I think it's 152 players total. That really seems high, but I guess it would be 60 on varsity and the rest on JV? Something like that. I think the release is wrong, 152 freshmen would be redonklous.

That sounds more realistic. Pep was told there were 130+ in the Saxon camp here in Mayberry. Funny thing, Pep almost posted "Hooterville" instead of Mayberry. Anyone remember Hooterville Junction?

With Billie Jo, Betty Jo and Bobbie Jo?   :)

Don't forget Uncle Joe, he's moving kinda slow at the Junction, Petticoat Junction...

Hooterville was down the road a piece.  Hooterville is where the Douglas' lived.  I think it was near Bugtussle.

Ah yes, it WAS Petticoat Junction. But with Billie Jo, Betty Jo and Bobbie Jo, can one see how Pep might have remembered it as Hooterville Junction?

Hey all, Aaron Maybin finally signs with the Bills. I figure he just didn't want to spend any time at Fisher, which is understandable. :)

Does anyone know if Maybin is going to play tonight against the Pack?

Hey Pep, when is AU going to send out a press release on all incoming freshmen? Last year it was in July.  Do they even have a SID?

I knew it.
From the O-D

QuoteFaggiano started preseason camp Sunday with 150 players in camp, 90 of them freshmen, many of whom will play a nine-game junior varsity schedule. There are 18 starters back, split evenly between offense and defense, from a team that went 3-7 last year after losing some heartbreakers.

Time for BrilloIsOld to subscribe to the ALFRED SUN! Yes, AU has a very good SID in Mark Whitehouse.

Here's a link to the team preview story:

http://www.alfred.edu/pressreleases/viewrelease.cfm?ID=5543

Here's the freshman recruits story, which Pep could not find available online:

Alfred University set to welcome
66 freshman  football recruits

ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University football team will welcome 66 freshmen when preseason camp opens Aug. 14. Among the newcomers are six high school all-state selections from New York.
The New York all-state recruits are Mike Raplee, defensive tackle from Dundee; Chris Steeves, defensive end from Gates-Chili; Justin Mesi, offensive guard from Orchard Park; Nick Fabrizi, offensive lineman from Binghamton; Chuck Beckwith, tailback from Victor; and Bryan Tedford, defensive lineman from Saranac.
Raplee, 6-2 and 242 pounds, is a two-time all-state selection, having earned First Team Class D honors last fall at Dundee, a year after transferring from Geneva, were he was a Second Team Class B offensive lineman as a junior in 2007. He also earned All-Greater Rochester and All-Finger Lakes honors last season.
Steeves, 6-3, 225 pounds, was a Third Team Class AA all-star last fall. He also earned First Team Monroe County and All-Greater Rochester honors as a senior.
Mesi, 6-0, 250 pounds, was named a Third Team AA state all-star after helping head his team to the New York State Class AA title in 2008. He was also a First Team All-Western New York all-star last fall.
Fabrizi, 6-2 and 252 pounds, was a Fourth Team Class AA all-state offensive lineman as a senior in 2008.
Beckwith, 5-11 and 210 pounds, was a Second Team Class A all-star his senior year in 2008. He earned all-state honors as a linebacker but is slated to play tailback at AU.
Tedford, 6-0, 275 pounds, earned Second Team Class C all-state honors as a linebacker at Saranac Lake in 2007. He spent last year at Bridgton Academy, a college preparatory school in North Bridgton, ME, where he was a member of the football team.
Other notable recruits coming to AU this fall include Andre McCloud, wide receiver from Bath (NY) Haverling; Chris Harloff, offensive lineman from Victor, NY; Reggie Pressley, strong safety from Gates-Chili (Rochester, NY); Chris Lopez, tailback from Pittsford (NY) Sutherland; Chris Anderson, offensive lineman from Cicero-North Syracuse (NY); Brian Sinclair, tight end from Caledonia-Mumford (NY); and Andy Lata, wide receiver from Southwestern High School (Jamestown, NY).
McCloud (5-11, 170 pounds) ran for 1,599 yards en route to earning all-league honors at Bath Haverling in 2008. He was Co-MVP of a Rams' team that won a Section V Class B title and advanced to the Western Regionals of the state championship playoffs. McCloud was also a track and field standout at Bath, taking second in the 100-meter dash and long jump and third in the 200-meter dash as a junior at the 2007 state outdoor championships.
Pressley (5-9, 175 pounds) was a First Team Greater Rochester and Monroe County all-star as a senior in 2008 and was his team's Defensive MVP.
Sinclair (6-4, 200 pounds) earned First Team All-Livingston County league honors as a junior and senior in 2007 and 2008.

Brillo Is Old

Thank you Pep....Yes Brillo does need to subscribe to the Sun Times!

Thought the Saxons might get one of the skilled players from Maple Grove, but one went to Mount Union and the other to W&J.

Do the Saxons have 10 games next year, or is the schedule TBD?

Do not think the D3 football is as strong up here in MA. as in Upstate NY.  I am sure the local posters will disagree.  As I mentioned before, our high school has had 5 D1 players in the last 3-years.

Watching my Yanks get spanked by the Sox, but at least last nights game was good.  Going to the series finale tomorrow night.  Tough being a yanks fan up here.

If you take a ride down to P-Town they'll accept you a little more.

Good to see guys from Binghamton doing really well.  When I was there we were sort of on a mediocre stretch, though a lot of talented guys (a lot of trouble too).  They had a really excellent season last year and I think a handful of guys are DI or DI-AA (can't get down with FCS/FBS yet).  Also like to see kids from Bath, my pops' hometown.  I guess Alfred is the closest college to Steuben Co (don't think I ever individually went west past Bath/Savona).

Pep,

What's the word on McCloud? Is he going to be in the mix at all this year? If anything, they should have him returning punts & kickoff's... if he gets into the open field, it's lights out.

Surprised Alfred picked him up... maybe since they missed out on Robby, they figured they should pick up the next high profile back out of Bath. He won't be an every down back like Robby, pounding isn't his style. They should definitely find a way to get him the ball though. Think Percy Harvin type of dood.

Holler back.

PS- Use your pull to have someone put some time into that website, it's really awful.

Pep had thought McCloud would be a good slot receiver but it appears he's been working as a DB, where AU was decimated by graduation. Haven't seen special teams so don't know whether he's in the mix there (Manzer and Hendrix, both seniors, have a little speed, too), but from what Pep has seen, he's not training as a RB.  Pep is just confident that Coach Murray will utilize that speed.

Murray has a couple of solid freshmen RBs in Chuck Beckwith (Victor) and Chris Lopez (Pittsford Sutherland) that are more like Robby and should give AU more depth there. Pep is encouraged by what he's seen of Hendrix thus far. He's almost back to form (back when Pep beat him in a race).

Unfortunately, Pep doesn't have a lot of pull when it comes to things on campus such as athletic websites. Check out the library website, though....my office is next door to the guy who maintains the library website.  ;) www.herr.alfred.edu

JU:
Looks like the band will make the trip to UMASS-Dartmouth. One member will host us Friday night at her place....about an hour north of Dartmouth. Kick-off is 12 noon Saterday, Sept. 5, even though the AU website says 1 p.m. Hope you can make it...would be great to meet a fellow poster.

For now, Pep is preparing for Band Camp Aug. 29. Met some freshmen last night who play a variety of instruments and who seemed excited to learn that AU has a pep band. Stay tuned!
