i tend to agree with cards---
I played soccer at Fisher too and what that taught me was more time management skills-
Actually did better in my fall semesters than the spring.
20 games per season- and still made time to get work done and socialize.
Biggest difference was the weight room-Obviously a lot less time there and in the vid room too

I know I am a little late on the reasons for the 9 percentage points in GPA difference explanation, but I wanted to chime in. I think there is no one reason why athletes GPA's are lower than the general student body, but more likely a combination of several factors.

Time spent on a sport (practice, games, travel, etc.) is obviously going to take away from study time. But, by itself it does not seem to be enough to explain the gap. I was a soccer player at Fisher, and despite 15-20 games a season, there was plenty of time to finish my school work.

one reason may start before the athlete ever shows up to school. A non athlete chooses his/her school based on several factors, but one big one is probably area of study, quality of the faculty, student to professor ratio, etc. An athlete probably looks at all of those as well, but also has to factor into their decision the coach they will play for, facilities, GPA requirements when choosing a school. I am not saying DIII athletes are not doing well because they are not in the best area of study for themselves, but more that the area of focus may be wider for an athlete. Watering down their willingness or ability to focus on academics.
Other social factors influence students time as well.

My point exactly..  If you are going to throw numbers out there why not compare them to what those students grade point differences were in high school. And does a students/ athletes grades change in their off season?
Football !!! The ultimate team sport. Anyone who plays DIII football is a winner...

Happy New Year!

Drink lots of water before going to bed and if needed, a hot cup of chamomille tea first thing in the am will CURE your Level 1-8.5 hangover.  Over 8.5 and I suggest an inpatient bed for some detox.

Merry New Year to our E8 brethren.

I am hearing Buff State to be in the E8 in 2011 with Frostburg and Salisbury.

Could be a nice fit especially if they can return to their previous form years ago. The the E8 will be ****ing hardcore :)

Salisbury

Buff State

Not bad if you ask dlip.

That would still give the E8 the 7 teams if/when SU and Frostburg leave...

Interesting...

Yeah, although it'd be nice if Buff State were as good as they used to be. I'm glad the E8 would keep the AQ, but it's too bad they've struggled to really upgrade. At least right now, trading Norwich for Frostburg and then Buff State seems like a lateral move, at least from a talent perspective. I know there are other considerations. But it's a shame they couldn't get a Cortland to join

I can see why Cortland wouldn't want to join the E8 though, they are 0-5 with their last 5 combined meetings between SJF and IC....

What fun would it be for them to know they probably can't finish any higher than 2nd?

Add Brockport, Cortland and Morrisville to the E8 when they leave. Then move Salisbury, Frostburg and Wesley to the NJAC. Two excellent conferences.

From IC's website: Buffalo State will be joining the E8 in 2012.

Hopefully Boyes can get the program turned around by then. They were fun to play against and a tough out till 2001 rolled around.

I would almost prefer not having a big conference though. I kind of like seeing new teams every so often. If the conference has nine members in 2012 that'd only leave one game where IC might get some variation.

Almost makes me miss the days of them being an independent...almost

That would be great for everyone but it will never happen because of the 100 man roster limit set by the NJAC. Wesley would not come for that reason, or maybe the NJAC can change the 100 man roster limit. I guess fairy tales may come true. ::)
It ain't over till it's over, and when you get to the fork in the road, take it.

sjfcards

I think the addition of Buff State is a logical decision for the E8. They are a somewhat new member of the NJAC, so they do not have the ties to the league that Cortland may have. Also, Buffalo makes sense geograpically. Sure they are not as conveniently located as C-State, but they are much closer to most schools than Norwich was. I like the decision.
GO FISHER!!!
