Sorry John- It may not have been live btu espn def  aired it.
It was quite a whila ago- but the game was in ithaca- and i was on Adelphia- so no time warner channel back then-- they called it the biggest little game.
You may want to double check.

Any old time IC guys -- back me up on this

FA91 - what year(s) roughly are you talking?  ESPN 2 hasn't been around for too long and I don't think a game since 1995 has been on there....thats really the extent of when I started paying attention to IC sports.

Fisheralum,

Are you maybe thinking of Empire Sports Network (ESN)?

I think there are multiple (we'd have a better shot at ESPN since about half the staff is IC alumns -- thats not exagerated either) but I believe one William J Weiss worked or works there.

One of the all time great personalities in the Lyon Press Box.

"personality" sums it up pretty well Jose

I remember the ESN.

The only Division III game on ESPN2 I can remember seeing that was not the Stagg Bowl was in the early days of ESPN2. This is when Suzy Kolber and Keith Olbermann were hosting "Sports Night" and they had those god-awful graphics. I think it was in 95 maybe, or 96. DePauw vs. Wabash playing for the Monon Bell. The only reason I watched it was because it started at 11:00am, before the rest of the games kicked off at noon.

Question:  was it SportsNight or SportsSmash?  I remember some sorta goofy name for their then-flagship show back in the early 90s.

EDIT:  You're right re: SportsNight.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espn2  -  But was there a SportsSmash sometime during its early history?

Sports Smash was the name of the sportscast during Sports Night. It was every half hour. Deb Kauffman and Bill Pidto were two of the first to do it. Kauffman now works on New York Islanders telecasts on FSNY as the pre-game/intermission/post-game host. Pidto is still at ESPN but I don't remember the last time I saw him on camera.

He's now one of the main ESPNews anchors.

I remember the ESN.

ESN carried the Cortaca Game back in 1999 I believe.  Back then, I contacted ESPNZone in NYC to make sure they were carrying it, they were, and I got like 20 Alums to get together to watch the game there.  In a SHOCKING decision, MSG BLACKED OUT THE GAME (or so I was told by the ESPNZone crew).  We got the pregame, but once gametime hit, all we got was a black screen.  I guess MSG bought the rights and decided to block out the game or something, and instead interupted the feed to show Hofstra vs some scrub team.

This was the year that the Cortland fans ran onto Butterfield, and the State Police sent the dogs after them.

John- I may be wrong- It could have been Empire Sports..- but even then - ididnt get ESN back then--late 90's i believe

FA91, I don't think the game itself has ever been on ESPN but the highlights certainly have.  Maybe that is what you were thinking of?

Here's a little scouting report for the AU faithful on Hobart.  Interesting to note btw, this Saterday will be the 77th time since 1899 the Statesmen and Saxons have squared off.

The Statesmen rank 18th in the nation in kickoff returns (24.0 yds/ret). Hobart leads the Liberty League in scoring defense (18.7 ppg), punting (34.7 yds/p), opponent fourth down conversion (40.0%), red zone offense (87.0%), red zone defense (66.7%), and time of possession (34:19/g).

Individually, several Statesmen rank among the top 20 in the nation according to the latest NCAA statistics report:

• Senior linebacker Evan Hoffman (Fairfield Prep/Fairfield, Conn.) leads the nation in forced fumbles (0.67/g, 4).

• Senior running back Doug Blakowski (Iroquois/Elma, N.Y.) is 10th in scoring (11.0 ppg) and all purpose yards (162.0 yds/g) and 15th in rushing (121.7).

• Junior punter Dominick Ancona (Chaminade/Garden City, N.Y.) is 14th in punting (39.6 yds/p).

• Sophomore Ryan LiDrazzah (Kent School/San Diego, Calif.) is 16th in kickoff returns (28.0 yds/ret).

• Senior defensive end Andy Purdie (Victor/Farmington, N.Y.) is 17th in sacks (1.1/g). In Hobart's last two games, he has recorded a total of 5.5 sacks, matching his total for the previous two seasons combined.

Jose- could be...
Must have been a LONG weekend when i caught it.
ESN - ill buy that.
Highlights that followed- that too could have happened...

Sheesh- back when i was under 30 and single -- that would explain the memory loss.

By the way, I didn't have time to do it yesterday, but today I asked around about Frank's posts regarding the playoffs.  I hate to tweak the nose of the king after he deigned to grace us with his presence but, as I suspected (and I figure many of you also suspected), he doesn't know what he is talking about when it comes to what the committee considers for Playoff selection.
