interesting factoid.....In 2006, a STEPNICK-less Fisher D was absolutely obliterated by the high powered option attack of the Chris Sharpe led Pride in the reg season.  In the post season, with Stepnick back, the Defense shut 'em down.

Earlier this year the SJF D was beat down by Hobart.  Since then, a new CB (who's showing early signs of STEPNICK like skills), has been inserted in the starting line-up and the Defense has been outstanding since, including shutting down the option of SC.

SJF defense has history of getting smoked by the option and completely shutting it down.  It seems one common denominator when they shut it down is the presence and big play from their corners which provide great run support when there is no passing threat.

....so here's to Troy Sant CB.....play like Stepnick this week and we win.

I believe that when it comes to "Option teams," you can get no better than Salisbury, Springfield, and Maine Maritime. However, there is a big disparity between the athletes that Salisbury have on its team than that of Springfield, the same disparity there is between Springfield and Maine Maritime.

Unless St. John Fisher have great defensive ends and linebackers that can get off blocks and then chase down a toss like Wesley, I can see this game getting out of hand in the second half. Also, Salisbury has the ability to throw the ball this year, which prevents teams from blitzing their corners or rolling that safety down bringing eight in the box. I believe it is St. John Fisher offense that has to keep Salisbury offense off the field. I don't think St. John Fisher defense has seen the speed or athleticism. St. John Fisher offense attack is the key in winning the game for Fisher.  If St. John Fisher comes out with a balance style offense, executing in the pass and run game, they have a good chance. If they become one dimensional and start relying on either the pass or run separately, Salisbury has preyed on opponents that become one dimensional. Still, this is going to be a great game and with so much at stake, anything can occur, thus making this game great for the Empire 8 and all of Division 3.

Nice post here and very true. The Gulls seem to have a ton of athleticism on top of the ability to throw the ball well. dlip has always said to himself when watching the Springfield (who dlip agrees is not quite on Salisbury's level), "Boy if they could throw the ball well..." dlip concurrs with the thought, that to win, SJF's offense must keep the Gulls O off the field. The Cardinals O has been gradually improving each game. Looking at their performance against a decent Utica team, Kramer and Co showed some offensive prowess running and passing. It's going to be a great game!

I can't disagree with anything in your post. Salisbury presents a challenge athletically that Fisher has not seen yet. The Fisher D is good, but if the corners have to play the pass then that option will be a nightmare for the Fisher D.

Last year when Fisher fell on their face against SC's option that is all it was. Not that SC threw the ball a lot,  but they had a touchdown pass early in that game that forced the corners to at least consider the pass. SC kept getting the ball to the outside with either the run or pitch option, and Fisher only had one LB to defend it. It didn't end well.

If I was the Fisher defensive coordinator this week I would build my gameplan around first down. Try to get that option attack off schedule (i.e. 2nd and 8/9/10 instead of 2 and 4/5/6), and force Salisbury to make decisions on second down. If you can get an incomplete on 2nd and are looking at 3rd and long, you have the option team where you want them. That is much easier said than done, and SU can throw the ball, so it will be interesting to see what the Fisher D has for them.
GO FISHER!!!

good conversation and points being made here.  that is what i was hoping for since i will be heading to salisbury to see the game.  can st johns handle salisbury's athleticism on offense?  will st johns be able to move the ball well enough to keep the triple option riding the bench?  I have heard about the E8 since my son starting playing D3 football at wesley.  never had the chance to see any of them play in that time and have not gotten to add any game to my travels in the last couple of years since he graduated.  with the addition of salisbury and frostburg to the E8, the conference has not fared very well against salisbury this year with most of the games being blowouts.  is st. johns good enough to keep that from happening again?  i hope so since i want to see a good game, but i agree with suadc's assessment of what might happen.  this could end up being a blowout.  salisbury had two 50+ tds against wesley but was held in check the rest of the game.  salisbury has a pretty good defense and plays a 4-2-5 which is sometimes confusing to block.  both teams have plenty riding on the game as a second loss will likely end any playoff hopes.  who from fisher is making the trip, i would like to meet some of you fine folk.

FYI...its St. John Fisher, not St John's...no big deal, just that St John's plays in Minnesota and they are a very storied and successful d3 football school
