I hope it is just blip season and not something much more systemic, but i am really worried about this program.
Could it be that it was just a perfect storm of bad things?  maybe...

My pessimism is kicking in

I think I'm hard on Fisher pessimism because, well, what is there to be pessimistic about? I think a 13-year run like Fisher had from 2004-2016 is quite amazing, even if some fluky breaks cost some of their good teams playoff berths. (Mike Welch would tell you his best team ever missed the playoffs, if you want some sympathy.)

Given how this sport's fulcrum of power is firmly sitting in the midwest, the strength of the E8, and the razor thin margin of error you get outside of a Pool A bid, it was never going to be like 2004-2007 permanently. Which sucks, I guess, if you're a Fisher fan. But it's not really bad. Even 2008-2016 Fisher's pretty good.

This year undeniably sucks, but I think you guys are acting like you're the 2001 Buffalo State team that dropped off the planet and never really got above decent. You might just be like the 1995 Bombers, who went 1-3 against a tough early schedule, rebounded to finish 5-4, and then were good/very good up until 2011 or so

Hey, we can't all be Mount Union where a "speed bump" means we don't make it to Salemville! Pep was remembering back when the band was first formed and we played at all the home games. The program was in the tank but starting to make some strides with Dave Murray. The band got real excited when the Saxons actually won some football games.

Going back to Pep's infancy (Yes, we had electricity back then), the Saxons had back-to-back unbeaten seasons in 1955 and 1956. Yunie and his boys must have been sky high when the Washington Touchdown Club declared little Alfred as "small college football champions." The next three years, AU went 2-4-1, 1-6 and 0-6-1. Coach Yunevich said things were so bad that he went to donate blood and they didn't want it.

Then, from 1960 through his retirement in 1976, Yunie had only two more losing seasons. Asked why, after early success at Alfred, he didn't go on to coach in the big-time (he had some offers), he always said that "Well, if you lose, in Alfred, they don't burn you in effigy."

One of those losing seasons was in 1963 when AU, with a small squad, suffered numerous injuries in its first two games, wins over Cortland and Brockport, respectively. Despite battling admirably, the Saxons lost five straight games, failing to score in any of them, losing 14-0, 3-0, 6-0, 68-0 and 27-0. The next year (1964) AU finished 4-4-1 with one of those wins avenging the 68-0 loss, thus snapping the opponent's long winning streak.

Alabama legendary Coach Frank Thomas, who introduced the Notre Dame style of football to the South, said the factors comprising a successful football coach are five in number: 1) 60% material or what Yunie called "The Boys" 2) 10% Coach's personality 3) 10% Coach's knowledge 4) 10% Coach's ability to impart knowledge, and, 5) 10% Organization of practice.

In Pep's mind, Fisher hasn't fallen that far. Like Bombers said, the Cardinals lost their experienced QB to injury before the season started, and a top notch WR has been sidelined as well. SJFC has dropped off some from the factor that accounts for 60% of the program's determinant for success. But the Cardinals are still fighting and, hey, who knows, they could sweep the rest of their schedule. It would be just fine with Pep!

It actually is, if you think about it

sure- id rather be 0-5 getting waxed by good teams than 0-5 vs bad ones.....
but 0-5 is 0-5

and yes I can see an upside

You guys should pull a U.S. Soccer. Why not just adopt Brockport for the rest of the year? Or root for back-to-back Cortacas in the E8/LL bowl?

Upstate

Looks like a new starting Defense this week for Fisher.

Freshman DE Peters goes in, as well as Sophomore NT Miller.

They took Riechert (6'5", 225) that used to be a DE and moved him to OLB.

They took one CB, Thompson, and moved him to FS and elevated their back up CB behind Nelson to start.

Can't get any worse than it what it was, but at least they're trying something new!
