switched majors from Pep's beloved Communications to Economics I was glad I picked Alfred and could take classes in the business school!

right, I know nothing about E8 basketball (except when my friend at Amherst College said that SJF was the most overated bunch of punks he has ever seen in d3 basketball), but the bottom half of the E8 in football have been some of the worst teams in the country, while in bball, the bottom half probably are around the middle of the pack in the nation.

Jose: Which one of those guys in your signature photo would you say is Pep?

I'd say it's the guy to the left of middle who's a little too close to the guy in the dead center and looking like he might start groping his buddy at any point in time.

Pep chose Morrisville because it had a two-year journalism school and Pep wanted to get right to his chosen career of sportswriting without two years of liberal arts before touching upon his major like at, say, Syracuse or St. Bonaventure. Pep would have happily gone to AU (tuition free) had AU offered journalism or, as it does now, communications

So I assume you soaked up the wit and wisdom of one BMcD while at Morris Vile?

admirals- i would think that the facilities, quality of program and location would play a larger role.  most of the colleges in the E8 are pretty close in cost---as we have pointed out- IC being the priciest.

perhaps the priciest... but NSRB believes their are many benefits to going to IC than some place else.

- the name Ithaca carries alot of weight.  Any time i've ever mentioned Ithaca, people say, oooh.. thats a good school
-Park School of Communication  (right up there with Newhouse)
-relationship with Cornell (classes, internships, jobs, etc)
-the gorges .. i mean gorgeous 1-7's
-national champions of many sports and very competitive club teams
-recently renovated housing and academic buildings
-did i mention the 1-7's
-the infamous First Down Club
-the view,  not to be confused with the daytime television show with Bubwa Whaters

-Famous alumni: Bob Iger (Disney CEO), Sarah Hughes (olympic figure skater)'s brother, Vanessa Carlton (singer)'s sister, Sal Palantonio (ESPN guy) daughter, Bob Napoleon (father of JOe Napoleon football star)'s son, Man in Yellow Hat (not to be confused with Curious George fellow, educator and coach), Man in Orange Hat (hippie school employee), Billy Beer Goggles aka Dubbz (unsure title, softball player for Poofers United), lineback (chicago football star and #1 fan of Winnie the Pooh), Enforcer (big dude... very big dude, also known as Sasquatch or guy you dont want to mess with at Benchwarmers or MicCawbers), HighLife Bomber (unemployed, #1 fan of Miller HIghLife, and #2 fan of Phildelphia Eagles), and last but not least NSRB (responsible for the Textor Fish Ball to roll off and roll down to Cayuga Lake upon his graduation)

To the Wick boys,
analysis-

Once again Keeley proves he's the best player in the league.
AU Defense dominates.
Some kid named Zarzycki scores a fluke td late.
And Tone Williams has put on 10 more pounds
AU wins 42-24.

Once again, Sarge is dead on about Hartwick scoring 40 points.  I have been around almost as long as father time (Sarge) and have saw Hartwick when they were a really good teams back in the days of Ty Smith and Ryan Soule.  The league is as close to even as it will ever be.  Dont get me wrong the wins against Fisher and Ithaca were great programs wins.  There are still a few tough games left for Hartwick as well a AU with 3 on the road.  I can honestly say I dont believe they will reach 21 unless Sarge nose gets str8 and he comes out of retirement only to hurt his knee celebrating in the endzone after he scores.

Final Score

AU 42
Hartwick 17

the greatest part of IC.... gorgeous 1-7's......a.k.a. most beautiful women in the north east.  IC is rated in the top 5 hottest girls for playboys top 25 college campuses.  (obviously they break it down in # of students.  IC is in the 5000-10,000 student bracket.)  i dont think we'll ever beat ASU.
