Well, a win discrepancy like this (between Felix and Price/Sabathia) has rarely come down on the side of the ERA king. I was just using the Yankees as an example.

EDIT: And maybe I'm super sensitive about this because this year there was a lot of chirping from Joe Morgan types about how Felix couldn't "win games" like Sabathia could...

KS really wouldn't complain if Price or CC got it either.  This year a case can be made for all three being the best pitcher.

And turning to football, Pep was amused by Pat Coleman's take on AU's "turning point of the season" in the playoff team capsule:

This season's turning point: Could be an hour after the bracket was announced, when Alfred finally figured out what we knew all along and posted, that they were hosting SUNY-Maritime in the first round.

Pep was not alone in his delight in Alfred's first round draw and, as a result, overlooking the location. Perhaps it's that prevalent Rodney Dangerfield personae that resulted in AU fully expecting to travel this year.

On Saxon Warriors!

Seemed like a weird "turning point" though.  Certainly the high point for me this season (though the exhiliration of winning the Springfield, Fisher and Ithaca games was pretty intense), but I would think a better turning point was O'Brien's pick-six to open the scoring against Fisher after losing to RPI the week before.

That would be well and good if Alfred hadn't lost the next week, costing it a chance at being seeded for a home game. Second life, however, when the bracket was released. Or, more importantly, when Alfred got around to pulling a copy off our site, I guess.

Why do you seem so sore about Alfred doing a little due diligence before declaring they had a surreptitious home game?  It wasn't as though anyone made a big deal about Maritime not being able to host as was done for Cal Lutheran.  It was a genuine surprise to all of us and getting confirmation from the source rather than a third party seems logical to me.  Was it the canned press release that was posted once the bracket was announced (and then not updated quickly)?

So is the discussion, "that's an odd turning point" or is it "why did you point that out in the capsule?" Sounds like we're shifting gears and I don't want to discuss the old point if that wasn't what you really wanted to talk about.

I guess I'd like to know how you knew it took the Alfred football program an hour to discover their good fortune and why pulling a copy of the bracket from d3football.com supercedes speaking with the NCAA.

Kaz we were all checking their website for a long time that day..... and even when they got the info right in the story on the website, they never changed the headline, which conflicted.

I agree that IT dropped the ball on the website, but is that indicitive of whether or not the team/coaches knew it was a home game?  I had conversations within that first hour that confirmed the Athletic Department was working on the veracity of Alfred hosting, so that throw away line seems a little cheap to me.  Maybe I can't see the forest from the trees here, but Pat's attitude has seemed condescending toward Alfred on this matter.  And it's not like this is a typical scenario, so it's easy to see where the confusion can come from and difficulty in tracking down an IT person on a Sunday evening to change some text.

IT doesn't handle day-to-day content at any college, 00, not for the past decade anyway.

I only know timeline from Pep's description of events here and from my email to Alfred about it. I am sure you've read the capsules enough to realize that there are a lot of throwaway lines -- it's to keep people interested in reading thousands and thousands of words. Boring people to death is a sure way to lose them.

Fair enough.  I take umbrage with it and maybe unnecessarily so.  I do hope you are right in that it represents a turning point on a deep run in the playoffs!

In all seriousness, the turning point is usually the last point at which the team's season hopes turned in a positive direction. In this case, Alfred being selected to host is most definitely that point. (For some teams -- ahem, DePauw -- the last turning point of the season is a negative one.)

Say what you like -- apparently we're equal opportunity offenders. At least you can't call us biased. But I would say, we've never put out milquetoast capsules or surprise/disappointment/champion predictions either, so yeah, someone might not like what we say. We're not going to be so bland as to not risk offending anyone.

Ditto.  They were well written and interesting to read.  Thanks.
