Bombers-I get it...But how much time can reporting on the red wings really take?  Box scores...recaps.....real heavy stuff
Lets hope for some good articles to come!

I'm kind of amazed you're hoping for (multiple!) articles about a D-III football team during the preseason while apparently believing that chronicling a professional team's postseason chances requires nothing more from a writer than a box score and recap.

I'm not trying to be snarky. I just feel like some people get on "traditional" news outlets who have multiple areas of coverage for not covering something that other niche outlets tackle more in-depth. You'll probably learn more about Fisher in kickoff than you would a newspaper article. No offense to the D&C, but what will they tell you that you couldn't easily find/infer from the posts here, info on the SJF website, Kickoff, and people you know around the program?

Given how most local newspapers are cutting back on coverage, I can't imagine a D-III football preview being a high priority for coverage. I remember freelancing for the Ithaca Journal when the men's hoops team was in the midst of their unprecedented 24-1 regular season. I covered a regular season conference game only because the sports editor happened upon me in a restaurant, mentioned "I'd love to have someone cover the Nazareth game tomorrow", and I had nothing else to do that night.

Sure, the Journal's a rag. But they're also not covering multiple professional sports teams.

No problem being snarky......
I was under the inpression that the D&C was a big time paper with a large staff.
When Roch area TV stations do reports I just figured that the D&C would follow suit.
When a little rag here in town did a nice piece on UC- i guess I was hoping for something in that guise.
Was a little disappointed thats all.
Im chomping at the bit for nuggets of info on the season ahead.
Over anxious i guess.
No blast - just looking forward to the season.

This has always been something I have noticed. In professional or big time college sports, the bigger your market area the more coverage you get (see the NY Yankees, Toronto Maple Leafs, USC, etc). In D3 it seems to me the smaller your market, the more in depth the coverage.

Fisher competes against several area teams in Rochester, but a team like Cortland gets a beat writer that does full coverage of every game. The paper is obviously much smaller, and does not have the resources of a D&C, but being the only game in town (C-State does compete for page space with two local high schools) does have its advantages when you are a fan.

I am doing the same as you 91. Just looking for any scrap of info I can find.
GO FISHER!!!

Clutching at straws and chomping at the bit.
Lets GO!

This.  Even if the paper has fewer resources in a small town, they're more likely to devote some of those resources to covering the small-town game because that's what people who are buying the small-town paper will care about.  If I want news on the nearest NFL team, or nearest D1 college team, I can get that from national sources anyway; people aren't buying the local paper for its NFL coverage.  They might buy the local paper for its coverage of the small D1, D2, or D3 school nearby.

That said, as Bombers pointed out, D3football.com does a pretty amazing job and you can probably get all relevant info about D3 teams from here + the school's individual website.  If the local paper gave a rundown of the projected starters and the first opponent, that still isn't much more informative than D3's Kickoff preview.
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

As a newspaper publisher (and editor and janitor), Pep just completed a survey for newspapers comparing its digital and print emphasis. As Pep's paper is not yet available online (Pep never wants to rush into these things....and for only two years has owned a vehicle manufactured this century), Pep's emphasis is in print and LOCAL NEWS.

Pep grew up reading about "behind the scenes" of Alfred University Football in the Hornell Evening Tribune because its sports editor, one incredible writer, the late Johnny Nelson, also served as SID at Alfred University. Always enjoyed his columns that brought the human element of sports to his readers. Stats are nice, but I can read a boxscore for that. Tell me a story.

The D&C sports staff, as has been Pep's observation, does not cover Alfred. Seventy-five miles south of the city, out of sight, out of mind...although a bulk of our student-athletes are from Rochester area schools.

Stay tuned....and get the fight song ready!

On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

T minus 2 days and counting!

Not sure what is going on with some top returners from Brockport's defense as they head into Saturdays contest vs Oberlin.

1st  ..as reported before 2nd team all NJAC DB Kharif Pryor doesn't return for his JR year..led team w 4 INTs.

2nd..I see HM all NJAC DL Tarik Bennett has been removed from the roster as of a couple days ago. He was entering his JR year looking to be a 3 year starter.      44     tackles last season, 15 tackles for loss and 7 sacks. Poof ? gone ?

3rd   and most disturbing,  according to the Brockport Police Blotter [public record] returning 1st team ALL NJAC DL Cortland Haines (6-2 245) (as a freshman..66 tackles and led team with 8 sacks in 2013.)...was arrested last week on 3rd degree assault..(19 years old)
He is still on the roster...interesting to see if he will receive any type of suspension/punishment from the school/athletic dept/ football coach. Will he play Saturday ?
Will he be sat down for the puffyish Oberlin game (Brockport is favored by 23 points) and then magically return for Cortland and SJF for weeks 2 and 3 ? Hmmm..

In total..that is a lot of returning defensive production to be potentially lost..Your leader in INTs followed by your top 2 returning sack leaders and top 2 Defensive linemen. What the heck ?

Nice piece on Fisher!

http://athletics.sjfc.edu/news/2014/9/5/FB_0905141612.aspx

I just saw this myself. I love the new take on the game notes. I checked out the Fisher all access link it mentions and that looks impressive as well. IMO Norm has done a really good job as the SID, and Fisher has always found ways to get the info to us fans.

I love all of it, but it doesn't beat being at Growney, so that is where I will be tomorrow. Anyone else making the trip?
GO FISHER!!!

I'll be there with my 4 minions.
