Pep would have to comment that IC has never been complacent with ECACs. In fact, Pep recalls (and correct me, IC fans if Pep is wrong here) that in a recent season that turned out less than had been expected, the team VOTED NOT to participate in ECAC while failing to make NCAAs.

Pep has a deep respect for the Ithaca program because it was built by one classy Jim Butterfield, who, in his early years, had some tough times as IC played the West Chesters, Bridgeports, CW Posts, American Int'l, but who set the bar pretty high for the rest of Upstate NY small college football.

Butterfield's program peaked at an opportune time with the establishment of the NCAA Division III National Championship playoffs. Had the D3 party started in the early '50s, the bulldog-faced Alex Yunevich no doubt would have had his boys at Alfred vying for the last dance as he had back-to-back unbeaten seasons in 1955-56.

In Alex's last year at Alfred, in 1976, Pep remembers the game at South Hill Field that Lois described in Wasn't That Fun as "boring." You see, Alex put all his athletes on the defensive side of the ball with the philosophical approach of "If we can keep our opponent from scoring, we have a better shot of winning." In that game at Ithaca, the Saxons took advantage of an IC miscue and scored a field goal in the first quarter. That lead held up until the final minute, when the Bombers mustered covered just enough real estate to get their kicker lined up for a game-tying field goal. Final: Alfred 3, Ithaca 3.

A week or so later, AU went to Canton to take on what was then a national powerhouse St. Lawrence team and, on a cold day with high winds across Weeks Field, the Saxons once again got an early field goal to take a 3-0 lead. With the Larries in Saxon territory for most of the fourth quarter, AU somehow kept the Larries out of the end zone and, with backs to the wall, took an intentional safety to get better field position. Final: Alfred 3, SLU 2.

At Alfred, while the Saxons are 6-for-6 in ECAC championships, the goal is always the NCAAs, achieved in 1981 when AU went 10-0.

Pep--

You read that book? What were your thoughts? I couldn't stand the writing style, but some of the games she discussed were interesting, as were the plays written in the back

Indeed, Pep bought a copy. Pep knows what you're saying about writing style. While it can't compare in style to Austin Murphy's The Sweet Season, Pep found her candid writing about his Alzheimers struggle to be particularly touching as Pep's pops was caregiver for Pep's mom, who passed in March 2007.

Pep, of course, enjoyed the references to Alfred and to read of AU football from an opponent's perspective...and mention was made of the odd way things were done at AU, like both team benches on the same side of the field, in front of the press box stands, while the opposite side was packed goalline to goalline with students.

Pep was happy to see a complete listing of Butterfield's games at IC.

Incidentally, Pep got a look at the actual Cortaca Jug in the Hill Center Saterday...it's a wonder there haven't been any pranks associated with said jug....or have there?

Pep--

The kids at IC view cortaca as a drinking binge with a football game thrown in for good measure...but now you've got me thinking...I want IC to lose the jug so I can steal it back...

"Your team was adequatttteeelllllly rated but we were still able to overcome that obstacle through perseverannnnce"

Almost as catchy as the "We got a....FIRST DOWN!!" mumblings chant heard from the FDC at IC games....

Yeah, why get up and cheer when you can sit on your a$$ and shake a cowbell. Real fans up there at Growney.

On an unrelated note, our speedy outings of player-posters is getting a little troubling... we're not even giving them a chance to make an ass out of themselves!

It wasnt a shot at the type of chant/cheer, i actually enjoy the FDC at games, it was more a shot at the lack of numbers of the FDC this year...

Pep in 1995 someone splashed a bunch of red paint all over the Cerrache building (where the lockerooms are below the visiting stands).  Still "unknown" who actually did this.

Gosh, could it perhaps been a fan of the RED Dragons?

Oh I forgot to add that.  I was the night before the Jug game at Ithaca.  But there were some stories as to who actually did it.

SJF Fan

NCAA regional rankings out.

Hard to argue with most of what they have there - Cortland #1 seed.  As of now, they deserve it - they play a pretty tough schedule.

I don't think I agree with Hartwick in the top 6.  Top 60 ok maybe, but you should not be rewarded for padding your schedule with the likes of Mt. Ida and Becker.

Real fans? Are you serious?

That must be a joke. Kind of like the vaunted FDC that produced an accumulated 13 members the past 3 years I've seen them.

Somewhere out there on the Interwebs there is/was a picture of drunken Cortland players, wearing helmets, taking a whiz (whizzes?) on the Ithaca sign at the back entrance below the Garden Apartments on Cortaca Night.  I'm pretty sure this was 2002 b/c those guys beat IC at home, then later drove down to Ithaca to rub it in.  I'm also pretty sure I walked past that exact spot that night shortly before the, uh, watersports.

Next time you might want to try "whizzing" instead of "take a whiz" when speaking of more than one whizzer.

PBR...

jose, congrats to the rays on a great season. that team is the real deal and will be very good for many seasons to come and should be able to bring home a championship for rays fans soon. pbr is going to laugh and watch as they are going to force the yanks and bosox to up their game. plus madden is a class act and great manager. pbr likes that he doesnt always do things by the book and sometimes just goes w/ a gut feeling. so pbr says well done to the rays as they had a great season and lets do it again next year.

fisheralum91

looking forward to seeing many of the doctors at the fisher game in utica on sat.
safe travels----for once i dont have to-----see ya sat am uc in hand

fisheralum91

i need to sound off a little here-- it has been been bothering me since the regional rankings came out----not having fisher ranked in the top ten seems crazy to me.
I was ho hum at first---even understood it- but now that it has set in--sjf really did get hammered by voters for playing the tough schedule this year-- and that is a suprise.
i know it has been brought up-- but are there any other thoughts about this-- am i missing something?
just is sitting south with me--call me a bit of a homer--ok - but i dont think that is it
