I think if we were to start meeting Fisher in the NCAA's, that might change a little bit because really, the playoffs take it to a whole new level. To me, that's how the Buffalo State game got so big in the 90's. The playoff games of '92 and '94 really brought out the best in that rivalry, in part because there were possible National Championship ramifications.

That would certainly add some pep to the conference rivalry...

What book are you talking about....

Butterfield's widow Lois Butterfield (whose seat at the Stadium is painted with a marker that says "the Big L sits here") wrote a book about Butterfield and his glory days at IC.

I think you can buy it online through the IC Bookstore, or maybe even through Amazon.

It is pretty good and probably recaps some games you played in 89.  The only downside is that The Big L doesn't really use a single name in any of her stories so it can be a little hard to keep up with.

My point being that new recruits WILL know about Cortland... hell i knew about Cortaca before I applied to Ithaca...

True, but what are we telling players about Cortaca? We gotta get them back for beating the 2006 team which finished 7-3? We need to keep the two-year streak of victory alive? This team stands between us and greatness?

The ironic thing about Cortaca to me is that, once it started being a competitive rivalry around 1996, Ithaca stopped being the Ithaca they once were. It also doesn't help that Cortland's never really been a great program. I think the rivalry is a bit manufactured by proximity and the Jug. Too often recently, it's been a game without playoff implications between two teams not really doing much nationally.

That's why last year's Curry game was so disappointing. Here was a chance to really have Cortaca have something extra riding on it. A game played between the two best teams in the East, winner take all.

How's that recruiting tool working for you in the Rochester area  ;D

kidding, well kind of

My only retort is, well, I'm from Rochester....

but if IC wanted me to play for them that would really be a sign of bad things to come...

$30 to buy a damn book which is written so kids with an Ithaca degree can comprehend the contents....this should be interesting.  By the way, the distributor is no longer marketing the book.  The publication can only be purchased through the Ithaca bookstore.

Pep bought a copy and read it on one of his Habitat bus trips to Florida. 'Twas a great read for Pep, who was around for IC's glory years and recalls watching IC in the Stagg Bowl on TV. But more importantly, Alfred was on the IC schedule for many of those years and Lois included references to the oddities of Alfred (i.e., both team benches on the same side at Merrill Field, a boring 3-3 defensive stalemate at South Hill Field in 1976, the Saxons beating IC when Coach was late getting to Merrill Field from his induction into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame.).

What was most timely, however, was Lois' writing about his last days and his battle with Alzheimer's, as Pep's mom, a secretary at AU for 30 years, at that time was suffering from Alzheimer's.

Pep still has yet to meet The Big L...does she still go to games?

On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

I think I heard someone say that she moved south to be near family Pep, but I am not sure.

Her "seat" was right next to the door to the press box but, in recent years, the view was obstructed by the FDC.  She moved her seat to accomodate the FDC's shenanigans without complaint if I remember correctly.

To me Cortaca is like Fisher-Naz... As  a Fisher Student, even before I was on campus it was put in my mind that Naz is evil... So that Fisher-Naz game is always a heated game... not to mention, the fist fight was my freshman year

Yes with the acceptance package the SJF students receive a flier from the athletics department with the Naz logo with a target on it...

Yeah that is what I was going to say on the matter.  Fisher's one true rival is Naz, and since they don't have a football team we don't really have a true football rival.  People can talk about the Courage Bowl all they want but it doesn't feel like a rivalry.  Ithaca is a fun game that seems like it will carry importance each year but I have no animosity towards them and have no gripes cheering for them if they make it into the playoffs and Fisher doesn't.  Same would go for Alfred or any other E8 team for that matter.  Besides Ithaca can have their precious Cortaca, and we'll keep on beating them year after year after year, I have no problems with that at all  ;D

As far as a rivalry, Fisher football players would agree that it is Alfred

Q,

Just curious on how you, and the other IC faithful, see the SJF game compared to the Cortaca game?

Is it just a conference rivalry?

Does it have the chance to equal it if SJF keeps up their success as a program and vs IC?

Good question upstate but in dlip's mind he can only relate IC/CS to Union/RPI. Each year when we play Bart it is a huge game, always very important. Yet nothing, ****ing no competition on this earth compares to the Union/RPI rivalry in dlip's mind no matter how many times we play Bart, U of R, and even IC. dlip is a hardcore Yanks fan but always says he would dress like ****ing Yaz and go to Yankee stadium before he ever, ever, put on anything that said RPI on it. Maybe IC and CS fans may feel the same about their rivalry and how nothing can ever touch it. dlip thinks SJF/IC may be similar to Union/Bart in that the games are always important, serious, and have history but just isn't the same as playing that main rival.

Their have been some intense games with Alfred the past few years....Both times we've missed the playoffs since 2004 was directly due to the fact that we had to beat Alfred the final week of the season and with everything on the line those guys managed to beat us by a single score....Brenton Brady still haunts me to this day.

When I was there (not too long ago) there was bigger disdain for UR than AU or any other team...

dlip, curious about how you see Yanks-Sox.... I've always thrown out there the working belief that it wasn't really a rivalry until '04; for a rivalry, you need one team to not win all the time. Plus, even though Sox fans have always hated Yankees fans, in the past five years the animosity the other way has quadrupled. Is Yanks-Sox pre-2004, the first time the Sox EVER beat the Yankees in postseason play....

On the other hand, there had to have been SOMETHING there.... otherwise '04 just would have been a big feat and not the hate-fest that it was....
